Repeated conflict at home can leave you exhausted, anxious, unable to concentrate or afraid of what will happen next. First ask one question: is anyone in immediate danger? If you are in the UK and danger is immediate, call 999. If you cannot safely speak on a UK mobile emergency call, listen to the operator and press 55 when prompted; the Home Office says this transfers the call to police, but it does not let police track your location. Emergency procedures differ outside the UK.
You do not have to decide whether the situation is “bad enough,” prove that it is abuse, or confront the other person before seeking help. The safest next step depends on urgency, what is happening and whether your phone or internet use is private.

Start with an immediate safety check
If someone is in danger now
Move toward safety if you can do so without increasing the risk. In the UK, call 999 for immediate danger, serious injury or a life-threatening mental-health crisis. You can also go to an emergency department (A&E). If you are elsewhere, use your country’s emergency number rather than assuming the UK procedure applies.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not delay an emergency call while trying to explain the whole history. State where you are, what is happening and whether anyone is injured or has access to a weapon. If leaving the room or home would make things more dangerous, stay as safe as possible and follow the emergency operator’s instructions.

If you cannot speak on a UK mobile call
The Home Office says that, during a mobile 999 call, you should listen to the operator and press 55 if prompted. This silent-call process transfers the call to the police. It is not a location-tracking service, and it is specific to the UK system described by the Home Office. Read the current guidance at GOV.UK’s domestic-abuse help page before relying on any non-emergency contact details.
Check whether your device is private
Monitoring a phone, messages, accounts or internet use can itself be part of controlling behaviour. If another person may be watching your device, do not assume that a call, chat or browsing history is private. Use a safer phone or trusted person only when doing so will not expose you to more danger. A specialist adviser can help you think through a safer way to make contact.
Conflict is not automatically abuse—but fear and control matter
Families and partners can have painful arguments without every disagreement being domestic abuse. The important question is the pattern and its effect on your freedom and safety, not whether there was one bad argument. The Home Office describes domestic abuse as including coercive control, economic and online abuse, threats, intimidation, emotional abuse and sexual abuse, as well as physical violence. You might seek advice if you are frightened, isolated, repeatedly belittled, prevented from accessing money, monitored, threatened or pressured into sexual activity.

- You change what you say or do because you fear the other person’s reaction.
- Your access to money, work, transport, medication, identification or contact with friends and family is restricted.
- Your phone, accounts or whereabouts are monitored, or technology is used to intimidate you.
- Threats, insults, humiliation or sexual pressure are repeated, even when there are no visible injuries.
- The other person denies or minimizes what happened and you feel responsible for keeping the peace.
This list is not a diagnostic test or a legal determination. It is a way to notice when specialist support could be useful. The Home Office says that people who feel frightened of or controlled by a partner, ex-partner or family member should remember that it is not their fault and there is no shame in seeking help.

You can ask for help without choosing a label
You can tell an adviser exactly what happens and how it affects you without calling it abuse. A confidential service can explain options, safety considerations and local resources; you remain in control of which, if any, step to take. You can also contact support if you are worried about a friend or relative rather than experiencing the behaviour yourself.
Where to get specialist domestic-abuse support
Use the current UK government directory
The Home Office’s Domestic abuse: how to get help page lists free, confidential routes for England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, along with other organisations such as Victim Support and Women’s Aid live chat. Phone numbers, opening hours and eligibility can change, so check the live page when you are ready to contact a service rather than relying on an old screenshot or printed number.
Choose the safest way to make contact
Some services offer telephone, text, webchat or other contact methods. Select the option that is safest in your circumstances. If speaking aloud could be overheard, ask whether text or chat is available; if online activity may be monitored, ask a trusted person or adviser about a safer route. Do not clear or alter records if doing so could alert the person controlling the device. A specialist service can discuss that risk with you.
What to say when you contact a service
You do not need a prepared statement. Explain who is involved, what behaviour is occurring, whether there have been threats or violence, whether children or other dependants are affected, and what you need today. You can ask what information is confidential, what records are kept and whether the service can contact you in a particular way.

Urgent mental-health help in England
Conflict can affect sleep, mood, concentration and your ability to function. The route for mental-health help depends on urgency and immediate safety.
| Situation | Route | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate danger or risk to life | 999 or A&E in the UK | Call emergency services. Do not wait for a routine appointment. |
| Urgent mental-health help that is not an emergency | NHS 111 mental-health option in England | Use NHS 111 online or call 111 and select the mental-health option. NHS 111 routing is an England service. |
| Continuing distress without immediate danger | GP, local mental-health services or counselling | Ask for an assessment and suitable local support; availability and eligibility vary. |
NHS England announced the 111 mental-health option on 27 August 2024. If you are in England and need urgent help but are not in immediate danger, use the NHS England guidance or the NHS 111 service. If danger or serious risk to life develops, switch to 999 or A&E.
Support for ongoing stress, anxiety or low mood
Start with a GP or local NHS service
A GP can listen to what is happening, assess your mental and physical health and help identify appropriate services. You do not need to present a diagnosis. Ask for an appointment in a way that is safe for you, and tell the practice if contacting you by phone, text or post could create risk.
The NHS page How to find local mental health services explains how to locate services and when to seek urgent help. Local arrangements differ, so a service available in one area may not be available or eligible in another.

NHS Talking Therapies in England
Adults in England can self-refer to NHS Talking Therapies for common conditions such as anxiety or depression. Eligibility, referral routes and local availability vary. Self-referral is an option, not an obligation; a GP or specialist domestic-abuse adviser can help you decide whether it is appropriate and safe.
What counselling can and cannot promise
The NHS describes counselling this way: “Counselling is a type of talking therapy (psychological therapy) where a counsellor listens to you and helps you find your own solutions to problems.” Read the NHS counselling guidance for the scope of the service. Counselling may help you work through difficult feelings or relationship problems, but it cannot make an unsafe person stop controlling or harming you, and the NHS offer depends on your condition and local service.

Tell one trustworthy person
Choose someone who is unlikely to pass information to the person causing concern. You can say, “Things at home are affecting my mental health, and I need someone to know.” Ask whether they can check in, provide a safe place to talk or help you contact a service. You are not asking them to confront anyone.

Describe the impact on your daily life
For your own conversation with a clinician or adviser, note changes in sleep, appetite, concentration, mood, work or study, and any physical symptoms. Record only in a place that is safe and private. You do not need a perfect timeline or evidence file to receive support.
Best Value
Keep essential contacts accessible when safe
Know which trusted person, GP, specialist service or emergency route you would use if the situation escalates. If keeping written information or call history could increase risk, ask an adviser for a safer plan instead. Do not treat a self-care routine, breathing exercise or temporary distraction as a solution to an unsafe environment; these may ease a moment of distress but do not remove the source of danger.
Do not take responsibility for ending the conflict
You can set boundaries only when doing so is safe. You are not responsible for another person’s threats, intimidation, substance use, anger or violence. Leaving, confronting, mediating or trying couples counselling can carry risks where coercion or abuse is present. Discuss those risks with a specialist before inviting the other person into a joint process.
If you are supporting a friend or family member
Listen without demanding proof or a decision. Say that you believe them, that the behaviour is not their fault and that help is available. Ask what contact is safe and whether they want information, practical help or simply company. Do not confront the alleged abuser, share their location or pressure them to leave; those actions can increase danger. The Home Office includes confidential support for concerned friends and family on its help page.
