If an Australian crypto exchange freezes a withdrawal, do not send more money to “unlock” it. First work out whether the exchange, your bank, your wallet, the blockchain or a fake platform controls the blockage. Save the evidence, contact the exchange through its official app or website, and make a written complaint requesting the reason, required documents, reference number and decision timeframe.
Then check whether the provider is an Australian financial-services firm that belongs to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA). If its internal complaint process fails and it is an AFCA member, you can escalate for a free, independent review. Suspected fraud should also be reported to Scamwatch and, where appropriate, ReportCyber.

Start by identifying what is actually frozen
“Withdrawal frozen” can describe several different failures. A compliance review at a legitimate exchange is handled differently from a bank block, a pending blockchain transaction or a fake investment website. Record whether the problem affects cryptocurrency, Australian-dollar (AUD) withdrawals, account access, or all three.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Likely blocker | Typical signs | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Exchange account or compliance review | The app shows a security, identity, AML, risk or account-review message; deposits may still work while withdrawals are disabled. | Use the official support channel, ask what triggered the restriction and what documents are required, and request a written review timeframe. |
| Bank or payment provider | The exchange marks the AUD withdrawal as sent or complete, but your bank has not credited it or has blocked the transfer. | Obtain the exchange’s payment reference and ask your bank’s fraud or payments team to trace the transfer. |
| Wallet or address problem | Only one destination address, network or asset fails; the exchange may show an invalid address, unsupported network or travel-rule warning. | Check the asset and network, confirm the destination address, and ask support whether the address is restricted or needs ownership verification. |
| Blockchain transaction | The exchange says the transaction is broadcast, but it remains pending or unconfirmed; a transaction hash may exist. | Check the hash on the relevant public block explorer and ask the exchange whether it is waiting for confirmations, fee replacement or a technical retry. |
| Fake platform or impersonator | Someone demands a tax, release, verification or recovery payment, creates urgency, or claims to be a regulator or recovery agent. | Stop paying, preserve messages and payment records, verify the platform independently, and report the suspected scam. |
A platform can also have more than one issue at once. For example, a genuine account review may coincide with a bank transfer delay. Treat each symptom separately rather than assuming that every failed withdrawal has the same cause.

What to do in the first hour
- Stop additional payments. Do not pay a “withdrawal fee,” tax, security deposit, verification charge or recovery fee to release your own funds. ASIC has warned that scammers often demand more money when a victim tries to withdraw, and may impersonate regulators or other officials.
- Capture the exact error. Take screenshots showing the date, asset, amount, destination, status and wording of every warning. Save the exchange’s email and in-app notices before they disappear.
- Check the official app or typed website address. Do not use a link in an unexpected email, social-media message or chat. Compare the support details shown after signing in through the exchange’s normal app or website.
- Secure access. Change the password for the exchange and the email account attached to it, enable multi-factor authentication, revoke unknown sessions and check whether withdrawal addresses or recovery details were changed.
- Do not delete conversations. Keep chats, emails, bank statements and identity-verification prompts. They may be needed for an internal complaint, AFCA, a bank investigation or a police report.
Preserve evidence before contacting support
Export the account statement and transaction history if the exchange allows it. Keep a chronological record with:
- the account email or customer number (redact passwords and full identity numbers);
- asset, quantity, AUD value and requested withdrawal time;
- destination wallet address, network and transaction hash, if one exists;
- screenshots of balances, errors, status pages and verification requests;
- support-ticket numbers, names or usernames of representatives, and every response;
- bank statements, payment receipts and the account used to fund the exchange;
- messages asking for extra money, threatening account closure or claiming to be ASIC, AFCA or another authority.
Store copies in a location the suspected platform cannot alter. Never send a private key, seed phrase or one-time authentication code to support. A legitimate exchange should not need your wallet’s seed phrase to process a withdrawal.
Make a written complaint to the exchange
Use the exchange’s formal complaints channel, not only a live-chat conversation. Keep the message factual and ask for a reference number. A useful complaint requests five specific answers:

- What rule, event or system decision caused the restriction?
- Is it an account-security, anti-money-laundering (AML), identity, technical, liquidity or payment review?
- Exactly which documents or actions are required from you?
- What is the complaint reference number and the person or team responsible?
- When will the exchange make its next decision or provide an update?
Ask the exchange to distinguish between a temporary hold and a permanent account closure, and to identify which assets or currencies are affected. If it cannot disclose details because of legal or security obligations, request the maximum explanation it is allowed to provide and a practical next step. Keep your tone neutral; threats and unsupported accusations can make communication harder without improving your position.
Understand legitimate reasons for a withdrawal hold
Security and identity checks
An exchange may pause withdrawals after a password reset, new device, changed withdrawal address, unusual login, failed identity check or suspected account takeover. It may require a fresh identity document, a selfie, proof of address or confirmation from the account email. Submit documents only through the authenticated app or a verified support portal, and ask how they will be stored.
AML and fraud monitoring
Australian providers may review transactions for sanctions, fraud, money-laundering or other financial-crime risks. A review can affect one asset, a destination address or the entire account. The fact that a hold is labelled “AML” does not prove wrongdoing, and it does not tell you how long the review will take. Ask for a written timeframe and update schedule; there is no single universal legal deadline for every Australian exchange withdrawal freeze.

Technical, liquidity or operational events
Wallet maintenance, a network upgrade, an unsupported chain, a bank outage or an exchange’s own operational problem can stop withdrawals. Ask whether deposits, internal transfers, crypto withdrawals and AUD withdrawals are separately affected. If the exchange says funds are unavailable because of liquidity or insolvency concerns, obtain legal advice promptly and preserve all account records.

