Start containment and evidence preservation as soon as compromise is plausible. A suspicious alert is not proof that an attacker gained control, but waiting can let an intruder use stolen credentials, move to other systems, or destroy evidence. Follow your incident-response plan, involve your security team, and use a qualified incident responder for production systems. The practical sequence is: contain access, preserve evidence, secure credentials, determine scope, eradicate persistence, recover from a known-clean state, then harden the environment.
What to do in the first hour
Assign a response lead and begin a written timeline. Record the suspected discovery time, the people involved, systems affected, decisions made, and every control changed. Use a trusted communication channel and, where feasible, an out-of-band channel that the potentially compromised host cannot monitor.

- Contain the host. Remove unnecessary public reachability or restrict the server to the responder, logging, and other access that is strictly required.
- Preserve evidence before cleanup. Capture volatile data and protect logs, snapshots, and provider records that could disappear after shutdown, restart, deletion, or retention expiry.
- Rotate reachable credentials. From a trusted administration device, revoke or replace keys, tokens, passwords, and secrets the host could read or use.
- Scope the incident. Establish the entry point, accounts used, persistence, lateral movement, data access, and any additional hosts or services involved.
- Eradicate and rebuild. Remove persistence, fix the exploited weakness, and restore only from trusted images, backups, or clean installations.
- Reconnect cautiously. Validate identity, network, management-plane, patching, logging, and monitoring controls before returning the workload to service.
These steps are deliberately ordered. Deleting files or rebuilding immediately may remove clues needed to understand what happened, while leaving a reachable system online may allow continued access. The response lead must balance evidence preservation against the risk of ongoing spread.
1. Contain network access without destroying evidence
Cloud GPU instances
Use the cloud platform’s security groups, network access controls, routing rules, or equivalent controls to remove internet exposure and restrict inbound and outbound traffic. Keep only the paths needed for approved responders, centralized logging, and essential containment operations. Contact the infrastructure or GPU service provider through a known-good channel if it controls network isolation, snapshots, hypervisor access, or other parts of the environment.

Do not assume that deleting the instance is the fastest safe answer. Termination can destroy disk state, volatile memory, provider metadata, and short-retention logs. If a snapshot is available, create a point-in-time volume or disk snapshot before changing more than is necessary, and preserve the snapshot under access controls that prevent alteration.
On-premises, colocated, and managed systems
Coordinate isolation with the network, facility, and hosting operators. A switch-port shutdown, firewall rule, router ACL, or dedicated quarantine segment may be preferable to powering off the server when responders need memory and running-process evidence. If disconnection cannot stop active spread, containment takes priority; document why the more destructive action was necessary.
CISA’s ransomware guidance recommends isolating impacted systems and using out-of-band communications, while warning that powering down can destroy volatile-memory evidence. Those principles can apply to a suspected GPU-server compromise even when ransomware has not been established.

Evidence collection should be performed by people who understand the operating system, cloud platform, orchestration layer, and legal or contractual requirements. Do not improvise collection on a production host if doing so could alter the evidence or destabilize the workload.

