If you may miss a minimum payment, this is no longer only a spending-habit problem: contact the card issuer immediately and explain what you can afford.
First decide which problem you are facing
“Hard to control” can describe two different situations. You may still be paying every bill but spending more than you intended. Or you may not be able to make the next minimum payment. The right first move depends on which one applies.

When the bills are still affordable
Focus on making spending visible and adding a deliberate pause. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has used reader statements such as, “When I overspend I often think I can spend less later to make up for it, but I find it’s hard to do.” That pattern calls for a practical rule and a review of actual purchases, not a judgment about your character.

When a payment may be missed
If you cannot pay the minimum or expect to miss it, treat the situation as a bill emergency. The CFPB’s consumer guidance says, “Contact your credit card company immediately.” Do that before the due date if possible. Add up income and essential expenses so you can tell the issuer what amount is affordable and when regular payments might resume.

Put one obstacle between you and the next purchase
Choose one rule you can follow today. The goal is to interrupt an automatic swipe, not to design a perfect financial system.
Examples of a personal rule
- Review the current card balance before a discretionary purchase.
- Remove a saved card from one shopping account so checkout requires a decision.
- Use cash for a category of small purchases if that method suits your circumstances.
- Wait until the next day before buying a nonessential item above an amount you choose.
Write the rule down where you will see it. CFPB worksheets use an “under $20” cash example to illustrate how a rule might work; that threshold is an example, not a universal limit. Pick a number and category that fit your income, obligations and normal spending.
Review the last month without building a burdensome spreadsheet
Tracking can feel complicated. You do not need a perfect daily log to find a useful pattern. Open the most recent statement and card-activity screen, then sort purchases into a few understandable groups such as groceries, transportation, bills, eating out, online shopping and other discretionary spending.

Look for patterns, not blame
- Which category is larger than you expected?
- Do purchases cluster at a particular time, such as late at night or after payday?
- Are several small transactions adding up to a meaningful amount?
- Are you using the card for necessities because cash is short, or mainly for optional purchases?
One CFPB worksheet captures another common experience: “I don’t think about the money I spend when using my debit or credit card to make purchases.” If that feels familiar, putting the transaction total in front of you at the moment of purchase may be more useful than trying to remember everything at month-end.
Turn the review into a workable spending plan
List expected take-home income for the month and fixed obligations first. Add variable necessities, minimum debt payments and a modest amount for irregular costs. Then compare the plan with the previous month’s actual card activity.
Keep the plan operational
- Use a small number of categories you can recognize quickly.
- Set a limit for one problem category rather than attempting to change every category at once.
- Leave room for predictable annual or irregular expenses; otherwise the card may become the emergency fund.
- Choose how you will check progress: a weekly statement review, a balance check before purchases or a paper spending log.
A free worksheet or ordinary paper is sufficient. A notebook can be an optional convenience, but no particular product is necessary or established as more effective.

Use feedback and rules carefully
A 2017 consumer-insights report found that more than 90 percent of consumers interviewed said they were interested in tools or applications offering real-time spending feedback. That is stated interest among the people interviewed, not a national prevalence estimate and not proof that an app will reduce spending. Those 2017 findings do not establish the current features or effectiveness of any commercial tool.
The CFPB also reported that, among consumers who carried card balances from month to month, exposure to a simple guideline, “Don’t swipe the small stuff,” led to lower card balances in that group. The report does not provide an effect size in the available material, so the finding should not be treated as a guarantee or generalized to every cardholder. Its conclusion was that rules-based messages show promise as a low-cost, scalable form of financial education.
If you may miss a payment, contact the issuer promptly
Use the phone number on the back of the card or the issuer’s secure account-messaging channel. Be direct and specific.

- Explain that a financial difficulty may prevent the next payment.
- State your income, essential expenses and the amount you can pay now.
- Say when you expect regular payments to resume, if you can estimate that.
- Ask what payment arrangement, hardship option or due-date adjustment may be available.
- Request the terms in writing and record the representative’s name, date and reference number.
Many issuers may work with customers facing a financial emergency, but no issuer is required to offer a particular arrangement. Continue watching statements and messages for the actual terms. Do not assume that a verbal possibility has changed your due date or minimum payment until the issuer confirms it.
Compare the main ways to get help
| Option | Problem it addresses | Cost and time | Does it add borrowing? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal rule or spending log | Shows purchase patterns and creates a pause before spending. | Usually can be done with paper or a free worksheet; requires a short, repeatable review. | No. |
| Real-time spending feedback tool | Makes budget information more visible near the purchase decision. | Effectiveness and current commercial features are not established here; check any fees and data practices yourself. | No, unless the tool is paired with new credit. |
| Nonprofit credit counseling | Provides tailored budgeting and debt guidance and may arrange a debt-management plan. | Ask the organization what services cost, what is included and how long the process takes. | Not necessarily; a debt-management plan is different from taking a new loan. |
| Debt consolidation | Combines several debts into one payment. | A lower payment can extend repayment; total cost and terms depend on the offer. | Often yes, because consolidation commonly uses a new loan or credit account. |
Consider nonprofit credit counseling when self-management is not enough
Nonprofit counselors can help organize income and expenses, prepare a budget and discuss debt-management plans. This may be appropriate when you have tried a spending rule but cannot keep up with several accounts or cannot create a workable payment plan alone.

Be skeptical of debt-relief promises
The CFPB warns about companies that guarantee they can eliminate debt, demand upfront fees tied to a promised settlement or tell you to stop communicating with your card issuer. Advice to stop making minimum payments can lead to late fees, collection activity and additional damage while the debt remains unresolved.
Why consolidation is not a spending fix by itself
Consolidation can simplify several bills, but it does not correct a gap between spending and income. Unless spending falls or income rises, new charges can accumulate alongside the consolidated balance. A lower monthly payment may also mean a longer repayment period and a higher total cost. Compare the interest, fees, term, total amount repaid and consequences of missed payments before accepting an offer.
Build a routine you can maintain
After the first review, select one recurring check rather than tracking every transaction forever. For example, review the card balance every Sunday, reconcile the statement when it closes or check the planned category before making a discretionary purchase. Keep the rule visible and change it only after you have enough experience to see whether it fits your actual cash flow.
If the card is used for necessities because income does not cover essential expenses, a stricter purchase rule cannot solve the underlying shortfall. Prioritize the payment-emergency steps, contact the issuer and seek qualified counseling or other local assistance as needed.
A simple seven-day reset
- Day 1: Write one pause rule and remove one stored-card shortcut.
- Day 2: Review the last month’s transactions and mark the categories that exceeded your expectations.
- Day 3: List income, essential expenses and all minimum payments.
- Day 4: Choose one category limit and decide how you will check it.
- Day 5: If a payment may be missed, call the issuer and describe what you can afford.
- Day 6: If you still cannot make a workable plan, interview a nonprofit counselor using the questions above.
- Day 7: Review what happened during the week and keep only the routines you can repeat.
