Do not apply a BTP, ABAP or Commerce Cloud procedure to another SAP product; their token stores, revocation controls and validation behavior differ.
The sequence below is designed for administrators who need to stop ongoing access without destroying evidence or causing avoidable outages. It covers a suspected stolen access token, refresh token, client secret, service key, user account or server-side exploit. If you do not yet know which of those is involved, treat the uncertainty as an incident and work through the identification steps before making product-specific changes.

1. Identify exactly what may have been compromised
“SAP OAuth2 server” is not one implementation. Before revoking anything, record the product, edition, tenant or subaccount, region, connected applications and the component that validates tokens. At minimum, capture:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- SAP BTP Authorization and Trust Management Service, an ABAP system, SAP Commerce Cloud or another SAP product.
- Cloud Foundry space, BTP subaccount, ABAP system and client, Commerce Cloud environment, or other hosting boundary.
- OAuth client ID, user or service account, destination, integration flow and resource servers that could have accepted the credential.
- Whether the suspected artifact is an access token, refresh token, client secret, service key, signing key, password, user session or a software vulnerability.
- Whether resource servers validate tokens online (by checking revocation status) or offline (by validating a signed JWT locally).
- When suspicious activity began, the time zone used by logs, and which administrators or application owners are available to approve changes.
Take a read-only inventory before deleting clients or logs. A stolen access token is different from a stolen refresh token: the latter can be used to obtain additional access tokens, so it remains a continuing issuance path until you revoke or otherwise disable it using the product’s controls. A compromised client secret or service key can allow an attacker to mint new tokens even after currently observed tokens expire.

2. Contain the credential or client that can grant access
Containment should stop new issuance while application owners prepare replacements. Use the narrowest control that blocks the suspected path, and coordinate with teams that depend on the client so an emergency change does not silently break production.
For a suspected OAuth client or integration
- Disable the affected client, integration user or service credential where the product supports that operation.
- Restrict its scopes, destinations, network access or permissions if immediate disablement would interrupt a critical service and a narrower control is available.
- Block the affected application at the resource-server or API gateway layer when you need an additional barrier while token revocation propagates.
- Tell application owners exactly which client ID, scopes and systems are affected; do not send secrets through chat or ticket comments.
For a suspected user account
Disable or restrict the account through the identity system and investigate sign-in activity, multifactor-authentication events and administrator changes. A password reset is not a universal token-revocation mechanism: existing OAuth tokens may remain valid depending on the SAP product and validation mode. Perform the product-specific token revocation as a separate action.
For a suspected service key or client secret
Mark the key as exposed, stop using it, and plan replacement immediately. Inventory copies in CI/CD variables, destination configurations, integration middleware, source repositories, scripts and local operator files. Removing a key from one location does not invalidate a duplicate unless the service actually revokes or replaces the credential.

3. Revoke tokens using the matching SAP product control
There is no universal SAP OAuth revocation URL or transaction. Use the procedure documented for the exact deployment and record the operator, time, token or client scope and result.
SAP BTP Authorization and Trust Management Service
SAP documents revocation through the standard Cloud Foundry API revoke endpoint. Use that product’s documented API flow and permissions; do not substitute a generic OAuth endpoint from another platform. Revoke access tokens and refresh tokens associated with the affected client, user or grant where the API allows that scope. If you suspect a client secret or service key, revoke or replace the credential as well, because token revocation alone does not prevent that credential from creating a new grant.
BTP access tokens are signed JWTs. SAP documentation lists a default access-token validity of 12 hours, configurable in the application security descriptor xs-security.json. SAP security recommendations also list a default refresh-token validity of seven days. These are documented defaults, not guarantees for every tenant, plan or application; verify the effective values in your configuration. A refresh token that remains valid can outlast the access token you just revoked.

ABAP OAuth
Versioned SAP ABAP documentation describes both resource-owner and administrator token-context revocation. An authorized administrator can revoke token contexts through the relevant ABAP OAuth administration tools, while a resource owner can revoke contexts available to that owner. The operator’s authorization assignments determine which users, clients and token contexts are visible and revocable. Record the authorization used and check whether the result covered every suspected client and user; a successful action against one context does not prove that other contexts were revoked.
SAP Commerce Cloud
SAP documents OAuth revocation behavior for Commerce Cloud separately. Its guidance notes that a stolen refresh token can be used to obtain additional access tokens. Follow the Commerce Cloud procedure and configuration for the affected environment rather than copying BTP or ABAP instructions. Include refresh-token exposure in the incident scope even if no suspicious access token remains in the logs.
4. Confirm whether revocation is actually enforced
Revocation changes the authorization service’s state, but the resource server’s validation mode determines when that change stops requests.

