A missed alert for an EICAR-style test file does not prove that your Android phone is infected, nor does it automatically show that the security app has failed. EICAR is a harmless, deliberately recognizable pattern used to exercise antivirus responses. A miss can result from an unsupported file form, the wrong scan stage, an outdated app, or a product that does not claim to detect EICAR on Android.
Verify the exact test, check Google Play Protect, update the security app, repeat only the documented harmless procedure, and then ask the vendor whether that test is supported on your Android version. Never download real malware to “prove” that protection works.

Why an Android antivirus may miss the EICAR test
EICAR is a standardized antivirus test artifact created by EICAR and CARO so people can check scanner behavior without handling a live virus. The documented pattern is 68 characters long. It can be supplied as a plain test file, a renamed text file, or a ZIP archive. Those forms are related, but they do not necessarily pass through the same protection layer.

A product can support EICAR in one path and not another. For example, desktop documentation from Avira separates web protection, real-time protection, on-demand scans, and archive extraction. That illustrates why the stage matters; it does not establish how Avira or any other vendor’s Android app behaves.

Consequently, “the app did not detect my file” is incomplete information. You need the app name and version, Android version, exact test source, file format, and action that was performed before a vendor can determine whether the result is expected.
What EICAR proves—and what it cannot prove
A positive result
An alert shows that a particular configured detection path recognized the known EICAR pattern. Depending on the product, the response may be a warning, download block, quarantine, deletion, or a message in scan history.
A negative result
A negative result can mean that the product does not support EICAR, does not support that specific variant, watches a different stage, or never scanned the item. It is not a diagnosis of infection and is not proof that every protection feature is ineffective.
Not a malware-efficacy certification
EICAR describes its file as a safe way to test antivirus response, not as a representative sample of Android malware. Passing the test does not demonstrate detection of current threats, while failing it does not quantify a miss rate. No authoritative Android-specific EICAR detection-rate figure establishes a universal pass or fail standard for security apps.
First identify exactly what you tested
Before changing settings, establish which artifact you used. Online pages often call many unrelated downloads a “test virus,” and their behavior can be undocumented.

- Official EICAR file: The defined 68-character pattern, supplied in the plain or renamed forms documented by EICAR.
- Archive variant: A ZIP containing the pattern. Archive inspection differs among scanners; some inspect inside archives only during a manual scan or extraction.
- Vendor test app: For example, the Google Play listing for F-Secure AV Test describes a harmless Android app based on EICAR and says antivirus software should detect it. That listing is one vendor’s test description, not an Android-wide requirement, and its availability or status may change.
- Unverified “test malware”: Do not install it. A file advertised as a test without a verifiable specification may be an actual harmful sample.
Keep the original download location, file name, extension, and any instructions. Do not rename, extract, or open the item in ways the product’s documentation does not describe; those actions can change which scanner sees it.
Check the security app’s documented support
Open the app’s help pages or support screen and look for three separate statements:
- Whether the Android edition supports EICAR at all.
- Which form is supported: an installed test app, standalone file, renamed text file, archive, download, or another input.
- Which event should trigger detection: download, installation, real-time access, manual scan, or archive extraction.
Do not transfer expectations from a desktop product to its Android app. Mobile operating systems restrict file access and app installation differently, and a vendor may intentionally omit a desktop scanning layer on Android. If the documentation does not mention EICAR, treat the result as unknown rather than assuming the app promised detection.
Verify Google Play Protect is active
Google Play Protect is a separate Android protection layer, not merely another screen inside a third-party antivirus app. Google says it checks apps from Google Play before download, examines apps obtained from other sources, and periodically scans the device. Depending on what it identifies, it can notify you, disable an app, or remove it.
To check its main setting:
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Select Play Protect.
- Tap the gear icon or Settings.
- Confirm that Scan apps with Play Protect is turned on.
Return to the Play Protect page and review the displayed security status and recent scan information. Google says scanning occurs when apps are installed and periodically afterward. Device scans cover apps regardless of their download source, but that does not mean Play Protect must flag every harmless antivirus test file.

