Stop fertilizing, remove any granules from leaves or the soil surface, and identify how the exposure happened before adding water or other products. Fertilizer burn is usually a salt or concentration injury, but drought, heat, disease and irrigation problems can look similar. The right response depends on whether the damage is on foliage, roots, seed, a container, or a concentrated spill, and on how well the site drains.
Take these steps immediately
Act promptly, but do not try several remedies at once. Record the product and conditions while they are still easy to verify.

- Stop all fertilizer applications. Do not apply a “balancing” nutrient, compost, manure, lime or other amendment until the cause and soil status are known. Extra salts can increase the injury.
- Identify the exposure. Note the fertilizer name and formulation, amount or application rate, date and time, whether it was granular or dissolved, where it was placed, crop growth stage, recent irrigation, rainfall, heat and drought. Mark the edge of the damaged area.
- Remove dry material where practical. Brush granules from leaves without rubbing them into the tissue. Collect visible granules from a concentrated spill, especially on turf, patios, container surfaces or bare soil. Wear the protective equipment and follow the product label.
- Do not immediately flood the site. First check drainage, slope and nearby drains or waterways. Water can move dissolved fertilizer into roots, groundwater or surface water, and a saturated root zone can cause additional oxygen stress.
- Separate damaged from undamaged plants. In containers, move affected pots away from other plants so drainage water does not contaminate them. In a field or bed, photograph and map the pattern before irrigation changes it.
- Check the label for foliar products. If a spray was applied to leaves, use only the rinsing or re-entry directions on that label. Do not assume that washing every crop with a hose is safe.
- Arrange testing when the pattern is persistent, severe or uncertain. Soil and, when relevant, irrigation-water analysis can distinguish soluble salts from a nutrient imbalance or another problem.
How fertilizer injury appears—and why diagnosis is difficult
Typical salt-injury signs
Soluble fertilizer salts can make the soil solution more concentrated than the fluid inside root cells. Water then becomes harder for roots to absorb, so a plant may look drought-stressed even when the soil is moist. Common signs include brown leaf tips or margins, sudden wilting, stunting, poor emergence and damaged or discolored roots. A concentrated pile or band can kill plants in a sharply defined strip.

Heat, dry soil, compacted roots, poor irrigation uniformity, herbicide drift, disease and naturally saline water can produce similar symptoms. Compare the symptom map with the application pattern: a strip that follows a spreader pass, a ring beneath a pot, or plants nearest a spill raises suspicion of fertilizer injury. Symptoms that appear uniformly across a bed after hot weather may have a different cause.

Questions that narrow the cause
- Where is the tissue affected? Leaf-only injury points toward a foliar spray or granules caught in foliage; root and whole-plant injury suggests salts in the growing medium; a missing row or poor emergence suggests seed or in-furrow placement.
- When did symptoms begin? Rapid scorch soon after application is more consistent with concentration injury than a slow nutrient deficiency, although timing alone cannot diagnose it.
- What were the weather and moisture conditions? Hot, dry weather increases stress and can intensify fertilizer injury. Dry soil also raises the risk from fertilizer placed near seed.
- Is the soil or container draining? Leaching can reduce salts only when water can move through the root zone. Heavy clay, a compacted layer or a blocked container drain changes the response.
- Could the irrigation water be contributing salts? Repeated use of saline water can create injury even when the fertilizer rate was correct.
Match the response to the exposure
| Exposure or pattern | First response | What to avoid | What to monitor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Granules resting on leaves | Gently remove or collect dry granules; follow the label for any foliar product. | Rubbing leaves, adding another spray, or assuming rain will remove all residue. | New scorch on the contacted tissue and growth from unaffected buds. |
| Localized spill on turf or bare soil | Collect as much solid material as possible. If the site drains safely, flush the remaining residue according to site-appropriate guidance. | Letting concentrated material remain, or washing it into a drain or stream. | The spill outline, turf crown survival and runoff. |
| Over-application across a field or bed | Stop fertilizer, confirm drainage and obtain soil guidance before leaching. | Applying more fertilizer or amendments to “correct” the problem. | Soil moisture, new leaf growth and test results. |
| Foliar fertilizer spray | Check the product label and record concentration, nozzle, weather and drying time. | Using a stronger rinse or repeating the spray. | Whether injury is limited to sprayed surfaces and whether new leaves emerge normally. |
| Fertilizer placed close to seed | Assess stand loss and soil moisture; avoid repeating in-furrow placement until crop-specific guidance is reviewed. | Adding a second application beside stressed seed. | Emergence gaps, root condition and surviving seedlings. |
| Container plant with salty media | Use clear-water flushing only when the pot is large enough to drain freely; replace media in a small pot with high-salt media. | Leaving the pot standing in drainage water or flushing a blocked container. | Drainage, root odor or discoloration, and new growth. |
When and how to leach excess fertilizer salts
Leaching is a site-management decision, not a universal cure. It can lower soluble salts when the fertilizer is in the soil solution, the root zone has adequate drainage and water can be applied without causing erosion or runoff. Do not waterlog the crop. If water ponds, exits the site, or carries fertilizer toward a drain, stop and obtain local advice.
Flower beds and field soil
Maryland Extension recommends first having the soil analyzed. If high salt levels are confirmed in a flower bed, its guidance is to soak the affected area with one-inch applications of water three to four times to help leach salts. This instruction is specific to that situation; it is not a prescription for every crop, soil or fertilizer.
UMass Extension gives broad estimates for the top foot of soil: six inches of water may leach about 50% of soluble salts, while 12 inches may leach about 80%. The figures are guidance rather than guarantees, and the source emphasizes drainage and testing. Sandy, well-drained soil may respond differently from clay or a compacted profile, and salts below the root zone can still affect groundwater or neighboring areas.

