What to Do if CHKDSK Stays Stuck in Stage 4 (Windows 11)

A CHKDSK scan that sits at stage 4 for a long time is not automatically frozen, and it does not by itself mean the drive has failed. Microsoft’s CHKDSK reference says that a read-level scan on a large hard disk can take a considerable time, and it does not publish a stage-4 runtime or a safe point at which a scan can be interrupted. So the right first move is to find out whether the scan is still working, protect your files, and only then decide whether to wait, check the results, or stop it.

Why a stage-4 pause is not the same as a hang

CHKDSK reports progress in stages, and the time each stage takes depends on the disk and on the switches you used. The switch matters most. The /f parameter fixes logical file-system errors. The /r parameter goes further: according to Microsoft Learn’s CHKDSK command reference (last updated 2025-05-26), it looks for physical disk errors and attempts to recover readable data from affected sectors. Recovering from sectors means reading them, and that is slow on large mechanical drives.

Microsoft also notes that the physical read speed of a large HDD can become the bottleneck for /r and /b scans, even when the drive has no errors and little data on it. In other words, a long wait at one stage can be normal behavior, not evidence of a fault. The reference does not say how many hours any stage should take, so no number in this article should be read as an official expectation.

Step 1: Check whether the scan is actually progressing

Before you change anything, gather evidence over a reasonable window rather than judging from a single glance at the screen.

  1. Watch the drive activity indicator on your PC or case, if it has one. Regular flashing suggests the disk is still being read.
  2. Listen to the drive. Steady, normal activity is different from repeated clicking, grinding, or a sound that changes pattern.
  3. Note the time, then check again after a while. If the percentage or the activity changes, the scan is moving.
  4. Identify the drive type. Windows’ critical storage warning feature covers NVM SSDs only (see below), so the type affects how much weight a clean status should carry.

If the activity has stopped, the disk is silent, or the drive is making unusual sounds, go to the next section before doing anything else.

Step 2: Protect your data first

If Windows still starts and your files open normally, copy anything important to a separate drive before running another repair. Repair operations write to the disk, and a damaged sector or an interrupted scan can make some files harder to recover later. CHKDSK cannot promise to restore data, so a backup is the only dependable safeguard.

Microsoft Support’s guidance on critical storage warnings also recommends backing up data and contacting support when Windows reports a serious problem. Treat that advice as the top priority in any situation involving a warning.

Signs that change the plan

Some symptoms mean repeated scans are no longer the right approach:

  • Windows shows a critical storage warning. Microsoft says this can indicate degraded reliability caused by significant media-related errors or an internal NVM subsystem error, and recommends backing up and contacting support.
  • The drive has disappeared from File Explorer or Disk Management, or appears intermittently.
  • The drive makes repeated clicking, grinding, or other sounds that do not settle down.
  • Files that were readable earlier now fail to open, or you see new errors when copying.

When any of these appear, back up readable files first and seek professional or manufacturer support. Running additional full scans can keep stressing a failing drive without making it more recoverable.

Is it safe to turn off my PC?

Microsoft’s documentation does not establish a safe interruption rule for a CHKDSK run that appears stalled, so there is no official basis for saying a forced shutdown is harmless. A repair that is writing to the disk can be left incomplete if power is cut, and the next check may then be needed. If the scan is genuinely making progress, waiting is usually the lower-risk choice. If it has stopped with no activity for an extended period and you have no backup, the decision is a judgment call; make it knowing that interruption is a risk, not a documented-safe action.

What the official switches do

Parameter What Microsoft says it does What to expect
/f Corrects logical disk errors. CHKDSK must be able to lock the drive to correct them. Without /f, CHKDSK can report errors without fixing them. Locking may require a restart if the volume is in use.
/r Looks for physical disk errors and attempts to recover data from affected sectors. Includes a full read of the surface; can take considerable time on a large HDD.

On SSDs, Microsoft’s CHKDSK page says repeated full-surface scans, especially with /r, can add slightly to write and erase cycles. It describes occasional checks as not a significant concern, so a single long scan is not a reason to avoid running one when it is needed.

Check the result instead of rerunning the scan

When CHKDSK finishes, its outcome is recorded in the Windows event log. Open Event Viewer and go to Windows Logs > Application, then filter for the event sources Chkdsk and Wininit. You can also retrieve the same entries from PowerShell with Get-WinEvent; for example:

Get-WinEvent -LogName Application -ProviderName Chkdsk | Select-Object -First 10 TimeCreated, Message

Read the most recent entries before deciding on another run. If the log shows that the scan completed and fixed errors, rerunning it immediately rarely adds information. If it shows unrecovered problems, the next step is the storage check below.

Check drive health once Windows is accessible

  1. Open Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Select Advanced storage settings, then Disks & volumes.
  3. Select the disk and choose Properties to view its health details.

This view is the place to look for the critical warning, but its coverage is limited. Microsoft says Windows’ critical health monitoring applies to NVM SSDs and does not monitor SATA SSDs or HDDs through this feature. A clean status on a hard disk or SATA SSD therefore does not rule out a problem.

If Windows will not start

If the stuck scan happened during startup and Windows cannot get past it, Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) is where the next options are. Microsoft’s “Recovery options in Windows” guidance applies here, with three cautions:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

  • If BitLocker is enabled, you need the BitLocker recovery key for most WinRE recovery options. Locate it before you start, for example from your Microsoft account or your organization’s key store.
  • Some recovery options can cause data loss.
  • Reinstalling from installation media may erase everything on the drive. Use it only after you have a backup or have confirmed that no data needs to be kept.

A USB installation or recovery drive is a means of reinstalling Windows, not a repair for a long scan. It should not be the first answer to a CHKDSK that is still running.

Running CHKDSK from an elevated prompt

Microsoft Support’s Windows installation troubleshooting guidance includes a CHKDSK repair step that requires administrator permission. To run a check yourself, open Command Prompt as administrator and enter a command such as chkdsk C: /f, substituting the drive letter you need. If the volume is in use, Windows may offer to run the check at the next restart.

A practical decision path

Situation Next step
Activity or percentage is changing, no warnings, no unusual sounds Wait, and check again over time. Back up readable files in parallel.
Activity has stopped, Windows is still accessible Back up important files, then check the event log before deciding whether to interrupt.
Critical storage warning, or unusual noises, or the drive disappears Back up readable data and contact support. Avoid repeated full scans.
Scan completed Read the Chkdsk and Wininit entries in the event log before rerunning anything.
Windows will not start Confirm you have the BitLocker key, back up if possible, then use WinRE options with the cautions above.

Official Microsoft guidance does not give a universal stage-4 time limit or a safe forced-shutdown threshold. Any timing decision should rest on the signals above, not on a number quoted from a forum.
