What to Do If an ATM Gives You Less Cash Than Your Receipt Shows

Contact the bank or credit union that issued your card as soon as possible and report that the ATM dispensed less cash than the transaction shows. State exactly how much you requested, how much you received, and how much was charged. If another company owns the ATM, notify it too—but keep the card issuer involved.

What to do, step by step

  1. Write down what happened

Record the date and time, ATM location and machine ID if visible, amount requested, amount charged, and amount actually received. Note the denominations you received and any transaction reference number. These details can help the bank identify the withdrawal; its exact claim form may vary. 2. Report the error to your card issuer

Call the bank or credit union that issued your card, or use its designated error-reporting channel. Say that the ATM dispensed an incorrect amount and that you want to report a transaction error. Ask for a case number, how to submit supporting information, and whether you must confirm an oral report in writing. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau advises customers to call their bank or credit union immediately. CFPB ATM guidance.

  3. Contact the ATM owner if it is different

Use the contact details posted on the machine or printed on the receipt, if available. Tell the owner what happened, but do not treat that report as a substitute for notifying your card issuer. CFPB guidance recommends contacting the ATM owner as well when it is not your bank or credit union; the FDIC also advises keeping a record of the conversation.

  4. Keep your evidence and complaint record

Save the ATM receipt, if you have one, and a screenshot or statement showing the debit. Keep notes of calls, including dates, names, and case numbers. Written follow-up can help document what you reported. FDIC consumer guidance.

  5. Monitor the account and follow up

Check whether the bank reverses or refunds the disputed amount. If it does not, follow the issuer’s complaint process and the relevant regulator or ombudsman route for your country. Deadlines and escalation channels differ, so use the rules that apply where your account is held.

If you did not get a receipt

Report the short dispense anyway. Use your account transaction history and the notes you made about the time, location, machine, and cash received. In the United States, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency says federal law requires banks it regulates to make an ATM withdrawal receipt available at the time of withdrawal, upon request, for withdrawals of $15 or more. That receipt rule does not mean you should delay reporting if you lack a receipt. OCC ATM guidance.

Deadlines and procedures depend on where you bank

United States

Under Regulation E, receiving an incorrect amount from an electronic terminal counts as an error. Generally, you must notify your financial institution no later than 60 days after it sends the first periodic statement showing the error. The institution generally has 10 business days to investigate and determine whether an error occurred. If it needs more time, it may generally take up to 45 days if it provisionally credits the disputed amount within 10 business days. Exceptions and procedural details apply, including possible written confirmation after oral notice; use the institution’s designated error-reporting address or number and do not wait until the deadline. Regulation E.

The CFPB’s practical advice is shorter: “If the ATM gave you the wrong amount of money, you should immediately call your bank or credit union.” CFPB.

India

The Reserve Bank of India’s ATM and white-label ATM FAQ says a bank must re-credit a failed debited ATM transaction within a maximum of T+5 calendar days, where T is the transaction day. For delays beyond five calendar days, it specifies compensation of Rs. 100 per day. Customers may raise the issue with their bank and may approach the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme if dissatisfied with the response or if the bank does not respond within 30 days. These are India-specific provisions, not a worldwide deadline. RBI FAQ.

Other countries and institution-specific processes

Follow your card issuer’s process and the rules in your jurisdiction. For example, Permanent TSB tells its customers to wait 15 calendar days before raising a dispute and sets a 120-calendar-day filing limit; those steps are specific to PTSB. Emirates NBD’s UAE process requests transaction identifiers and other details and gives different investigation estimates for local and international claims. Do not assume either bank’s process applies to another issuer. Permanent TSB process; Emirates NBD process.

What to say when you report it

A clear description helps the bank understand the discrepancy. You can say: “I requested [amount] at the ATM at [location] on [date and time]. The transaction shows a debit of [amount charged], but I received only [amount received]. Please record this as an ATM cash-dispense error and tell me how to submit any required confirmation.”

Give the machine ID or transaction reference if you have it, and ask for the case number and next steps. Keep the amounts exact; do not estimate if you can check your receipt or account record.
