The safest immediate response is to stop taking more, move to a quiet and physically safe place, stay with a trusted sober person if possible, breathe slowly, and avoid driving, alcohol and other drugs. Most importantly, check for danger signs: severe confusion, hallucinations, repeated or severe vomiting, an extremely fast heartbeat, collapse, a seizure or trouble breathing require urgent professional help.
This guide explains what you can do now, when to call a poison center or emergency service, why edibles can catch people off guard, and how to get help if cannabis-related anxiety keeps returning.

What to do in the first few minutes
An anxious reaction can feel frightening, but fear itself does not tell you how dangerous the situation is. Focus first on preventing additional exposure and reducing immediate risks. If you are alone, contact someone you trust and tell them you are feeling unwell after using cannabis. Stay on the phone while you arrange for them to come or while you contact medical advice.
- Stop using cannabis. Do not take another inhalation, edible portion or concentrate dose, even if you think the first amount has not worked yet. Put the product out of reach so an anxious or impaired decision does not lead to another dose.
- Get somewhere safe. Sit or lie down away from traffic, heights, water, machinery and other hazards. Reduce noise, bright light and crowding if that makes you feel less overwhelmed. Keep a clear path to a bathroom and a phone.
- Ask a sober, trusted person to stay. Tell them what you used, approximately how much and when. A sober person can monitor you, keep you from driving and call for help if symptoms worsen. If no one can come, stay connected by phone and tell the person your location.
- Try slow, comfortable breathing. Breathe in gently and make the exhale a little longer than the inhale. Stop if you feel light-headed. Breathing can help with anxiety; it does not remove THC or guarantee that intoxication will end quickly.
- Do not drive, cycle on roads or operate equipment. Impairment and panic can make ordinary decisions and movements unsafe. Hand over keys and avoid walking near traffic or other hazards.
- Do not add alcohol or other recreational drugs. Combining substances can increase impairment and make symptoms harder to assess. Prescription and over-the-counter medicines can also interact, so ask a healthcare professional about your own medicines.
These steps are supportive measures, not a way to “cancel” cannabis. Do not try to counteract the reaction with CBD, another drug, supplements or unverified home remedies. No official guidance cited here establishes those as safe acute treatments. Do not force food or drink if the person is confused, vomiting or having trouble swallowing.

A simple safety check
Every few minutes, ask yourself or the person helping: “Are you awake? Are you breathing normally? Can you answer simple questions? Are symptoms improving, stable or getting worse?” Note the product, estimated amount, route (smoked, vaped or eaten), time taken and any alcohol, medicines or other drugs. Keep the package or a photo of its label for a poison specialist. This information can be more useful than trying to calculate an exact THC dose.
If the person is awake and answering normally, keep them seated or lying safely, use a calm voice and continue observation. Do not argue about whether frightening thoughts are true; acknowledge that the experience feels real and focus on safety. If the person becomes hard to wake, has a seizure or cannot breathe normally, stop the routine check and call emergency services.
Know when anxiety has become an emergency
Cannabis overconsumption can involve confusion, a very fast heart rate, hallucinations, increased blood pressure, severe nausea or vomiting and marked disorientation. Symptoms that are severe, getting worse or simply concerning should prompt a call to a poison center or healthcare professional. A life-threatening sign warrants emergency services immediately.

| What you observe | What to do |
|---|---|
| Fear, racing thoughts, mild panic, uneasiness or paranoia while the person is awake, breathing normally and able to answer | Stop cannabis, provide a calm safe place, stay with them and monitor. Use slow breathing and arrange professional advice if symptoms are difficult to manage. |
| Severe confusion, inability to stay oriented, hallucinations, a very fast heartbeat, severe or repeated vomiting, or symptoms that are worsening | Contact a poison center or healthcare professional promptly. Keep the person supervised and do not let them drive. |
| Collapse, seizure, trouble breathing, inability to wake the person, or another immediately life-threatening problem | Call emergency services now. Follow the dispatcher’s instructions and remain with the person until help arrives. |
Do not wait for every warning sign to appear. A poison specialist can help decide whether home monitoring is reasonable, especially when the product or amount is unknown. If you are uncertain whether a symptom is an emergency, explain exactly what is happening and ask.
United States
For suspected poisoning in the US, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. Call 911 for an emergency. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides these numbers in its cannabis guidance: Cannabis Frequently Asked Questions and Cannabis and Poisoning.
Australia
healthdirect Australia advises calling 000 for a suspected overdose. Its cannabis information is available at Cannabis (marijuana).
Other countries and territories
Use your local emergency number and poison-information service. Numbers and response systems differ by country; do not assume that the US or Australian numbers work where you are. If you are unsure which service to call, an emergency operator or local healthcare professional can direct you. Give your country and location first so the service can route you correctly.

