If no update is offered, it may not have reached your model and carrier yet. Motorola’s Windows-based Software Fix Rescue tool is a later option, but it factory-resets the phone and erases personal data, so back up before using it.
Retry the update safely from your phone
- Note your device details. Record the exact model, carrier, current Android version or build, and any error message. Update availability and menus can vary by model and carrier.
- Open System Updates. Motorola’s general path is Settings > (System > Advanced) > System updates > Check for updates. Labels may differ; use the update screen available on your phone. If an update appears, follow the onscreen instructions. Motorola’s update guidance describes the general route and notes that menus can vary.
- Use Wi-Fi and have enough battery. Motorola recommends Wi-Fi because downloads can be large, and its user guide says the phone needs enough charge to complete the update. Motorola does not specify a universal battery percentage. Motorola’s user guide covers update preparation.
If the update fails again, keep the exact error wording and device details for support. The available Motorola guidance does not give error-code-specific repair steps, so avoid guessing at a fix based on an error you cannot match to official instructions.

If no update appears, check whether it has reached your phone
A missing update does not by itself mean the phone is broken. Motorola says Android releases take time to test across models, regions, and distribution channels, and carrier or partner certifications can affect release timing. Dates can differ even for users in the same region. Check the update information for your exact model and carrier rather than repeatedly trying to force an installation. Choose between another OTA attempt and Rescue
An over-the-air (OTA) update is installed through the phone’s update screen. Motorola describes OTA updates as applying specific parts of the phone software; its Software Fix Rescue option runs a full software update. The practical trade-offs are equipment and data risk:

Use Motorola Rescue only after preparing for a reset
Motorola’s Software Fix is a PC client that connects to the phone over USB and can run a software update. Rescue updates Android to the current version and resets the device to factory defaults; downloaded apps, photos, text messages, and other personal data will be removed. Motorola’s Rescue information explains the full-update process and its reset consequence.

- Back up anything you want to keep before starting.
- Make sure you can sign in with the Google account that was on the phone before Rescue. Motorola says that same account must be used during initial setup afterward.
- Have access to a Windows PC, an internet connection, and a USB cable that fits the phone and supports data transfer.
Motorola’s Software Fix page describes connecting a phone by USB to run an update and access other functions. Follow the current instructions shown by Motorola’s PC client for your specific device.
When to contact Motorola or your carrier
If Rescue is unavailable for your device, fails to complete, or does not resolve the problem, contact Motorola support or your carrier with the model, carrier, Android version or build, and error wording. Motorola cautions that some problems require hardware repair rather than a software update. Motorola’s troubleshooting guidance notes that a full software update may address an OTA failure but will not resolve every issue.
