Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not treat an AI-detector score as proof that you used AI. Save the work and its existing drafts, check the exact assignment and academic-integrity rules, and respond calmly through your institution’s process. Offer to explain your argument, sources, and writing steps; do not upload the disputed paper to more detector sites or fabricate evidence.
A detector score is a screening signal, not proof of authorship
AI detectors estimate whether writing resembles patterns associated with generated text. They may examine features such as perplexity, burstiness, sentence structure, and word predictability. Those features can occur in entirely human writing, especially when prose is short, highly structured, heavily edited, formulaic, or written in a second language.

The Australian Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) states that an “AI score” is not the probability that an assignment was AI-generated and that the score alone is insufficient to bring an allegation of misconduct. A result can justify a conversation or further review under a local policy; it cannot, by itself, establish who wrote the work.
Accuracy also varies with the document. TEQSA notes that detectors are less reliable on short submissions (for example, under 300 words), text edited after generation, and work combining human and AI-written passages. A polished paragraph, an unusually uniform style, or a simple sentence pattern is not a fingerprint of a particular author.

Why a low false-positive rate can still affect real students
TEQSA uses a hypothetical example: if nobody in a class of 100 used AI and a detector had a hypothetical 1% false-positive rate, one assignment could still receive a high score. That is an illustration of base-rate reasoning, not a measured rate for any named product. Official university guidance reviewed for this article does not establish a current, independently comparable false-positive rate across detector tools.
Do not change your authentic voice to satisfy a detector
Trying to insert awkward wording, random errors, or artificial “human” markers can make your explanation less credible and may violate a course’s expectations. Toronto guidance notes that simple, uniform, or unusually polished writing can be flagged. Washington University in St. Louis warns that non-native English speakers and some grammar-corrected writing can be disproportionately flagged. The appropriate response is corroborating evidence about your process, not disguising your style.
First, read the rules that applied to this assignment
Before replying to an instructor, identify the policy for the specific course and submission. Rules can distinguish between prohibited AI-generated passages and permitted assistance such as spelling correction, translation, brainstorming, accessibility tools, or limited editing. A detector may be wrong, but an undisclosed tool can still raise a separate policy question if the assignment restricted it.
- Open the assignment brief and rubric. Look for language on generative AI, automated editing, translation, proofreading, citation tools, and disclosure.
- Check the course or department academic-integrity policy. Note the definition of misconduct, permitted evidence, meeting rights, response deadlines, and appeal route.
- Record what you actually used. Include word processors, grammar or translation tools, accessibility software, and any AI feature. Do not describe a tool as “just proofreading” if it generated or rewrote text.
- Save a copy of the rules. Keep the version or date that applied when you submitted the work, because policies and detector features can change.
Guidance from the University of Notre Dame illustrates why tool details matter: an AI-powered editing tool may suggest or generate text, so a course prohibition can restrict its use unless the instructor explicitly allowed it. This is a question about the assignment’s rule and your actual conduct, not something a detector score can answer.

Preserve the evidence that already exists
Do not delete, rewrite, backdate, or manufacture records after a flag. Keep the submitted file untouched and make copies for sharing. Process evidence does not have to be perfect; it should accurately show how the work developed.
Useful records to gather
- Earlier drafts, including files with meaningful changes.
- Outlines, handwritten or typed notes, research questions, and discarded passages.
- Version history from a word processor or cloud document, with dates and authorship information intact.
- Source records: library searches, downloaded papers, quotations, page numbers, and citation-manager entries.
- Instructor feedback, peer comments, and revision notes that explain changes between drafts.
- Calculations, code, sketches, interview notes, or other subject-specific working material.
- A factual account of any permitted editing, translation, accessibility, or AI-assisted feature you used.
Explain what each item demonstrates and identify gaps honestly. A missing version history is not proof of misconduct, just as a complete history is not automatic proof of every sentence’s origin. Never create a staged “draft” to fill a gap; an inconsistency can damage your credibility more than the original detector result.
Protect privacy and intellectual property
Do not upload the disputed assignment to additional free detector or “humanizer” websites to obtain a second score. The University of Melbourne warns that detector tools can be inaccurate and that uploading work may expose your intellectual property. TEQSA also raises privacy, IT-policy, and copyright concerns when unlicensed third-party detectors are used. Ask whether your institution has an approved channel before sending a file, and share copies rather than your only original.

Sample neutral reply
“Thank you for letting me know. I wrote this work myself and can explain how I developed the argument and used the sources. I have retained drafts, notes, and version history, and I’m happy to share relevant materials through the appropriate process. Could you let me know which policy and next step apply?”
Use only the evidence you actually possess. If you used a translation or editing feature, state that accurately and ask how the course treats it. Do not claim that a detector is infallible, and do not claim that your score proves the opposite. The point is to move the discussion from an unexplained percentage to the assignment’s rules and the total evidence.
Questions you can ask without escalating the tone
- Which academic-integrity or course policy governs this concern?
- Is the detector result a screening prompt, or is it being presented as evidence of a violation?
- What document, passages, or other evidence will be considered?
- What is the deadline for a written response or meeting?
- Can I submit drafts and version history through an approved, secure channel?
- What appeal or review process applies if a penalty is proposed?
Prepare to explain the work in your own words
If you are invited to a meeting, focus on the intellectual decisions behind the submission rather than trying to perform a technical debate about detector algorithms.
Recommended Free Tools
Explain the argument
- State your thesis and why you chose it.
- Describe how the structure developed and why sections appear in that order.
- Explain how particular sources support, complicate, or limit your claims.
- Discuss a revision that changed your reasoning, evidence, or wording.
- Clarify any unusual phrase, quotation, or factual error you corrected.
Be precise about tools
List the software you actually used and what it did. Distinguish spellchecking from a tool that proposed complete sentences. If a translation or accessibility tool changed wording, say so. If you did not use an AI system, state that plainly without speculating about what the detector “must have seen.” Accuracy matters even when the concern is mistaken.