- Volatile memory, running processes, loaded modules, active sessions, open files, and current network connections.
- Operating-system, authentication, SSH, application, container, scheduler, hypervisor, firewall, and endpoint-security logs.
- Cloud control-plane audit events, volume or disk snapshots, network-flow records, and storage-access history.
- GPU-driver, workload, orchestration, and management-controller events that show unexpected access or configuration changes.
- Indicators such as unfamiliar accounts, new SSH keys, scheduled tasks, services, startup-file changes, unexpected binaries, containers, jobs, or outbound connections.
Record timestamps with the time zone, the collector, the source system, the method used, and the hash or chain-of-custody details required by your organization. Store copies in a location the suspected host cannot modify.
Telemetry differs by provider. NVIDIA’s AI Cloud Partner requirements identify front-end and back-end network telemetry, management and host-network telemetry, VPC ingress and egress flow logs, BMC system-event logs, syslogs, and management logs among the records an NVIDIA Cloud Partner may need to maintain. That framework does not mean every tenant can access every record. Ask the provider what exists, how long it is retained, and how it can be preserved. The framework states that an NCP should preserve relevant logs and forensic evidence for the period required by law or regulation and for no less than 12 months; that is a requirement for that framework, not a universal rule for every GPU deployment.
3. Revoke credentials from a trusted device
Assume that credentials readable or usable from the host may be exposed until evidence shows otherwise. Work from a separate, trusted administration machine, not from the potentially compromised server.
- Cloud IAM users, roles, API keys, temporary credentials, and service accounts.
- SSH private keys, authorized keys, bastion credentials, and administrator passwords.
- CI/CD, source-control, artifact-registry, deployment, and infrastructure-as-code tokens.
- Secrets mounted into containers, environment variables, configuration files, and workload schedulers.
- Credentials for storage, databases, monitoring, backup, support, and management controllers.
Revoke or rotate in an order that preserves containment and investigation. Review each platform’s audit history for use after the suspected intrusion, including use from unfamiliar addresses, times, regions, or workloads. Recreating secrets is safer than copying credentials from a host whose integrity is uncertain.

CISA’s Androxgh0st advisory specifically discusses removing and revoking cloud credentials stored in Laravel .env files and checking associated platforms for unauthorized use. The malware and framework context is specific, but the operational lesson applies whenever a server may have exposed credentials in application files.
4. Establish the entry point and blast radius
Build one timeline from provider, identity, host, firewall, workload, storage, and management records. Classify what is known, what is suspected, and what remains unconfirmed. Possible explanations include exploitation of an exposed service, stolen credentials, unauthorized remote access, malware, resource abuse, or a false positive.
Questions the investigation must answer
- Which public service, account, key, vulnerability, or provider interface supplied initial access?
- Which users, roles, containers, clusters, hosts, storage locations, and network peers were reachable?
- Was persistence added through a service, scheduled task, startup file, SSH key, container image, orchestration object, or management setting?
- Did the actor move laterally, access source code or secrets, stage data, or make outbound connections?
- Were credentials used after the suspected access, and were other resources changed or created?
- Which systems and accounts must be treated as affected even if they show no obvious malware?
Unexpected GPU utilization, unfamiliar jobs, a sudden performance drop, or unusual outbound traffic are useful investigation leads, not proof of compromise. Correlate them with host, identity, workload, and provider evidence before attributing them to an attacker.

5. Check the GPU management plane
GPU servers can have a management controller separate from the operating system and workload network. For NVIDIA DGX H100 and H200 systems, the baseboard management controller (BMC) is a distinct management interface. Review BMC credentials, login records, configuration changes, system-event logs, and routes to the management network when those systems are in scope.

