If Android says an unknown Bluetooth tracker may be moving with you, treat the alert as a safety signal—not proof of who placed the device or why. Open the alert, use its map and sound tools to locate the tracker if it is safe, preserve the evidence, and get to a public place or contact help if you feel threatened. Do not rely on turning off your phone’s Bluetooth, Location, or Airplane Mode: only disabling the tracker itself stops its future location updates.
First, get to a safe situation
Your physical safety matters more than finding a small device. If you feel watched, followed, or otherwise at risk, go to a busy public place such as a shop, library, hotel desk, police station, or staffed transit area. Contact local law enforcement or someone you trust. You can investigate the alert from there, with another person present.

Do not confront a suspected person or search an unsafe location alone. If handling the tracker could reveal your location or escalate the situation, leave it where it is and ask authorities or a trusted person to help.
When it is safe, preserve the alert before doing anything that could remove information. Take screenshots of the notification, map, timestamps, tracker name or identifier, and any instructions shown under Next steps. Android deletes unknown-tracker alerts after 48 hours, so screenshots can be important if you later need to explain what happened.

What an Android unknown-tracker alert means
The alert means Android detected a compatible tracker that is not associated with your phone and that appears to have moved with you over time. It does not identify the person who owns it, prove that someone deliberately planted it, or show the owner’s current location checks.
There are innocent explanations. A tracker can be attached to something you borrowed, packed in shared luggage, or carried by another person who is traveling with you. The alert is a reason to investigate and consider safety precautions, not proof of malicious intent.
Google’s current Android guidance covers Find Hub network-compatible tags and headphones and Apple AirTags. Not every Bluetooth device is included. Android considers multiple factors and physical movement over time, so an alert is not necessarily immediate. Google documents one alert per tracker per day.

- Tap the unknown-tracker notification. If it has disappeared, open the relevant unknown-tracker section in Settings and check for recent alerts.
- Review the map and the times shown. The map represents places where your phone detected the tracker traveling with it. It does not represent places where the tracker’s owner opened an app or requested its location.
- Note the tracker’s name, device identifier, detection times, and any device-specific instructions. Capture screenshots while the map and details are visible.
A changing or unfamiliar identifier does not necessarily mean a completely different device. Trackers regularly change their random Bluetooth device ID. Android may therefore treat the same physical tracker as a new tracker in a later scan or alert.
Find the tracker without putting yourself at risk
Play the tracker’s sound
In the alert, tap Play sound. Listen around bags, pockets, the vehicle, and nearby furniture. Google says playing the sound does not notify the tracker’s owner.

If you hear nothing, move slowly through the area and try again. The tracker may be out of Bluetooth range, hidden inside an object, too quiet to hear, or using a different device ID. A silent attempt does not establish that the alert was false.
Use Find Nearby when it is offered
For a compatible Find Hub network tracker, open Next steps and choose Find nearby. Follow the proximity guidance as you move. This option is not shown for every tracker type.

Search your belongings and retrace the route
If you cannot hear the sound, check the places a small tag could be concealed: coat and trouser pockets, backpack compartments, luggage seams, shopping bags, child equipment, and the underside or interior of your car. Search only where you can do so safely and without exposing yourself to a person you fear.
Use the alert’s map to retrace your route when that is safe. A tracker may have fallen out, remained in a vehicle, or stopped communicating when you left its range. If another person is with you, ask them to watch while you inspect belongings.
Run a manual scan
A manual scan looks for compatible trackers that are currently nearby and separated from their owner. It can help you find a misplaced device, but it cannot prove that a tracker traveled with you. A device belonging to a nearby stranger can appear in a scan.

On current Android menu layouts, use:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Safety & emergency.
- Choose Unknown tracker alerts.
- Tap Scan now.
Google says the scan takes about 10 seconds. Run another scan after moving to a different safe location or after checking your belongings. Device manufacturers can rename or relocate menus, so the labels on your phone may differ.

Identify the device and preserve information
If you find the tracker, leave it in place until you have considered your safety and evidence needs. Open Next steps for instructions specific to that device.
For an AirTag, bringing the tag close to the back of an Android phone can reveal additional identification information. Other trackers may display an identifier or owner information through their own identification instructions. Photograph the device, its markings, and where you found it if doing so is safe.
Keep the original screenshots and write down the times, locations, route, and people who were present. Do not post the tracker’s identifier or your map publicly; share it with a trusted person or law enforcement when appropriate.

Decide whether to disable the tracker
Disabling the tracker stops it from sending future location updates, but it has consequences. The owner may still see the last location recorded while the tracker was operating. Google also warns that some trackers may be factory-reset when turned off, which could remove information law enforcement might use.

Do not guess at a shutdown method. Use the device-specific instructions shown by Android or supplied by the manufacturer. If you are unsure, let law enforcement or a qualified support person handle it.

Turning off Bluetooth on your phone does not stop the tracker from sharing its location. Neither does turning off your phone’s Location setting or enabling Airplane Mode. Google states that these phone settings do not stop a tracker’s ability to share its location.
The tracker communicates with nearby phones in its network; it is not dependent on your handset’s Bluetooth switch remaining enabled. To stop future updates, the tracker itself must be disabled according to its manufacturer’s instructions.

If you cannot find the tracker
A failed search does not show that the device is gone. It may be hidden in belongings, outside Bluetooth range, temporarily silent, or using a newly changed device ID.
- If safe, retrace the route shown on the alert’s map.
- Inspect bags, clothing, the car, and other items you carried.
- Run another 10-second manual scan from Settings > Safety & emergency > Unknown tracker alerts > Scan now.
- Keep your screenshots and notes because the alert itself is deleted after 48 hours.
- If another alert appears the following day, compare its times, route, and identifier with your saved evidence rather than assuming it is unrelated.
If you continue to feel unsafe, stop searching and ask law enforcement or a trusted person to help inspect your belongings and vehicle.
Why the alert may be late or absent
Android does not promise an instant warning. The system looks for a pattern of physical movement with the tracker and uses multiple factors before producing an alert. Google documents one alert per tracker per day.
A tracker might not play a sound or appear as expected when its owner is nearby, it was separated from the owner only recently, it is out of range, or its random device ID has changed. A manual scan can find a device that is nearby now even when Android has not established that it traveled with you.
Privacy, consent, and support
Google says unknown-tracker alerts use location information, detection timestamps, and a tracker device ID. That information is temporarily stored in encrypted form on the device and is not shared with Google or other users.
Google’s Find Hub acceptable-use policy says people may not use the network to track others or property that does not belong to them without knowledge and consent. Law enforcement may request additional identifying information to support an investigation.
Google lists WESNET Safety Net Australia, Refuge UK, and the Safety Net Project in the United States as additional safety resources. If you are elsewhere, contact local victim-support services, a domestic-abuse service, or law enforcement for region-specific help.