Safe troubleshooting sequence
1. Stop using untrusted samples
Delete any file whose origin or contents you cannot verify. Do not disable Play Protect, sideload a real malware sample, or weaken Android’s installation safeguards to force an alert. A live sample can steal accounts, encrypt data, or spread to other devices.
2. Record the environment
Write down the phone model, Android version and security patch level, security-app name and version, test source, exact file name and extension, and whether the item was downloaded, opened, installed, extracted, or scanned manually. This information prevents support from guessing which path you exercised.
3. Update through an official channel
Install available updates for the security app and Google Play services through their normal store or system update mechanisms. Restart the phone if the vendor’s instructions request it, then confirm that real-time or web protection is enabled. Do not install a modified APK offered by a forum or file-hosting site.
4. Repeat the documented harmless test
Use only the exact EICAR form or vendor test app that the product says it supports. Follow the sequence precisely, including whether the file must be downloaded, saved, opened, or submitted to an on-demand scan. Note the time, notification text, and scan-history entry. If the instructions specify a manual scan, a passive download alone is not a valid test.
5. Check for a response in more than one place
Some apps show a notification and also record an event in quarantine or scan history. Android may display a system notification separately from the security app. Check both, but do not restore or run a quarantined test file simply to inspect it.

6. Contact the vendor when the miss is reproducible
Send the vendor the environment record, screenshots of settings and scan history, the test’s source and format, and the exact steps. Ask four direct questions: Is this EICAR form supported on Android? Which detection stage should respond? Is the current app version compatible with this Android release? Is the observed result expected or a defect? EICAR’s own documentation directs users to their antivirus vendor for scanner-specific help.

EICAR’s documentation says detection of at least the eicar.com form is expected for scanners that support EICAR, while ZIP handling can vary. That qualification is important: a product that does not detect an archive is not necessarily failing the plain-file test it actually documents.
Built-in and third-party protection are different layers
When you compare Play Protect with a third-party security app, compare documented capabilities rather than assuming one replaces the other.

There is no sound basis for ranking products from a single EICAR outcome. Independent, current Android testing would be needed to compare detection performance, and a harmless test file alone cannot supply that comparison.

When a specific app—not the test file—is suspicious
If your concern is an unfamiliar application rather than an EICAR artifact, handle the application directly. Open Play Protect, review its scan result, and follow any warning or removal prompt. Google says Play Protect can notify, disable, or remove apps it identifies as potentially harmful.
Also review Android’s installed-app list, recently granted permissions, battery and data usage, and accessibility or device-administrator privileges. Remove an app you do not recognize or no longer need, especially if it requests capabilities unrelated to its purpose. Change important passwords from a separate trusted device if you entered them into a suspicious app, and contact your bank or other affected service when financial information may have been exposed.
Common mistakes that create a false alarm
- Testing the wrong object: A screenshot, web page, or renamed download is not necessarily the defined EICAR pattern.
- Expecting instant detection: A manual-scan product may not inspect a file merely because it exists on storage.
- Assuming ZIP support: Archive inspection is a separate capability and can vary by implementation.
- Using desktop instructions on mobile: The same brand can expose different scanners and permissions on Android.
- Ignoring version changes: Android updates, app updates, and policy changes can alter supported paths.
- Disabling safeguards: Turning off Play Protect or installing unknown samples introduces genuine risk while attempting to test a harmless one.
What information support needs
A useful support ticket is reproducible and specific. Include:
- Phone manufacturer and model, Android version, and security patch date.
- Security-app name, version, subscription or edition if relevant, and enabled protection modules.
- Google Play Protect status and the date of its last displayed scan.
- The test source, exact file or app name, file extension, archive status, and download location.
- Every action in order, including whether the item was downloaded, opened, extracted, installed, or manually scanned.
- Notification text, scan-history entries, screenshots, and the time zone of the test.
Do not attach a live malware sample. For an EICAR test, identify the official form you used and follow the vendor’s secure upload instructions if support requests additional material.

Treat the result as a compatibility and workflow question, not as an infection diagnosis. Confirm that you used the defined EICAR artifact or a vendor-supported Android test, verify Play Protect’s “Scan apps with Play Protect” setting, update the security app, and repeat the documented procedure. If the same supported test still produces no expected response, give the vendor the full environment and steps so it can confirm a limitation or investigate a defect. The safe test tells you about one detection path; it cannot certify—or disqualify—an Android security product by itself.
