Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf an AI tool has exposed personal or business information, act in this order: stop further access, preserve evidence, determine exactly what was visible and to whom, secure any compromised accounts or keys, then decide whether notifications are required in the jurisdictions involved. Do not wait for a perfect incident report before disabling a public link or pausing an unsafe integration. At the same time, avoid destroying logs or other evidence that may show what happened.
Start with containment, not speculation
“Exposure” can describe several different events: you may have pasted confidential material into a consumer chatbot, an AI service may have made a conversation or file publicly reachable, an integration may have granted too much access, or an account may have been taken over. The first safe actions are similar, but the investigation and notification duties differ. Treat a credible suspicion as an incident until you establish otherwise.

Stop the sharing path
- Disable public access. Turn off a public conversation link, revoke a shared file URL, remove an exposed output, or change a workspace item from public to restricted. If the tool has a “share,” “publish,” “anyone with the link,” or guest-access setting, check each affected item rather than assuming one switch covers all of them.
- Pause the affected integration. Disconnect a plug-in, workflow, browser extension, API connection, or cloud-storage connector that may continue sending data. If stopping it would interrupt safety-critical operations, restrict its permissions first and coordinate the change with your security lead.
- Ask the provider to contain the incident. Use the service’s official security or support channel. Give the provider the account or workspace identifier, affected links, approximate discovery time, and the action you have already taken. Request confirmation of whether the content remains accessible, whether it was indexed or logged, and what preservation or deletion options exist.
- Remove improperly posted information from the web. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises businesses to remove exposed information and check whether other sites saved copies. A deleted page can remain in search caches, archives, screenshots, downloads, or reposts, so search for distinctive phrases, filenames, and URLs after the original is removed. Containment, assessment, and notification may happen simultaneously or in quick succession; the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) describes containment as the first of four connected response steps. OAIC response guidance

Create an incident record
Open a restricted incident document or ticket and record facts as they become known. Include:
- The date and time the exposure was discovered, and the time zone.
- The AI service, product tier, workspace, account, model feature, integration, or API endpoint involved.
- Conversation URLs, file names, public links, screenshots, export files, error messages, and provider case numbers.
- What data was involved, who owned it, and the period during which it may have been accessible.
- Who could access it: a named recipient, workspace members, anyone with a link, search users, or an unknown audience.
- Every containment action, with its time and the person who performed it.
- Provider statements, internal logs, access records, and correspondence.
Preserve original files and screenshots in a controlled location, retain relevant authentication and API logs, and note any uncertainty instead of filling gaps with assumptions. Keep a timeline separate from opinions so investigators and counsel can distinguish confirmed facts from working hypotheses.

| Event type | Typical sign | Immediate focus |
|---|---|---|
| Accidental sharing by a user | A person pasted or uploaded information to the wrong conversation, workspace, recipient, or public link. | Remove or restrict the item, identify recipients and copies, and review the user’s sharing and training controls. |
| Account or credential compromise | Unknown sign-ins, changed settings, unfamiliar API calls, or a stolen password, session, or key. | Revoke sessions and keys, reset credentials, inspect access logs, and investigate actions taken by the intruder. |
| Provider or integration incident | The service reports unauthorized access, a bug, a misconfigured tenant boundary, or an exposed connector. | Obtain the provider’s incident scope and timeline, preserve its notices, and coordinate controller/processor responsibilities. |
| Downstream copy or repost | The original item is gone but search results, caches, screenshots, exports, or third-party sites still contain it. | Locate copies, submit removal requests where available, and monitor for continued distribution. |
One incident can fit more than one row. For example, a stolen API key may have been used to retrieve files that a user had already placed in an AI-connected storage system.
Assess the data, audience, and likely harm
Make a documented assessment of both scope and consequences. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) says potential adverse consequences must be considered case by case, including seriousness and likelihood. A customer database that could enable identity fraud is materially different from a staff telephone list that would not normally create the same risk. UK ICO personal-data-breach guide
Questions that establish scope
- What categories? Names, contact details, credentials, government identifiers, financial information, health data, legal documents, source code, trade secrets, customer records, or merely low-sensitivity text.
- How much? Estimate the number of records, files, conversations, tokens, or organizations, and identify whether data was complete or only partially visible.
- Whose data? Separate your information from information about customers, employees, children, patients, clients, suppliers, or other third parties.
- Who could access it? Determine whether access was limited to one recipient, a private workspace, a link holder, the public internet, or an unknown set of users.
- For how long? Establish the earliest known exposure and the time access was disabled. Check whether indexing, caching, downloads, or exports extended the practical window.
- Was it actually accessed or copied? Review provider, identity, web, and API logs. Lack of evidence of access is not proof that no one viewed or copied the material.
- What could happen next? Consider fraud, account takeover, harassment, discrimination, physical safety risks, competitive harm, confidentiality loss, regulatory exposure, or contractual claims.
Use a conservative range when the exact number is unknown, label estimates clearly, and update the record as the provider supplies evidence. A public URL that was reachable for minutes may still require attention if search engines or automated services captured it; conversely, a restricted item with no evidence of access may present lower risk. The decision should reflect both likelihood and severity, not visibility alone.

