What to Do if Chromecast with Google TV Is Slow or Keeps Restarting After an Update

If your Chromecast with Google TV became sluggish or repeatedly reboots after an update, start with an on-device restart, then finish app and system updates. A reported slowdown-and-restart combination is not proof that the update caused the problem: Google’s current release notes do not identify a specific firmware release as causing it. Work through the steps below in order, and factory-reset only when recovery or simpler troubleshooting fails.

First, identify which problem you actually have

Different symptoms point to different fixes. A slow home screen is usually an app, storage, or system-process issue; video buffering with responsive menus is usually a network issue; a frozen progress screen is an update problem; and repeated returns to a startup or Android recovery screen require recovery steps.

Menus, app launches, or remote input are delayed Restart from Settings, force-stop recently opened apps, and complete app and system updates.
Menus are normal but video buffers, drops quality, or disconnects Restart the router and check Wi-Fi. Consider Ethernet only if the problem is clearly network-related.
An update screen is progressing slowly or appears frozen Check the progress state, power, and connectivity before interrupting it. Allow the normal update window to pass.
The device repeatedly reboots or returns to Android recovery Choose “Try again” first; if recovery returns, factory data reset is the documented escalation.

Note whether your unit is the HD or 4K model. Record that model, the exact screen or error message, and the system build before resetting; those details are useful if you need support.

1. Restart Chromecast from Google TV

Google’s direct first step for a slow or laggy Google TV device is a software restart:

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. From the Google TV home screen, open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Choose Restart and confirm.

This closes background processes without deleting apps or personal settings. Give the home screen a minute after it returns, then test navigation and one app before changing anything else.

If the interface will not respond

Disconnect the Chromecast’s power cable for one full minute, then reconnect it. The power source must be removed: pulling the Chromecast out of the television’s HDMI socket alone does not reboot the device. If you use a television USB port for power, test with the supplied power adapter and a wall outlet when possible, because an underpowered port can make boot and update behavior unreliable.

2. Reduce the app workload and finish app updates

A device can feel unusually slow while applications are updating or while several recently used apps remain active. Google’s slow-device guidance recommends force-stopping recently opened apps and checking the Play Store for pending updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Force-stop recently opened apps

  1. Open Settings > Apps.
  2. Select an app you opened recently.
  3. Choose Force stop, then confirm if prompted.
  4. Repeat for other recently used apps, especially one that became slow or crashes.

Force stop does not remove the app or its account. Reopen one app at a time so you can see whether a particular app brings the slowdown back.

Update every installed app

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Select your profile icon.
  3. Choose Manage apps & games.
  4. Open Updates and select Update all.

Google warns that Google TV may be slower while app updates are in progress. Keep the device powered and connected until the queue finishes, then restart once more and test the menus.

3. Check the system update on the Chromecast itself

Chromecast with Google TV checks its firmware from the television interface. Google specifically says this update does not appear in the Google Home app, so use the on-device path:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Open About.
  4. Choose System update.

Allow any offered update to download and install before judging performance or trying to cast. Interrupting an installation can leave the device in recovery, whereas a normal menu delay may simply be the television finishing background work.

What the current firmware information means

Google’s firmware notes page, last updated 23 June 2026, lists production build UTTC.250917.004 for both Chromecast with Google TV (4K) and Chromecast with Google TV (HD). The notes list an Android security patch level updated to October 2025, along with other bug fixes and performance improvements. Releases are staged, so your device may not receive that build at the same time as another unit. Compare the build shown under the on-device system information with Google’s current release notes; a missing build is not, by itself, evidence of a failed update.

The notes do not establish that this build, or a particular earlier update, causes the exact combination of sluggish menus and repeated restarts. Treat the timing as a troubleshooting clue, not a confirmed software-bug diagnosis.

4. If the update looks stuck, check its state before unplugging

Google says a Chromecast update typically takes 10–12 minutes. That is a typical duration, not a guarantee for every connection or installation. A download that is still progressing slowly may take 20–30 minutes, according to Google’s update guidance.

When waiting is the safer choice

  • The percentage or progress indicator is changing, even slowly.
  • The device remains powered and the television still shows the update screen.
  • Your network is busy but otherwise working.

Do not repeatedly pull the plug during installation. If the download remains at one percentage for an unusually long time, router settings or connectivity may be involved rather than the firmware file itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to restart the update

If it has clearly exceeded the expected window and shows no progress, verify that the power adapter is firmly connected and that the network is available. Google’s recovery guidance is to disconnect power for one minute and reconnect it; the update should automatically resume or restart. After reconnecting, leave the device alone long enough to complete the process before attempting another intervention.