Why cannabis can cause anxiety or panic
“Cannabis use can cause disorientation and sometimes unpleasant thoughts or feelings of anxiety and paranoia.” — Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Cannabis and Mental Health, February 15, 2024.
Intoxication can make ordinary sensations or thoughts feel unfamiliar and threatening. A pounding heart, dizziness or dry mouth may be interpreted as danger, escalating fear. The reaction is not proof that you have permanently harmed your brain, but it is a reason to stop taking more and assess safety. Cannabis is not universally calming, and an earlier pleasant experience does not guarantee the next one will be similar.
There is no reliable “safe amount” that predicts how one person will feel. The CDC notes that reactions vary with several factors:
- prior experience with cannabis;
- individual biology and sensitivity;
- the route of use and THC concentration;
- the amount consumed and how often it is used; and
- other substances taken at the same time.
These variables can explain why a dose that felt manageable on one occasion feels overwhelming on another. They are not a diagnostic calculator and cannot predict exactly when your symptoms will end. A clinician can consider these factors alongside your medical history rather than trying to diagnose yourself from one episode.

Edibles need special caution
Edible cannabis is delayed and less predictable. The CDC says intoxicating effects can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to appear, and that effects can last longer than expected. THC strength may be difficult to measure, and labels can be inaccurate: Cannabis and Poisoning (published, updated and reviewed February 15, 2024).
The delay creates a common hazard: someone takes more before the first amount is felt, then both amounts take effect. If you have eaten cannabis and feel nothing yet, do not use the absence of early effects as a reason to redose. Do not promise yourself or someone else that symptoms will end at a particular hour. If effects are lasting longer than expected, remain in a safe place and ask a poison center or clinician for individualized advice.
| Situation | Safer response |
|---|---|
| You ate cannabis less than two hours ago and effects are still developing | Take nothing more. Stay in a safe place with a sober person and watch for increasing impairment or vomiting. |
| You are unsure of the product’s THC amount or the portion consumed | Tell the poison center or clinician exactly what you know, including the package, label and time taken. Do not guess a dose or take another substance to balance it. |
| Symptoms continue longer than you expected | Do not drive or remain alone. Contact a poison center or healthcare professional for advice, especially if symptoms are severe or worsening. |
Edibles also make it easy to forget how much was taken, particularly when portions are shared or packaging is confusing. Write down the time and amount as soon as you can. If a child or pet may have eaten cannabis, treat that as a poisoning concern and contact the appropriate poison or emergency service rather than waiting for symptoms.

Calming techniques that do not add risk
Use breathing as an anxiety skill
Try a gentle rhythm: inhale comfortably, then let the exhale last slightly longer. Keep your shoulders relaxed and avoid forceful deep breaths. If counting makes you more anxious, stop counting and simply slow down. NHS guidance for anxiety, fear and panic includes calming breathing exercises, but that is general anxiety advice rather than a cannabis-specific antidote: Anxiety, fear and panic.
Lower stimulation
Move away from loud music, arguments, crowds and intense screens if they are making sensations worse. A familiar room and a calm, reassuring voice may be easier to tolerate. Keep lighting comfortable and avoid activities that require judgment. This is practical risk reduction, not a promise that a particular environment will end intoxication.
Stay connected to a sober person
A helper should speak slowly, avoid confrontation and remind the person that they have stopped taking cannabis and are being monitored. The helper should check that the person is breathing normally and can respond, while being ready to call for professional assistance. Offer simple choices, such as sitting on a sofa or lying on a bed, rather than giving complicated instructions. Do not restrain someone who is frightened unless there is an immediate safety threat; instead, remove hazards and seek emergency guidance.
What not to do while you are anxious
- Do not redose. This is particularly important with edibles because effects may be delayed.
- Do not mix substances. Alcohol and other drugs can compound impairment. Medicines can interact in ways that require individualized medical advice.
- Do not drive yourself to get help. Ask a sober person, call emergency services or use local medical advice.
- Do not rely on folk remedies. Claims that CBD, black pepper, a shower, sleep, supplements or a particular food will reverse a bad reaction are not established by the official guidance cited here.
- Do not leave a severely impaired person alone. Someone who is vomiting repeatedly, confused, hallucinating or difficult to wake needs professional assessment.
- Do not conceal what was taken. Accurate information about cannabis, alcohol, medicines and other drugs helps professionals choose safer advice.
How long will the anxiety last?
It is not possible to give a fixed duration for cannabis-related anxiety or intoxication. Route, dose, THC concentration, individual biology, previous experience and combinations with other substances all affect the course. Edibles can last longer than expected, and inaccurate or unclear labeling makes timing even less predictable.
NHS general anxiety guidance says a panic attack usually lasts 5 to 20 minutes. That statistic describes panic attacks generally; it does not establish that cannabis effects or cannabis-related anxiety will end within 5 to 20 minutes. If distress remains intense, returns repeatedly, or is accompanied by severe physical or mental symptoms, seek medical advice rather than waiting for a predicted deadline.

