If an Amazon.com sale item arrives broken, defective, or materially different from its listing, start in Your Orders and use the return or replacement option shown for that order. A “final sale” or nonreturnable label does not automatically end the matter: Amazon directs customers to contact Customer Service when such an item arrives damaged, defective, or materially different from what was ordered.
What to do first
- Document the problem. Before repacking, take clear photos of the damage or of the difference between the item and its listing. Keep the order details and any messages about the return; Amazon may request photos when reviewing a replacement.
- Open the order in Amazon. Go to Your Orders, select the affected order, and choose the return or replacement option available. Describe the issue accurately, then follow the instructions shown for that item, including the approved return method, label, and packaging directions.
- Keep proof of the return. Use the label and shipping method provided, and save tracking information or drop-off proof until the refund or replacement is resolved. In specified third-party seller cases, missing tracking can affect A-to-z Guarantee coverage; Amazon also warns that refusing delivery may affect coverage.
Does “final sale” mean you cannot get help?
No. Amazon’s current Return Policy says most eligible items can be returned for a refund or replacement within 30 days of delivery if they are in original or unused condition, but eligibility and terms vary. It also says that if a nonreturnable or Final Sale item arrives damaged, defective, or materially different from what was ordered, contact Customer Service. Use the order-specific option or contact Amazon directly rather than treating the sale label as the final answer.

For an eligible replacement, Amazon directs customers to select “Return or replace items” in Your Orders, choose a reason, add details, and follow the on-screen instructions. Depending on the case, the replacement may ship only after Amazon receives the original item. Check the product page before purchase and the order record afterward for the applicable terms.
What changes when a third-party seller sold the item?
Use Amazon’s Online Returns Center to submit the return request and give the seller the response opportunity specified for the transaction. Keep communication and shipment records. If the seller does not provide an approved return method or the expected refund, check the live A-to-z Guarantee requirements and the deadline shown for your order before escalating.

A-to-z coverage is conditional, not an automatic refund guarantee. Amazon distinguishes among delivery problems, damaged or not-as-described goods, unauthorized returns, and refunds that have not arrived after a compliant return. The applicable steps and claim window depend on the circumstances; review the order and current policy rather than relying on a single universal deadline. Amazon’s seller-return guidance identifies 48 hours as a key response interval in specified escalation cases, not a general waiting period for every return.
How to check refund timing and return terms
Amazon’s general refund guidance says processing can take up to 30 days, depending on the order, transit, processing, and payment method. For third-party seller returns, Amazon says sellers usually process refunds within two business days after receiving the returned item, although delays can occur. Check Your Returns for the order’s status.

Before sending an item back, review the terms shown for the specific return: who sold and fulfilled it, whether Amazon offers a refund, replacement, or return-and-reorder route, the deadline and shipping method, and any return-shipping charge or fee disclosed. The Federal Trade Commission notes that sale-item return policies can differ and advises shoppers to check return shipping, deadlines, and restocking fees. Its separate rule that sellers generally must ship within 30 days when no shipping time was promised concerns delivery—not a buyer’s return deadline.
Watch for refund-text scams
If a text unexpectedly promises an Amazon refund and asks you to click a link, do not use the link. Open the Amazon app or type Amazon’s website address yourself and inspect the order there. The FTC warns that unexpected refund messages can be phishing attempts.