5. Handle a boot loop or Android recovery screen

A device that never reaches the home screen is different from one with slow menus. If Chromecast with Google TV opens Android recovery, use the choices on that screen:

  1. Select Try again first.
  2. Allow the device to reboot and check whether it reaches Google TV.
  3. If it returns to recovery, choose Factory data reset.

The recovery reset erases user data and requires setup again. It is not the same as a harmless restart, so use it only after the retry path fails or when recovery gives you no other way to boot.

6. Factory-reset only as an escalation

Google describes a factory reset as returning Chromecast or a Google TV Streamer to its default factory settings. It clears installed apps, accounts, Wi-Fi details, preferences, and other user data, and it cannot be undone. Make sure you know the account credentials and Wi-Fi password needed for setup before proceeding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reset from the settings menu

  1. Open Settings > System > About.
  2. Select Factory reset.
  3. Read the warning and confirm the reset.

The device will restart and display the initial setup flow. Reinstall apps gradually rather than restoring everything at once; that makes it easier to identify an app that reintroduces the slowdown.

Reset with the physical button

Use this method when you cannot reach the menus:

  1. Leave the Chromecast plugged in and powered.
  2. Press and hold the button on the device.
  3. Continue holding until the LED turns solid white.
  4. Release the button and allow the reset and reboot to finish.

For update trouble, Google recommends setting the device up again, preferably on a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network if that option is available. A 2.4 GHz connection can be more tolerant of distance and walls during setup, but it will not repair a hardware fault or a bad power supply.

7. Separate network trouble from slow software

An Ethernet connection can help when the symptom is buffering, connection drops, or unstable streaming while menus remain responsive. Google documents Ethernet through a separately sold compatible adapter as an option for home Wi-Fi problems. Restart the router, check other devices on the same network, and test a different streaming app before buying or installing anything.

Ethernet will not fix delayed menu navigation, a failed firmware installation, or a reboot loop. Check the adapter’s compatibility and power requirements for your Chromecast model; the relevant benefit is a more reliable network path, not extra processing power.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. A practical decision tree

The home screen is slow, but the device stays on

  1. Restart through Settings > System > Restart.
  2. Force-stop recently opened apps.
  3. Run Play Store > profile > Manage apps & games > Updates > Update all.
  4. Check Settings > System > About > System update.
  5. After updates finish, restart and test again.

Streaming buffers while menus respond normally

  1. Restart the router and check whether other devices lose connectivity.
  2. Move the Chromecast or router to improve signal if practical.
  3. Check the streaming app for its own update.
  4. Consider a compatible Ethernet adapter only if Wi-Fi remains the clear cause.

The update screen is taking too long

  1. Watch for progress for at least the normal 10–12-minute window.
  2. If it is progressing slowly, allow up to roughly 20–30 minutes.
  3. Verify power and connectivity.
  4. If there is still no progress, disconnect power for one minute and reconnect.

The Chromecast repeatedly reboots

  1. Disconnect power for one minute and reconnect.
  2. If Android recovery appears, choose Try again.
  3. If recovery returns, use Factory data reset.
  4. If the loop continues after setup, document the build and screen message before contacting support.

9. What to record before contacting support

Collecting precise information prevents a generic restart cycle with support:

  • Model: Chromecast with Google TV (HD) or (4K).
  • System build shown on the device, including whether it is UTTC.250917.004 or another build.
  • Whether the reboot occurs during startup, while navigating menus, during an update, or only during streaming.
  • The exact wording of any recovery or error screen.
  • Whether the device is powered from a wall adapter or a television USB port.
  • Every step already attempted and the result of each one.

If the restart loop remains after the documented recovery and reset paths, Google directs users to the Google TV Help Community, feedback channels, or the device manufacturer. Do not describe the update as a confirmed cause unless Google publishes a notice establishing that connection.

Keeping the device stable after recovery

  • Keep the power adapter firmly connected and avoid interrupting an installation.
  • Let app updates finish before judging menu performance.
  • Install apps in small groups after a reset so a problematic app is easier to identify.
  • Use the on-device System update screen for firmware checks; do not rely on the Google Home app to show Chromecast updates.
  • When reporting the issue, distinguish HD from 4K and include the full build identifier.