Continue the safety steps and monitoring. A brief calm period is not a reason to drive, take more cannabis or combine substances.
When to contact a healthcare professional after the episode
Arrange medical advice if you cannot manage the anxiety, if symptoms keep returning after cannabis use, or if you are uncertain whether another health problem or medicine interaction is involved. A clinician can review your symptoms, other substances and prescriptions without assuming that every episode has the same cause. Tell them whether the anxiety began immediately or after a delay, how long it lasted, and whether paranoia, vomiting, confusion or a very fast heartbeat occurred.

NHS guidance states: “If you’re struggling to cope with feelings of anxiety, fear and panic and the things you’re doing are not helping, then you may need medical help.” — National Health Service, Anxiety, fear and panic, last reviewed July 13, 2026. General anxiety support may include speaking with a friend, family member, healthcare professional or counselor, alongside breathing exercises and other appropriate care.
Seek urgent help rather than arranging a routine appointment when there is severe confusion, hallucinations, severe vomiting, an extremely fast heartbeat, collapse, a seizure, trouble breathing or any other emergency sign.
Reducing the chance of another frightening reaction
The most reliable way to avoid another cannabis-triggered episode is not to use cannabis again. If you are making decisions about future use, discuss your history with a healthcare professional first, particularly if you take medicines, have a mental-health condition, or have previously experienced panic, paranoia or disorientation. Repeated episodes are a reason to seek support, not to keep experimenting until you find a dose that feels predictable.
Never use an old experience as a guarantee for a new product or dose. Products differ in THC concentration and labeling accuracy, and your physical state, other substances and surroundings can change the reaction. If cannabis is present in your home, keep it away from children and pets in a locked, child-resistant container; that is a prevention measure, not treatment for acute anxiety.
Key points for a friend or family member helping
- Ask what was taken, how much is known about the amount, and when it was taken.
- Move the person away from hazards and keep a sober adult with them.
- Use a calm voice and encourage comfortable, slow breathing without promising a quick cure.
- Prevent driving and further substance use.
- Watch for confusion, hallucinations, severe vomiting, a very fast heartbeat, collapse, seizure or breathing problems.
- Call the appropriate poison service or emergency number for the person’s country when symptoms are severe, worsening or life-threatening.
- Keep the product package available and note any alcohol, medicines or other drugs.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do first if cannabis suddenly makes me anxious?
Stop taking cannabis, move to a physically safe and quieter place, and stay with a trusted sober person if possible. Try comfortable, slow breathing, avoid driving, and do not add alcohol or other drugs.
Should I take more cannabis if I do not feel the edible yet?
No. Edibles can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to feel intoxicating effects, may last longer than expected and may have inaccurate THC labeling. Taking more before the first portion is felt can lead to excessive effects.
Can CBD, black pepper, food or a shower cancel THC?
Do not rely on these methods as treatment. The official guidance cited here does not establish CBD, supplements, food, black pepper, a shower or another folk remedy as a safe way to reverse an acute reaction.
Best Value
When should I call Poison Control in the United States?
Call 1-800-222-1222 for suspected poisoning or symptoms that are severe, worsening or concerning, such as severe confusion, hallucinations, a very fast heartbeat or repeated vomiting. Call 911 for collapse, seizure, trouble breathing, inability to wake the person or another emergency.
What number should I call in Australia?
healthdirect Australia advises calling 000 for a suspected overdose. Elsewhere, use your local emergency number and poison-information service.
How long will cannabis anxiety last?
There is no dependable fixed duration. Route, dose, THC concentration, biology, prior experience, frequency and other substances all affect the course. NHS says a general panic attack usually lasts 5 to 20 minutes, but that does not predict the duration of cannabis intoxication.
Can I sleep alone after taking cannabis and feeling panicky?
Do not remain alone if you are severely impaired, vomiting, confused, hallucinating or difficult to wake. Have a sober person monitor you and contact a poison center or clinician when symptoms are severe or worsening.
Can I drive once I feel a little calmer?
No. Feeling calmer does not prove that impairment has ended. Do not drive, cycle on roads or operate equipment; ask a sober person or emergency service about transport if you need care.
What if cannabis anxiety keeps happening?
Arrange an appointment with a healthcare professional, especially if episodes recur, are hard to manage or may involve a medicine interaction or another health problem. The safest way to prevent another cannabis-triggered episode is not to use cannabis again.
What information should I give a clinician or poison specialist?
Describe the product and package if available, route, estimated amount, time taken, symptoms, changes over time, and any alcohol, medicines or other drugs. Do not worry about having a perfect dose estimate; explain what you know.

The Bottom Line
Stop taking more cannabis, get to a safe low-stimulation place, stay with a sober person and avoid driving, alcohol and other drugs. Slow breathing may ease anxiety but does not reverse intoxication. For severe confusion, hallucinations, severe vomiting, a very fast heartbeat or worsening symptoms, contact a poison service or healthcare professional; call emergency services for collapse, seizure, trouble breathing or inability to wake the person. Use the emergency and poison numbers for your own country.