Secure accounts, sessions, and API keys
If an account, password, session token, or API key may have been exposed, follow the provider’s official security process immediately. Current account guidance from OpenAI recommends contacting support promptly, changing an exposed or reused password, reviewing security history, logging out of active sessions, and rotating API keys. Account-security guidance
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Sign in through the provider’s known, official site rather than a link in an incident email.
- Change the password to a unique value that has not been used elsewhere. If single sign-on is used, secure the identity-provider account and review its sessions.
- Terminate active sessions and remove unfamiliar devices, applications, browser extensions, or OAuth grants.
- Revoke and replace every potentially exposed API key, webhook secret, service-account credential, and access token. Update dependent applications with the new secret and disable the old one.
- Review billing, usage, model calls, file access, administrative changes, and security logs for activity you do not recognize.
- Enable multifactor authentication where the service supports it, preferably with a phishing-resistant method for administrator and developer accounts.
These measures reduce continuing misuse; they cannot retract information already seen, downloaded, copied, or memorized by another person or system. Do not send passwords, full API keys, or sensitive files through ordinary support email while reporting the incident.
Decide whether anyone must be notified
Notification is a legal and factual determination, not an automatic consequence of every AI mishap. Identify the countries and states involved, your role (such as controller, processor, employer, or service provider), the people affected, the data categories, the likelihood and severity of harm, and any contractual deadlines. For a business incident, involve the designated security, privacy, legal, communications, and incident-response leads. The FTC suggests using forensic investigators to establish source and scope and privacy or data-security counsel to advise on applicable laws. FTC business guidance