Bring organized copies
Prepare a chronology with the submitted file first, then earlier drafts, notes, and sources. Keep the originals and provide copies in the format the institution requests. Label dates and explain any missing material in one sentence rather than making assumptions about what an examiner will infer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand that institutions handle detector reports differently
Policies vary by institution, jurisdiction, course, and date. The following positions are examples, not a universal rule.
| Institution or authority | Guidance described | What it means for a student |
|---|---|---|
| TEQSA | An AI score alone is insufficient to bring an allegation; detector results are estimates and require context. | Ask for corroborating evidence and the applicable procedure. |
| University of British Columbia | UBC says it has not enabled Turnitin’s AI-detection feature and cites concerns about effectiveness, accuracy, bias mitigation, and privacy. | Do not assume another institution uses the same tool or standard. |
| University of Toronto | Toronto says it does not support using AI-detection software on student work. | Its position should not be generalized to every university. |
| University of Melbourne | Student guidance describes a local process in which a report can prompt further inquiry and warns about tool inaccuracy and intellectual-property exposure. | A report may start questions; it is not necessarily a finding. |
| Washington University in St. Louis | Guidance warns about disproportionate flagging of non-native English speakers and false positives associated with some grammar-corrected writing. | Ask that language background and editing history be considered fairly. |
| University of Notre Dame | AI-powered editing tools may generate suggestions; a course prohibition can restrict them unless explicitly allowed. | Tool use must be evaluated under the assignment rule, separately from detector reliability. |
These examples show why online advice cannot replace your institution’s current policy. Guidance cited here was available on 13 October 2026; detector features and local procedures can change.
If the concern becomes a formal allegation
Follow the stated procedure and every deadline. A formal process may include a notice, an opportunity to submit a response, a meeting, a decision, and an appeal. Missing a deadline can limit your options even when the underlying detector result is weak.
Best Value
- Request the governing policy and timeline. Confirm whether the matter is an informal inquiry or a formal allegation.
- Ask what evidence will be considered. This may include the detector report, the assignment, drafts, citations, and an interview. Ask how you can respond to each item.
- Submit a factual statement. Address the argument, sources, drafts, version history, and tools used. Avoid claims you cannot support.
- Use available support. If your institution provides a student advocate, ombudsperson, students’ union adviser, or equivalent service, ask about its role, confidentiality, and deadlines. Availability differs by institution.
- Keep a complete case file. Save notices, your responses, attachments, meeting dates, and decisions in one secure location.
Ask for reasonable accommodations if a disability, language issue, or other protected circumstance affects your ability to participate. The relevant office and process differ by institution, so use the contact named in the policy rather than relying on a general internet template.
How to evaluate the detector report itself
Separate five questions that are often incorrectly collapsed into one percentage:
- What role is the result playing? Is it merely a prompt for human review, or is someone treating it as proof?
- What is the document like? Consider length, formulaic sections, extensive editing, mixed-origin passages, and language background.
- What independent process evidence exists? Drafts, notes, source trails, and an explanation of the argument can be more probative than a score alone.
- What did the assignment allow? A detector cannot determine whether a permitted editing or translation tool was used within the rules.
- Was the work handled lawfully and securely? Ask whether the detector was approved under institutional privacy, IT, and copyright policies.
This framework avoids two opposite mistakes: assuming every flagged writer cheated, or assuming every flagged result is technically impossible. The question is whether the complete, policy-governed evidence supports a finding about this particular assignment.
What not to do after a false flag
- Do not pay for a “humanizer” or submit the paper to a chain of unapproved detectors.
- Do not alter the submitted document or create retroactive drafts.
- Do not accuse an instructor of misconduct before you understand the process.
- Do not ignore a formal notice because the detector is unreliable.
- Do not hide permitted or prohibited tool use; explain it precisely.
- Do not publish your full assignment or personal records publicly while disputing the result.
When you have little process evidence
Some students write in one sitting, use paper notes, or lose a cloud history. Say that directly. You can still explain your thesis, sources, revisions, and tool use in detail. Provide whatever genuine records remain, such as library downloads, citation files, feedback, or earlier outlines. Evidence is cumulative; the absence of a particular file does not establish authorship either way.
Bottom line: respond to the process, not the percentage
A false AI-detector flag is best handled as a procedural and evidentiary problem. Preserve the work, check the exact rules, avoid risky third-party uploads, respond professionally, and explain your writing decisions. If the institution proceeds formally, use its deadlines and appeal route and seek an available student advocate or ombudsperson. A detector score can trigger questions, but it cannot by itself prove who wrote your work.
