Start by treating the port as one possible cause, not the only one. Check Settings > Battery > Battery usage, compare the timing with any Android update or setup, and test the phone in Safe Mode. If the port is using abnormal background power or the crashes stop when downloaded apps are disabled, force-stop and remove the port (or other recently installed apps) one at a time. Keep Google Play Protect enabled, revoke unknown-app installation access after removing the software, and postpone a factory reset until app-level troubleshooting and a backup are complete.
If the phone is dangerously hot, losing charge unusually fast, repeatedly restarting, or becoming difficult to control, stop using the port and uninstall it when you can do so safely. Do not keep running questionable software merely to collect more evidence.

First, record what changed
Before changing settings, write down the Pixel model, Android version, the port’s exact name and version, where you obtained it, how it was installed, and when the battery drain or crashes began. Also note whether the problem appeared immediately after an Android update, a security patch, a factory reset, or installation of another app. A port can conflict with a particular Pixel generation or Android release, but no compatibility conclusion is reliable without those details.
Capture a screenshot of the battery-usage screen if the phone remains stable. For crashes, note whether the app closes by itself, the entire phone freezes, the device restarts, or only a specific feature fails. These are different failure modes and are useful when you contact Google or the port’s legitimate maintainer.

Rule out normal post-update battery activity
Google says that “After a software update, it’s normal for your Pixel battery to drain a little more than usual.” The phone may be downloading, compiling, and optimizing software in the background. Google advises comparing the behavior after a few days rather than treating every short-lived increase as evidence that a port is broken. After a new-device setup or factory reset, Google says battery optimization can take a few weeks to settle.
That explanation fits mild, temporary drain after an update. It does not explain a port that suddenly consumes most of the battery, keeps the phone hot while idle, causes repeated crashes, or triggers severe instability. If the drain remains unusual beyond the short post-update period, continue with the checks below.
Check which app is using the battery
Open the per-app report
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery, then Battery usage. Menu wording can vary slightly by Android release.
- Review the apps listed for the period in which the drain occurred. Select the suspected port and inspect foreground and background activity.
A high percentage beside the port is a strong lead, not absolute proof. A different downloaded app, a stuck synchronization task, weak cellular coverage, or system work after an update can also increase consumption. Compare the port with other apps and with the time the phone was idle.

Use optimization conservatively
Google recommends leaving each app’s battery setting at Optimized in normal circumstances. If the port is listed as unrestricted, change it back to the standard optimized setting unless you have a specific, documented reason not to. Do not disable optimization globally as a first response; that can allow more background activity and make the diagnosis harder.

Force-stop before uninstalling
From the port’s app-information screen, choose Force stop, confirm, and watch the phone for a while. Force stopping is reversible and can end a runaway background process. If the battery drain or crashes return when the port is launched, uninstall it rather than repeatedly force-stopping it.
Also check for Android and app updates. Install an update only from the Pixel’s normal system updater or from the port’s trusted official maintainer. Do not assume that an update exists, and do not use a mirror or modified package simply because it has a newer-looking version number.
Use Safe Mode to separate the port from other downloaded apps
Safe Mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. It is a diagnostic, not a permanent operating mode. If the problem disappears there, at least one downloaded app is likely involved; that result does not by itself prove that the feature port is responsible.

Pixel 6 and later
- Press Power + Volume Up to open the power menu.
- Touch and hold Power off or Restart.
- When the Safe Mode confirmation appears, tap OK.
Some Safe Mode sessions remove or rearrange home-screen widgets, and Airplane mode turns on automatically. These changes are temporary. Test the symptoms without launching downloaded apps: leave the phone idle, open built-in apps, and see whether the crashes or abnormal heat recur.

