Stop using the LED face mask while your skin is irritated or dry. Keep your routine gentle, pause products that may further irritate your skin, and seek medical advice for hives, inflammation, pain, a rash, or redness after treatment. If the problem does not improve or gets worse after a few days, contact a dermatologist.
Should you keep using the mask if your skin is irritated?
No. Pause the mask until your skin has healed; do not try a shorter session or a different setting while symptoms are active. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises stopping at-home light devices when facial skin is irritated and resuming only after it heals. This is cautious skin-care guidance, not proof that LED light caused a particular episode. The AAD notes that some people develop temporary mild pain or irritated skin from red-light therapy (AAD guidance on red-light therapy; AAD advice for face-mask skin problems).

How to care for irritated or dry skin while it heals
Keep the routine simple
Cleanse gently and avoid scrubbing, exfoliating, or adding new active products to counter the dryness. The AAD advises pausing potentially irritating products—including salicylic-acid acne treatments, anti-aging products, peels, and scrubs—while irritated facial skin heals. It cautions that irritating skin can delay healing.

For raw, irritated areas, the AAD recommends petroleum jelly to protect the skin while it heals. This is supportive skin care; it does not identify or treat the underlying cause. Avoid putting products on the area if they make the discomfort worse.

When to contact a healthcare professional
- Contact a healthcare provider for hives, inflammation, pain, a rash, or redness after LED treatment. Cleveland Clinic lists these as symptoms to discuss with a provider (Cleveland Clinic’s LED light therapy guidance).
- Contact a dermatologist if the problem does not improve after a few days of gentle care or gets worse, as the AAD advises. Do not assume a reaction will clear within a fixed period.
What might be contributing to a reaction?
Symptoms alone cannot establish the cause. Possibilities include a light-sensitivity condition, a medicine or topical product, sensitivity to mask materials, or another cause; a clinician can help assess your situation.
The FDA says photobiomodulation is not recommended for people with photosensitivity disorders, people taking photosensitizing medication, or people with an active infection, wound, or lesion in the treatment area. The AAD also advises talking with a dermatologist before red-light use if you have a condition such as lupus or take medicine that increases light sensitivity (FDA photobiomodulation overview; AAD red-light therapy guidance).
FDA’s MAUDE database contains individual reports, not verified proof of causation or a measure of how often an event occurs. In a 2026 report involving a HIGHERDOSE red and infrared mask, the manufacturer said the cause remained under investigation and listed photosensitivity or silicone allergy as preliminary possibilities (FDA MAUDE report). Another voluntary report records a user’s account of rash, a first-degree burn, and blisters after using a Currentbody mask following tretinoin use; it cannot establish that the mask or tretinoin caused the symptoms, or how often such events happen (FDA MAUDE report).

What to check before considering future use
Wait until your skin has healed, and do not use a universal restart schedule: devices and their instructions differ. Before deciding whether to use the mask again, review its instructions and consult a clinician about any light-sensitivity condition, medication, wound, or lesion relevant to you.
- Choose a device designed for the concern you intend to address, and follow its directions for treatment duration and frequency.
- Use the eye protection specified in the device instructions. Requirements differ, and the FDA notes that light-based procedures can injure eyes.
- FDA clearance indicates that a device is considered low risk; clearance alone does not establish effectiveness.
- If you have a darker skin tone, the AAD says visible red light may increase the risk of hyperpigmentation and recommends discussing home use with a dermatologist.
The AAD says short-term red-light use appears safe overall, but long-term effects are not known and more research is needed. There is no established rate of dryness or irritation specifically from at-home LED face masks in the cited sources.