| Validation mode | Revocation responsiveness | Availability trade-off | Operational action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online validation or introspection | The resource server can check whether the token is revoked and reject it after the revocation state is visible. | Requests depend on the authorization service or its reachable introspection path; an identity-service outage can affect availability. | Verify an actual request with the revoked token is rejected, and inspect or clear any application-side token cache. |
| Offline JWT validation | The application validates the signature and claims locally. A revoked token can continue to work until its expiry. | The application can keep validating tokens during an authorization-service outage. | Determine the token’s remaining lifetime, block the client or API path, clear caches and use gateway or application controls to stop access before expiry. |
SAP’s token-handling guidance also discusses invalid cached tokens after key rotation and handling 401 and 403 responses. Check every layer that may cache validation results: API gateways, application libraries, reverse proxies and background workers. Test the revoked credential against each important resource server, not just the authorization endpoint.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Rotate keys, secrets and service credentials
After containment and token revocation, replace every credential that could recreate access. Build an inventory from the affected client, service instance, destinations, deployment pipelines and integration platforms.
- Create a replacement client secret, service key or destination credential using the product’s supported administration process.
- Update dependent applications in a controlled order. Where dual credentials are supported, deploy the new value first, test authentication and then retire the old value.
- Revoke or delete the old secret or key and verify that an authentication attempt using it fails.
- Search repositories, build logs, container images, deployment manifests, ticket attachments and operator workstations for copies; remove exposed copies and restrict access to historical logs.
- Rotate related credentials that shared the same secret, signing material or privileged account. Do not assume the first discovered key was the only exposed one.
Forced key rotation can immediately invalidate keys and cause downtime until application caches clear. Treat it as an incident-containment decision: test the rotation behavior in a representative environment when time permits, announce the expected 401 or 403 errors to application owners, and keep a rollback or recovery plan that does not restore the compromised credential.

6. Preserve evidence before retention windows close
Export logs before changing configuration or deleting clients. Preserve the original files, their timestamps and integrity information under your organization’s incident-handling process. Keep a timeline that records discovery, containment, revocation, rotations, tests, outages and communications.
Logs and events to collect
- Authentication, token issuance, refresh and revocation events.
- OAuth client, service-key, destination, scope and redirect-URI changes.
- User, administrator and service-account activity, including failed and successful sign-ins.
- API calls made with the affected client or token, source addresses, user agents and response codes.
- Changes to trust configuration, signing keys, roles, authorizations, deployments and network controls.
- Application, gateway and middleware logs showing unusual scopes, volume, timing or 401/403 responses.
SAP documents signed security-relevant log files in BTP, but logging scope and retention vary by service and plan. SAP security recommendations list 90-day audit-log retention for some BTP services and recommend downloading and archiving logs when longer retention is required. Do not assume that period applies to your tenant. Verify the service-specific retention setting and export data needed for legal, regulatory or forensic review.
7. Scope what the attacker could do
Use the token’s scopes, client grants and resource-server permissions to define potential impact. Compare normal and suspicious activity rather than treating every token event as proof of compromise.
Recommended Free Tools
- List every API, destination, data set and administrative function permitted by the affected scopes.
- Identify whether the credential could read data, write business records, deploy software, change identity or issue further credentials.
- Search for persistence: new clients, service keys, redirect URIs, trust relationships, users, roles, destinations, scheduled jobs or modified applications.
- Look for data access, exports, configuration changes and lateral movement into connected systems.
- Preserve affected records before remediation changes alter the evidence, then involve legal, privacy and compliance teams if regulated data may be involved.
8. Contact SAP support with an actionable incident package
Use SAP’s customer security reporting route: SAP Report a Security Issue. SAP’s Trust Center describes customer and provider duties under a shared-responsibility model: “While SAP protects the platform, customers manage user access and configuration under a shared responsibility model—working together to keep systems secure.”
Include the affected product and version, tenant or system identifiers, support package and patch level where applicable, region, incident timeline, suspected exploit conditions, proof-of-concept details if appropriate, observed indicators, impact assessment and containment steps already completed. State whether tokens were revoked, whether validation is online or offline, which credentials were rotated, which logs were preserved and whether suspicious access is still possible. Share sensitive artifacts through SAP’s approved support channel, not ordinary email.
9. Recovery and verification checklist
Before declaring the incident contained, obtain evidence for each of these checks:
Quick Recap
- The exact SAP product and environment are documented, with owners assigned for every dependent application.
- The affected client, user, service key, secret or token path is disabled, restricted or replaced.
- Access and refresh tokens were revoked through the product-specific mechanism, and the scope of revocation is recorded.
- Resource servers reject revoked tokens, or compensating blocks remain in place until offline-validation tokens expire.
- Old secrets and keys fail authentication, while applications work with the replacements.
- Token caches, gateway caches and worker processes were cleared or restarted where required.
- Logs and configuration snapshots were exported and protected, with retention verified for the actual service.
- New clients, keys, roles, destinations, redirect URIs and administrator accounts were checked for persistence.
- SAP support and internal incident owners have the timeline, impact and evidence needed for further analysis.
What not to assume
- Changing a password revokes every OAuth token in every SAP product.
- One successful revocation call covers all users, clients or token contexts.
- A revoked JWT is rejected immediately when applications validate it offline.
- Deleting a service key removes copies already stored in applications or pipelines.
- BTP, ABAP and Commerce Cloud use interchangeable administration commands.
- A default 12-hour access-token or seven-day refresh-token lifetime is the effective setting for your tenant.
- Logs will remain available until the investigation ends.
