Keep your routine simple while your skin is irritated: cleanse gently, skip exfoliants and other potentially irritating products, and use a fragrance-free cream moisturizer if you can tolerate it. If the serum was prescribed, contact the prescriber before changing how you use it.
What to do right away
- Stop the suspected nonprescription serum. If it stings, burns, or causes a reaction, wash it off gently and do not apply it again for now. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises stopping products that sting, burn, or tingle. AAD guidance on anti-aging products
- Pause other potentially irritating products. Avoid exfoliating acids, scrubs, and other products that could further irritate dry or peeling skin. Do not pick or scrub flakes away; exfoliation can make dry, peeling skin worse. AAD dry-skin guidance
- Use a simple routine. Wash gently with a fragrance-free cleanser and apply a fragrance-free cream moisturizer if it does not sting or worsen the reaction. AAD recommends cream or ointment for very dry skin; these are more hydrating than thinner lotions or gels. AAD moisturizer guidance
Could the serum be causing irritation or an allergy?
Retinol and other retinoids can irritate skin, especially if used too often or alongside drying products. Skincare ingredients can also cause allergic contact dermatitis. Redness, dryness, or peeling alone cannot tell you which is happening, and the ingredient responsible may be difficult to identify. A dermatologist can assess the rash and may use patch testing when appropriate. AAD guidance on retinoids and retinol and AAD guidance on contact dermatitis

When the serum is prescription-strength
Contact the prescribing clinician if you are unsure whether a reaction is expected or what to do next. Do not assume advice for an over-the-counter serum applies to your prescription or change a prescribed treatment without individualized guidance.

The FDA’s 2026 prescribing information for RETIN-A MICRO, a specific prescription tretinoin product, lists possible local effects including excessive dryness, redness, swelling, peeling, itching, blistering, burning, or stinging. Its label advises gentle washing, avoiding overuse and irritating products used alongside it, and using moisturizer; severe local irritation may warrant temporarily or permanently discontinuing that medicine. Those directions are specific to RETIN-A MICRO, not every prescription retinoid or serum. FDA RETIN-A MICRO Prescribing Information (2026)

When to get medical advice
Contact a dermatologist or, for a prescribed product, its prescriber if symptoms are severe, worsening, persistent, painful, cracked, bleeding, or very irritating. Get help if the rash is difficult to identify or you are uncertain whether a prescription-product reaction is expected. A dermatologist can help investigate a possible ingredient trigger and discuss whether patch testing is appropriate. AAD guidance on testing skin-care products
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to reduce the chance of a reaction if you try a new product later
Wait until the current irritation has settled before considering another product, and ask a clinician for advice if symptoms persist or you are unsure what triggered them. For a new skin-care product, AAD suggests testing it on a small spot twice daily for seven to 10 days before broader use if no reaction occurs. This is a screening step, not a guarantee that the product will remain tolerable. Retinol and glycolic acid can cause temporary irritation, particularly on sensitive skin.
