Stop and identify the country of the sending wallet before entering any USSD code. Airtel Money reversal menus and support numbers differ by market. Save the confirmation SMS, receipt or transaction ID, amount, date and both phone numbers, then use the official route for that country. Do not send a second payment while the first one is still unclear.
A reversal is not guaranteed. Recovery may depend on whether the unintended recipient has withdrawn or spent the money, and Airtel’s terms in some markets leave the decision to Airtel. The procedures below are documented for Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania; another Airtel market may use a different process.

What to do immediately
- Stop further transfers. Do not retry, resend or “balance” the payment until the original status is confirmed.
- Keep the transaction message. Do not delete the SMS showing the amount, recipient, date, status and reference. In Kenya, a successful transfer SMS includes a unique receipt number that Airtel uses to identify and track the transaction.
- Write down the facts. Record the sender’s number, the number you entered, the intended number, amount, date and approximate time.
- Check the sending wallet’s history if your Airtel Money menu or app provides it. A message saying “pending” is not proof that the recipient has received funds.
- Use only an official local Airtel channel. The country-specific options are set out below. If a menu item is missing, stop and ask Airtel to confirm the current procedure rather than guessing.
If the transfer is still pending
The official material reviewed for these markets does not specify a universal resolution time, waiting period or retry interval for a pending Airtel Money transaction. A pending entry can therefore not be assigned a reliable “wait 30 minutes” or “try again tomorrow” rule.

Check the transaction evidence
Read the latest SMS carefully and compare it with the account history, if available. Keep the receipt or transaction ID exactly as shown. In Kenya, Airtel’s terms say an unsuccessful transaction is reported by SMS with a reason, while a successful transfer has a unique receipt number. Those provisions support checking the message and preserving its reference; they do not promise that every pending transaction will clear within a particular number of minutes or hours.

Contact support when the status is unclear
Give the agent the receipt number, amount, sender number, recipient number and time. Ask the agent to confirm whether the transaction is pending, completed, failed or reversed. Until Airtel confirms the state, do not make another payment to the same recipient: you could create a duplicate debit if the first transfer later completes.
Do not assume an automatic reversal
A pending transaction may eventually fail, but none of the cited official sources guarantees an automatic refund or gives a common escalation deadline. Follow the local support route and retain every reference number from the conversation.
Country-specific reversal options
The following table keeps the procedures separate. A helpline listed for one service or country is not a universal Airtel Money number.

Kenya: reverse a domestic transfer
Airtel Kenya’s getting-started instructions say to dial *334#, choose My Account, then select Reverse transaction. The same page says to call 100 for assistance. Follow the prompts for the transaction you want to reverse and retain any new confirmation message.
For a domestic transfer, the receipt number in the successful-transfer SMS is the key tracking reference. If the transaction failed, the SMS should state a reason. Give that information to customer care rather than attempting multiple reversals.
Kenya international transfers are a different case
A separate Airtel Kenya FAQ covering an international transfer service instructs the sender to call 1522. The agent should receive the amount sent, the sender’s number, the wrong number and the correct number. Airtel says it will retrieve the money from the wrong recipient only if that recipient has not yet withdrawn it, return the funds to the sender, and require the sender to make a new transfer to the intended customer. This instruction is limited to the transfer service described by that FAQ; it does not replace the domestic 100 route for every Kenya transaction.

Uganda: understand the reversal limit before claiming
Airtel Money Uganda’s terms place responsibility on the customer to check the amount, recipient nickname, phone number and other details before confirming. They state: A Transaction once completed is final and irrevocable, and AMC Uganda shall not be under any compulsion to reverse any Transaction.
This is the general rule, not a promise that a mistaken payment can be cancelled.
The discretionary exception
The same terms allow AMC Uganda, at its discretion, to cancel or reverse a transaction for reasonable grounds such as manifest error or fraud when the recipient has not redeemed the e-money and the claim is made within one month of the erroneous transfer. The one-month period applies to that specific exception. It is not a general pending-transaction deadline and does not guarantee approval.
If the recipient has already redeemed or spent the money, the terms say Airtel is not compelled to compensate the sender. Contact Airtel as soon as you discover the mistake, explain the error or suspected fraud, and provide the transaction details. The reviewed terms list 100 as the Airtel Money helpline and +256200202003 as a contact number.

Tanzania: use the reversal menu, but verify an older guide
Airtel Tanzania’s customer guide describes this self-service sequence: dial *150*60#, select My Account, choose My Transaction Reversals, and then Initiate Reversal. Enter or select the transaction requested by the menu and wait for the confirmation message.
The guide also lists Approve Pending Reversal for a customer who received money by mistake. That option is for the recipient’s approval, not a way for a sender to force a reversal.
Because the guide was published several years before this article, menu names or availability may have changed. If My Transaction Reversals or Initiate Reversal is not displayed, stop and confirm the current route with Airtel Tanzania customer care. Do not substitute a code from Kenya or Uganda.
What Airtel support will need
Prepare one concise description before calling or submitting a request. Include:
- the Airtel Money sender number;
- the number you entered and the intended recipient’s number;
- the amount and currency;
- the date and approximate time;
- the SMS receipt, transaction ID or reference number;
- the exact status wording, such as pending, failed or completed; and
- what you are requesting: status confirmation, reversal or investigation.
Never alter the SMS or round the amount when quoting it. If support gives you a case number, save it with the original receipt.
When recovery may not be possible
Airtel cannot necessarily retrieve funds that have already been withdrawn, redeemed or spent by the unintended recipient. Kenya’s international-transfer FAQ expressly conditions retrieval on the money not having been withdrawn. Uganda’s terms similarly limit the discretionary error or fraud exception to e-money that has not been redeemed and state that Airtel is not compelled to compensate the sender after redemption or spending.

A pending transaction has not been confirmed as completed, so ask support to establish its state before treating it as a completed wrong-number payment.
Protect yourself from reversal scams
A caller may claim to be arranging a refund and ask for your security details. Airtel Kenya says customer care will call only from 0733100000 and will not ask for your Airtel Money PIN or one-time password (OTP). Do not disclose either to a caller, text sender or social-media account. End the conversation and call the published local Airtel number yourself.
- Do not enter a USSD code dictated by an unsolicited caller unless you have independently verified the number and purpose.
- Do not share an OTP, PIN, card details or full security answers to “approve” a reversal.
- Do not install a remote-control app or hand your phone to someone who says it is required for recovery.
- Keep screenshots and call details if you suspect an impersonation attempt, and report it through the official channel.
A simple decision guide
- Status says pending: preserve the SMS and reference, check history, and contact the local Airtel route for confirmation. Do not resend.
- Status says failed or unsuccessful: read the stated reason and ask support whether the debit was released before attempting a new payment.
- Status says completed, recipient is wrong: start the country-specific reversal process immediately. Success may depend on the recipient’s funds remaining unredeemed.
- You are the unintended recipient: do not spend the money. In Tanzania, the guide lists Approve Pending Reversal; in other markets, follow the instruction from Airtel support.
The safest sequence is therefore consistent even though the menus are not: identify the wallet’s country, preserve the transaction evidence, use only that market’s official route, and wait for a confirmed status before sending anything else.