Pixel 5a and earlier
Earlier Pixels use a different power-menu gesture. Open the power menu with the phone’s power button, then touch and hold the on-screen Power off option and confirm Safe Mode. Exact labels can differ by Android release. If the option does not appear, use the shutdown and restart instructions shown for your model in Google’s Pixel support documentation rather than guessing at a button combination.
Interpret the result
- The issue stops in Safe Mode: a downloaded app is implicated. Restart normally, then remove recent apps one at a time, testing after each removal. Start with the port and any app installed or updated immediately before the symptoms began.
- The issue continues in Safe Mode: the cause may be Android, a system component, storage, thermal or battery hardware, or a problem that Safe Mode does not isolate. Do not claim that the port is responsible solely because it was installed recently.
To leave Safe Mode, restart the phone normally. If widgets are missing afterward, add them again; that is an expected side effect of the diagnostic mode.
Remove the port safely
Uninstall when the phone is stable
Return to normal mode, open Settings > Apps, select the port, and choose Uninstall. Confirm the removal and restart the Pixel. If the app cannot be uninstalled from its information page, check whether it was granted a special device-management permission or whether the installer created another component. Remove only permissions and components you recognize; do not follow instructions that require disabling security checks or installing an additional “cleaner.”

If Safe Mode implicated downloaded software but the port is not clearly at fault, uninstall recent apps individually. Restart after each removal and observe the same activity that originally exposed the problem. Removing several apps at once hides the cause and makes it harder to know what to reinstall.

Update only through the legitimate channel
If the port has a genuine official maintainer, check that maintainer’s original release page or in-app update mechanism for a version explicitly supporting your Pixel model and Android release. Verify the package name and version before installing. If there is no trustworthy update, leave the port uninstalled. A random repackaged APK can preserve the crash, add unwanted behavior, or make later diagnosis impossible.

Google recommends leaving Google Play Protect on. It scans apps from Google Play and checks apps installed from other sources. Depending on its assessment, it may warn you, deactivate an app, or remove one it considers potentially harmful. Treat a warning as a security signal and stop using the flagged software while you investigate. A warning does not prove that every unofficial feature port is malicious, but bypassing it is not a sensible routine fix.
Android allows installation from outside Play through a per-source permission. After removing the port or finishing a one-time installation, revoke that permission:

- Tap Apps.
- Choose Special app access.
- Tap Install unknown apps.
- Select the browser, file manager, or other source that was allowed to install the package, then turn off Allow from this source.
Google warns that apps from unknown sources can put the phone and personal information at risk, including possible data loss or damage. Obtaining an app outside Play is not automatically proof of malicious intent, but it increases the importance of a verifiable maintainer, a matching package signature, and a clear uninstall path.
What to do when the problem persists outside Safe Mode
If the phone still crashes, overheats, or drains rapidly in Safe Mode, broaden the diagnosis instead of repeatedly reinstalling the port. Install pending Android updates if the device is stable enough, check available storage, and look for a pattern involving charging, cellular reception, Bluetooth, or a particular built-in app. Do not present any of those checks as proof of a hardware fault; they are ways to identify a broader system condition.
Contact Google Pixel support or the device and port maintainer with the exact model, Android build, port version, installation source, timestamps, battery-usage screenshot, crash wording, and Safe Mode result. Tell them whether the issue began after an update and whether uninstalling the port changed anything. Compatibility instructions that omit the Android build or Pixel generation can be unsafe or simply wrong.
Reserve a factory reset for advanced troubleshooting
A factory reset is not the first-line fix for one unstable app. Google places it in advanced troubleshooting and warns that it removes installed apps and their associated data. Before resetting, back up photos, messages, authenticator data, files, and anything stored only on the phone; confirm that you can sign back into the accounts needed to restore them.
Use a reset only after checking battery usage, testing Safe Mode, removing the suspect software, and applying ordinary system updates. If you do reset, test the Pixel before restoring every app. Reinstall apps gradually, beginning with essential software, because reinstalling an app that caused the original problem can bring the issue back. Do not restore the port automatically just to see whether it works; obtain a confirmed compatible release first.

Information to include when asking for help
- Pixel model, storage capacity if relevant, and Android version or build number.
- Port name, version, package source, and the date it was installed or last updated.
- Whether installation used a browser, file manager, an alternative store, or another method.
- Battery percentage change, charging state, temperature symptoms, and the app shown in Battery usage.
- Crash behavior: app-only closure, freeze, restart, error message, or boot-loop symptoms.
- Whether the issue appears in Safe Mode and what changed after uninstalling the port.
- Any Play Protect warning and the exact wording shown on screen.
Those details let support distinguish a temporary post-update workload from an app conflict and avoid giving instructions that do not match your Pixel generation or Android release.