Apply water in controlled amounts that the soil can absorb. Check the lower part of the root zone between applications instead of relying on a fixed schedule. A crop with shallow roots, a recently transplanted plant and a mature tree do not have the same tolerance for repeated saturation.
Turf and concentrated spills
For a fertilizer spill on turf, collect as much solid product as possible before adding water. Purdue Extension advises flushing what remains with water after collection, provided the site can drain without creating runoff. Severe injury may kill the turf crown; after the cause is corrected, the practical repair can be reseeding or replacing sod rather than repeated fertilization.
Containers and indoor plants
Container media hold salts differently from open field soil. Maryland Extension says a large pot with excessive salts can be flushed with clear water and allowed to drain fully. A small pot with high-salt media should have the growing medium replaced instead. Never leave a flushed pot sitting in its own drainage water, and make sure the drainage holes are open before attempting to leach.

Test soil and irrigation water when the answer is not obvious
Testing is especially useful when symptoms persist, the damage is patchy, the application record is incomplete, or the same area has been injured more than once. Take separate samples from a damaged zone and a healthy comparison zone rather than mixing them. Follow the laboratory’s sampling depth and handling instructions.

That value comes from its laboratory guidance; it is not a universal crop-specific diagnosis. The result depends on the extraction method, sample depth, crop sensitivity and the rest of the soil report.
Colorado State Extension identifies laboratory analysis as the best way to diagnose saline and sodic soil problems. If irrigation water may be a salt source, have it analyzed as well. A soil report can show whether salts or nutrients are actually elevated and helps prevent an unnecessary amendment that would worsen the imbalance.

How to use the results
- High salts with adequate drainage: ask for a crop- and soil-specific leaching plan, then recheck plant response.
- Normal salts: investigate drought, root disease, compaction, spray drift, uneven spreading or another stress instead of continuing to flush.
- High sodium or poor infiltration: treat it as a soil-structure problem requiring professional guidance; simply adding more water may not solve it.
- High nutrient concentration without salt data: do not infer the salt hazard from a single nutrient number. Request the laboratory’s soluble-salt measurement and interpretation.
Crop and growth-stage considerations
Soybeans and other field crops
NC State describes two distinct soybean risks. Fertilizer placed in-furrow too close to seed can injure seed and seedlings, especially when soil is dry. For future planting, avoid direct seed contact and avoid in-furrow applications under extremely dry conditions. Foliar products, including some urea-ammonium-nitrate formulations, can burn leaves. NC State reports that soybean foliage can typically recover when most leaf area remains unaffected; that conditional observation should not be generalized to every crop.
During a current injury, estimate surviving stand and unaffected leaf area before deciding to replant. A short-term cosmetic scorch is different from a lost stand or damaged growing point.
Vegetables, flowers and seedlings
Young plants and newly transplanted roots have little reserve and a small root zone, so concentration injury can be rapid. Remove visible granules, verify drainage and avoid repeated saturation. If a container or plug tray has concentrated media contamination, replacing the medium may be more reliable than trying to dilute it.
Best Value
Turf
Turf damage often follows the shape of a spreader pass or spill. Preserve any surviving crowns, collect residue and flush only where runoff can be controlled. Wait for recovery signs before reseeding; otherwise, remove dead material and repair the area after correcting the application error.
Monitor recovery and decide whether to replace plants
Do not judge recovery from the first brown leaf. Mark several representative plants and record new leaves, shoot growth, wilting between irrigations and the condition of the growing point. Existing scorched tissue will not turn green again; recovery means that new tissue develops normally and the plant maintains turgor.
Replacement becomes more likely when the crown or growing point is dead, roots are extensively damaged, a stand is too thin for the crop’s yield goal, or turf has lost its crowns. Remove dead plants only after correcting the salt source, or replacements may suffer the same injury. Keep the product container, application notes and photographs in case an extension specialist or laboratory needs them.

Prevent another fertilizer-burn episode
- Calibrate spreaders and sprayers, and record the actual rate rather than relying on a dial setting.
- Keep granular fertilizer off foliage and avoid piles at row ends, around tree trunks and beside container stems.
- Use crop-specific guidance for starter and in-furrow fertilizer; maintain the recommended separation from seed.
- Do not apply during extreme heat or drought unless the label and local crop guidance specifically support it.
- Check soil and irrigation-water tests before increasing rates or adding amendments.
- Inspect container drainage and never allow pots to stand in fertilizer solution.
- Store and clean up spills according to the product label, keeping fertilizer away from drains and surface water.
- When using a foliar product, follow the labeled concentration, nozzle and weather restrictions, and test an appropriate small area when the label permits.