ASIC’s INFO 225 guidance says firms providing financial services to retail clients for covered digital-asset financial products need an ASIC-compliant internal dispute-resolution process and AFCA membership. That requirement does not automatically apply to every overseas platform, token service or product marketed to Australians. Licensing and transition arrangements can change, so verify the provider’s current status and the exact product involved.
AFCA can consider a complaint only when the provider is an AFCA member. Use AFCA’s financial-firm search and keep a copy of the result, including the legal entity name rather than relying only on a trading name. AFCA says consumers should first try to resolve the matter with the provider. Its 1 October 2026 update reported that more than 1,000 complaints related to digital assets had been received over the previous six years and that more digital-asset users now have access to its free service.

AFCA Lead Ombudsman for Investments and Advice Shail Singh said: “We expect better regulation will reduce fraud and security issues, and it also means cryptocurrency platforms will need to have internal dispute resolution processes for their customers, should they have an issue with a product.” Singh also said: “Consumers will also have the right to come to AFCA, as an independent umpire, if they can’t resolve a dispute with a licensed firm.” These statements describe access to a dispute process, not a guarantee that every complaint will succeed or that funds will be reimbursed.
Escalate to AFCA when the internal process fails
- Submit the written complaint to the exchange and allow its stated internal-dispute process to run.
- Keep the complaint reference, dates, responses and any promised decision date.
- If the provider is an AFCA member and does not resolve the issue, lodge a complaint with AFCA. Explain the practical outcome you want, such as a withdrawal decision, correction of an account record or explanation of a fee.
- Attach the relevant evidence in date order. Redact passwords, seed phrases, full card numbers and identity information that is not needed.
- Respond to AFCA requests promptly and tell it if the exchange closes your account, releases some assets or changes its explanation.
AFCA is free and independent, but it is not an instant withdrawal service. Membership does not guarantee reimbursement, and AFCA cannot promise a particular timetable. For a large balance, an insolvency concern or an urgent risk of dissipation, speak with an Australian financial-services lawyer about contracts, preservation of evidence and possible court options.
Recognise scam and impersonation signals
Extra-payment demands are the clearest warning sign. A genuine withdrawal process may involve a disclosed network fee or a documented account charge, but a new request to pay tax, insurance, verification money or a “release” amount before you can access your balance is a classic recovery scam pattern. Do not let a countdown, threat of liquidation or promise of a guaranteed refund override verification.
Best Value
- Someone contacts you first and claims to be from ASIC, AFCA, a police agency or a recovery company.
- The platform’s address, app name or domain is subtly different from the one you originally used.
- Support insists on cryptocurrency, gift cards or a personal bank account for a fee.
- You are told not to contact your bank, police, lawyer or the real exchange.
- A person promises that one final payment will release all funds, then asks for another payment.
Verify every message through the exchange’s official app or website and through the regulator’s published contact details. ASIC cannot order an exchange to release your funds, resolve an individual dispute or recover scam losses. Be especially cautious of anyone offering recovery for an upfront fee.
Report suspected fraud and protect your identity
Report investment or payment scams to Scamwatch. Use ReportCyber for suspected cybercrime, account compromise or malicious websites. Tell your bank’s fraud team immediately if you transferred money or shared banking credentials; ask whether a recall or account-protection action is still possible. Contact the exchange’s fraud team through an official channel, not through the person who solicited the payment.
If identity documents, passwords or email access may have been exposed, contact IDCARE for tailored identity-support guidance. Secure the email account first, then the exchange and banking accounts, because control of email can allow password resets and withdrawal-address changes. Monitor bank transactions, credit activity and new-device alerts.
Choose the remedy that fits the blocker
| Situation | Best next channel | Evidence to provide |
|---|---|---|
| Documented exchange review with no scam signs | Internal written complaint, then AFCA if the provider is a member and the complaint remains unresolved | Error messages, verification requests, complaint reference, account and transaction history |
| AUD transfer missing or rejected by a bank | Exchange payments team and your bank’s fraud or payments team | Bank statement, transfer reference, exchange withdrawal confirmation and dates |
| Pending on-chain transaction | Exchange technical support and, where needed, the receiving wallet provider | Transaction hash, network, address, asset and confirmation status |
| Extra fee, impersonation or fake platform | Bank immediately, Scamwatch, ReportCyber and the exchange’s official fraud team | Payment receipts, wallet addresses, messages, domains, phone numbers and screenshots |
| Identity or account takeover | IDCARE, bank fraud team, exchange security team and ReportCyber where relevant | Login alerts, changed details, identity prompts, suspicious sessions and device information |
| Large loss, threatened insolvency or urgent legal risk | Australian financial-services lawyer; consider a financial counsellor for help organising the loss and creditors | Complete account export, contract or terms, payments, communications and chronology |
Common mistakes that reduce your chances of recovery
- Sending a second payment because the first “release” payment did not work.
- Moving the conversation to an unverified messaging account supplied by a stranger.
- Deleting the account before exporting statements and transaction history.
- Sharing a seed phrase, private key, password or one-time code.
- Assuming that an AFCA complaint automatically freezes deadlines, guarantees compensation or replaces legal advice.
- Waiting while a scammer promises that a withdrawal will be processed “tomorrow.”
What timeframe should you expect?
The sources do not establish one universal deadline for every Australian exchange. Your exchange’s terms, the type of review, the asset, the payment rail and the provider’s regulatory status can all affect timing. Ask for a date in writing, request periodic updates, and record missed commitments. If the provider will not give a timeframe, stops responding, or the amount is significant, obtain tailored legal advice rather than relying on an assumed deadline.
A clear paper trail is the most useful protection: one chronology, one evidence folder and one written request that identifies the blocked asset, amount, date, requested remedy and next decision date. Keep reporting and complaint channels separate so that a scam report does not replace an internal complaint, and an internal complaint does not delay urgent bank or identity-protection action.
