If Gemini in Chrome is missing on your Chromebook, check that the device is a Chromebook Plus, then verify rollout eligibility, Chrome setup, language and any work or school restrictions. Google says the feature is still rolling out gradually, so passing every check does not guarantee immediate access.
First, identify which Gemini feature is missing
These steps address Gemini in Chrome—Google’s Chrome side-panel or floating-chat experience for asking questions about browser content. They do not establish that the standalone Gemini web app or every Gemini feature on ChromeOS has the same Chromebook Plus requirement.

Gemini in Chrome can use the current tab by default. On a computer, Google says you can share up to 10 open tabs, for tasks such as summarizing an article, explaining a topic or comparing information across pages. If the missing feature is a different Gemini service, check its own availability and requirements rather than assuming these Chrome-specific rules apply.

Google lists a Chromebook Plus device as necessary to use Gemini in Chrome on a Chromebook. Confirm your model’s classification in its specifications or device documentation. If it is not a Chromebook Plus, browser updates or account changes will not remove this hardware requirement.

Replacing a working Chromebook is an optional, costly path—not the first troubleshooting step. Consider Chromebook Plus hardware only if you have confirmed that Gemini in Chrome is the feature you want and your current device is not Plus. Even then, a new device does not guarantee immediate access: rollout, account, region, language and administrator conditions still apply.
Verify eligibility and availability
- Rollout: Google says Gemini in Chrome is not available to all users yet and is rolling out gradually. An eligible device may not have received access.
- Age: The user must meet the eligible age—13 or the applicable age in their country—subject to Google’s account and regional guidance.
- Country and language: The feature requires a supported region and supported language. If you recently traveled, Google notes that your location may not have updated; a VPN can also affect availability.
Google’s Chromebook Help guide to Gemini in Chrome describes the requirements and gradual rollout.

Check Chrome and your sign-in
- Update Chrome: Open Chrome and go to More (the three-dot menu) > Help > About Google Chrome. Install an available update and relaunch the browser.
- Use a signed-in regular profile: Sign in to Chrome and try again outside Incognito mode; Gemini in Chrome is unavailable in Incognito.
- Check the language: Confirm Chrome is set to a supported language.
- Complete first-use setup: If Chrome prompts you to opt in the first time, follow the prompt to enable the feature.
Try Google’s troubleshooting steps
- Restart Chrome, then reload the Gemini side panel or floating chat.
- Check that you are in a supported country. If you recently traveled, allow for the location to update; if you use a VPN, turn it off temporarily and try again.
- Update Chrome if you have not already, and confirm the browser language is supported.
- If the problem persists, reset Chrome flags to their defaults and restart Chrome. This is an advanced step; flags are experimental browser settings.
- If Chrome is running inside a virtual machine, shut down the virtualized environment and retry on the Chromebook itself.
Google’s Gemini in Chrome troubleshooting guide covers these access checks.
Ask an administrator about managed accounts
On a work- or school-managed Chromebook, the organization may control whether Gemini in Chrome is available to your account or organizational unit. Ask your administrator to confirm whether the feature is enabled; local browser troubleshooting cannot override an organization’s policy. Google documents these controls in its administrator guidance for Gemini in Chrome.

If Gemini in Chrome is still missing
If your device, account, region, language and browser setup appear eligible, the gradual rollout may not have reached you yet. Google’s guidance is to send feedback from Gemini in Chrome if you can access it; if you cannot open the feature, continue to check the official availability guidance rather than assuming a device fault.