How the EU GDPR rule fits
Under the EU General Data Protection Regulation overview, a controller must notify the relevant supervisory authority without undue delay and, where feasible, within 72 hours of becoming aware of a personal-data breach when it is likely to pose a risk to individuals. Affected people must be informed when the breach is likely to result in a high risk, subject to the regulation’s exceptions. A processor must notify the controller without undue delay. European Commission GDPR obligations overview GDPR text
The 72-hour period is an EU-specific rule with a risk threshold, not a worldwide deadline for every AI exposure. Other jurisdictions may use different triggers, recipients, content requirements, or time limits. If you cannot yet determine whether notification is required, preserve the discovery time, escalate to counsel promptly, and continue the assessment rather than waiting passively.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Prepare a notification that helps people
When notification is required or prudent, explain what happened in plain language, when it occurred and was discovered, what information was involved, what has been done to contain it, what affected people can do now, and how to obtain reliable assistance. Do not speculate about an attacker, promise that deletion removed every copy, or minimize risk before the investigation supports that conclusion. Coordinate public statements so employees, customers, regulators, and the provider receive consistent facts.
Best Value
Work with the AI provider and your internal team
Ask the provider focused questions and keep its answers with the incident record:
- Which exact objects, conversations, files, prompts, outputs, or logs were exposed?
- Was access public, authenticated, tenant-restricted, or limited to a named recipient?
- What evidence shows whether the content was viewed, downloaded, indexed, or copied?
- When did exposure begin, when was it stopped, and what systems or backups may retain it?
- What deletion, takedown, cache-removal, audit-log, and preservation procedures are available?
- Is the provider acting as your processor or as an independent controller for the affected processing?
- What incident reference number and continuing update channel should you use?
For a workplace, assign one incident owner, one technical lead, one privacy or legal lead, and one communications contact. Limit internal distribution of the exposed material to people who need it for response. If the exposure involves a customer or partner’s data, follow contractual escalation terms and avoid contacting affected people independently before the responsible organization aligns the message.
Remove copies and watch for secondary harm
After disabling the original access, search for copies using distinctive phrases, filenames, document hashes where appropriate, and the original URL. Check search-engine results, public repositories, shared drives, collaboration spaces, cached pages, screenshots, exports, and known recipient accounts. Submit removal or de-indexing requests to the relevant host or search service, and record each request and result.
For personal information, monitor financial accounts, password-reset messages, credit activity, impersonation attempts, and targeted phishing. For business information, watch for unusual vendor requests, fraudulent invoices, customer impersonation, competitive use of confidential plans, or attempts to reuse exposed credentials. Preserve suspicious messages and route them through the incident process rather than replying from an affected account.
Review the cause and reduce recurrence
Once immediate risk is controlled and required notifications are handled, conduct a documented review. OAIC describes review as a core response step, while the FTC recommends securing systems and fixing vulnerabilities that contributed to the breach. OAIC response guidance FTC response guidance
Questions for the review
- Why was the data sent to the AI tool, and was that use necessary?
- Were public links, guest access, retention, training, or export settings too permissive?
- Did an integration receive broader permissions than the task required?
- Were credentials reused, stored in code, or left active after a project ended?
- Did staff know which data categories were prohibited or required approval?
- Can sensitive fields be removed, masked, tokenized, or replaced with synthetic examples before AI processing?
- Do contracts, vendor assessments, audit logs, and deletion terms match the way the tool is actually used?
Convert findings into owners and deadlines: tighten default sharing, require approval for high-risk data, restrict integrations to least privilege, rotate secrets automatically, shorten retention where possible, train users on link and upload controls, and test the incident plan with a realistic AI scenario. Verify that each change works instead of recording a policy promise alone.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Waiting for certainty before containing. A reversible access change is usually safer than leaving a suspected public link active while people investigate.
- Deleting everything immediately. Erasing logs or the original item can make scope, timing, and notification decisions harder.
- Assuming deletion means disappearance. Service logs, backups, caches, downloads, screenshots, and other people’s copies may persist; confirm the provider’s retention and exposure details.
- Treating every event as a provider breach. A user’s accidental upload, a compromised account, and a vendor incident require different evidence and remediation.
- Applying the 72-hour GDPR period globally. Legal deadlines depend on jurisdiction, role, risk, and the facts of the incident.
- Overpromising in public statements. State what is confirmed, what remains under investigation, and what practical steps people should take.
- Ignoring third-party data. If your prompt or file contained someone else’s personal or confidential information, their rights and your contracts may matter even if your own account was not compromised.
A compact response checklist
- Restrict or disable the exposed link, file, output, integration, account, or key.
- Open an incident record and preserve screenshots, logs, notices, URLs, and correspondence.
- Classify the event as accidental sharing, compromise, provider incident, downstream copy, or a combination.
- Map the data, people, audience, access window, copies, and plausible harms.
- Reset passwords, terminate sessions, rotate keys, and inspect account activity when access may be compromised.
- Escalate to security, privacy, legal, communications, and the provider as the facts require.
- Determine notification duties for each relevant jurisdiction; do not assume one global rule.
- Search for and request removal of cached, indexed, reposted, or downloaded copies.
- Monitor for fraud, phishing, impersonation, or competitive misuse.
- Fix the permissions, workflow, retention, training, or integration weakness that allowed the exposure.