NVIDIA’s DGX H100/H200 guidance says: “NVIDIA recommends that you connect the BMC port in the DGX H100/H200 system to a dedicated management network with firewall protection.” It also says: “If remote access to the BMC is required, such as for a system hosted at a co-location provider, it should be accessed through a secure method that provides isolation from the internet, such as through a VPN server.” These recommendations are specific to the cited DGX systems; do not assume every GPU vendor or model has the same architecture.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Eradicate persistence and recover from a known-clean state
After evidence has been preserved and the scope is understood well enough to act, remove persistence, disable compromised accounts, fix the exploited weakness, and identify other affected hosts and services. Deleting one suspicious binary or running a malware scan is not proof that the system is clean.
- Select a trusted recovery source. Use a backup or image believed to predate compromise, or perform a fresh installation from verified media and repositories.
- Rebuild the software stack. Reinstall the operating system, drivers, GPU libraries, container runtime, orchestration components, and workload artifacts from trusted sources.
- Recreate secrets. Do not carry suspect keys, tokens, passwords, or configuration files into the rebuilt system.
- Patch and correct the entry point. Remove exposed services that are not required, update vulnerable software, and fix insecure configuration.
- Validate before reconnecting. Test identity controls, network restrictions, management-plane segmentation, logging, alerting, backups, and monitoring.
NIST Special Publication 800-61 Revision 3, published in April 2025, identifies restoring clean backups, rebuilding systems, replacing compromised files, patching, and changing passwords as recovery activities. It also notes that hardware replacement can be appropriate when a sophisticated intrusion leaves the full scope uncertain. NIST summarizes the broader objective this way: “Incident response is a critical part of cybersecurity risk management and should be integrated across organizational operations.”
7. Close the exposure before returning to service
- Disable unnecessary public-facing services and ports.
- Restrict administration to trusted networks or a VPN, with MFA and least privilege.
- Separate BMC or other out-of-band management from workload and public networks.
- Patch internet-facing software and establish a repeatable vulnerability-management process.
- Centralize relevant logs with retention long enough for investigations and protect them from host-level tampering.
- Review cloud routes, security groups, ACLs, identity policies, storage permissions, and orchestration settings for drift.
- If a service must remain public, expose only the required function and monitor authentication, process, network, and resource behavior.
CISA emphasizes reducing unnecessary services, patching internet-facing systems, using MFA, and regularly reviewing exposed systems. Apply those controls after recovery, then test that an administrator cannot reach the management interface from an untrusted path and that alerts fire for unexpected identity, network, and workload activity.

Provider coordination, escalation, and notification
Notify the organization’s security incident lead and contact the cloud, GPU-cloud, colocation, or hosting provider promptly. Ask the provider to preserve control-plane, network, storage, BMC, support, and forensic records and to coordinate isolation where it controls the infrastructure. A provider may hold evidence that is unavailable inside the guest operating system.
The NVIDIA AI Cloud Partner framework describes provider duties to handle incidents, preserve relevant logs and forensic evidence, and support joint investigation. For NVIDIA tenants in that framework, it specifies notification no later than 24 hours for high-severity or confirmed compromise and 72 hours for other incidents. Those are framework requirements, not universal legal deadlines and not a promise that every NVIDIA-based cloud deployment follows them.
No single reporting deadline applies to every organization. Legal, regulatory, insurance, customer, and contractual duties depend on jurisdiction, data, and agreements. Route notification decisions through the incident lead and counsel. If internal expertise is limited, engage an incident-response or digital-forensics firm that can preserve evidence and coordinate recovery; do not wait until after rebuilding to seek help.
Quick Recap
Choose actions by hosting model and evidence risk
| Situation | Primary containment control | Main evidence concern | Coordination needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud instance | Security groups, ACLs, routes, and provider isolation | Snapshots, control-plane events, flow logs, and short-retention telemetry | Cloud or GPU provider and the organization’s security lead |
| Managed GPU tenancy | Tenant rules plus provider-enforced quarantine | Provider-held hypervisor, network, storage, and support records | Provider incident team and internal responders |
| Colocated server | Facility switch, firewall, or network quarantine | Memory, BMC records, and logs that may disappear after power changes | Colocation, network, and facility operators |
| Owned on-premises server | Internal firewall, switch ACL, or isolated segment | Volatile state and locally retained logs | Network, infrastructure, security, and legal teams |
Actions that commonly make the incident worse
- Powering off or terminating the server before considering memory and log preservation.
- Continuing normal administration from the suspect host.
- Rotating one password while leaving cloud keys, SSH keys, service tokens, and mounted secrets active.
- Restoring an old image without proving that it predates the compromise.
- Deleting suspicious files before recording their location, timestamps, hashes, and surrounding events.
- Reconnecting the rebuilt server before fixing the original exposure and validating monitoring.
- Assuming a GPU utilization spike or a single alert proves an intrusion.
- Publishing incident details or notifying customers before the incident lead and counsel establish what is known.
