For a legitimate transaction that was blocked, contact the bank through an independently verified official channel and complete its verification process. For a credit denial, read the adverse-action notice, obtain the cited report, and challenge inaccurate information with both the reporting company and the business that supplied it. Automated or AI-assisted decisioning does not remove a lender’s duty to give specific principal reasons.
First identify which problem you have
“AI banking system” can describe very different events. A bank may use automated monitoring to decline a card payment, hold a transfer, or request identity verification. That is not the same as money being taken without your permission. A lender may use a scoring model or machine-learning system and then deny a loan or credit-card application. A checking-account application can also be rejected because of a deposit-account screening report rather than a standard credit report.

The remedy, deadline and evidence depend on the category. Use this decision table before you call.
| Situation | Primary contact | Immediate objective |
|---|---|---|
| Legitimate transaction declined, held or flagged | Your bank or credit union, using an official channel | Find out whether verification, documentation or a manual review is required |
| Transfer you did not authorize or money missing | Your bank or credit union | Report an unauthorized electronic transfer and open the institution’s error investigation |
| Loan or credit application denied | The creditor named on the application | Read the adverse-action notice and obtain the specific principal reasons |
| Credit denial based on a consumer report | The creditor and the reporting company identified in the notice | Request the report and dispute inaccurate information with both the reporting company and its furnisher |
| Checking-account application denied | The bank and the checking-account reporting company | Obtain the screening report and challenge inaccurate entries with both parties |
Federal guidance cited here is for the United States. It does not establish how a particular bank’s model works, and it does not create a universal deadline for clearing a legitimate transaction that was merely held for review.

When a legitimate transaction is flagged, declined or held
1. Verify that you are contacting the real institution
Use the bank’s official mobile app, the telephone number printed on your card or statement, or the institution’s official website that you reach independently. Do not rely on a phone number, link or reply address in an unexpected text, email or social-media message. A fraudster may impersonate a bank and claim that a transaction was blocked in order to obtain your password, one-time code or account number.
2. Ask the bank to classify the event
Use precise language: “Was this payment declined, placed on hold, or treated as unauthorized activity?” Ask what identity verification or documentation is required, whether you must take any further action, and when the review will be updated. A card decline may require a retry after verification; a transfer hold may require a separate review; an unauthorized-activity case is a dispute with different rules.
3. Create a contemporaneous record
- Write down the transaction date, amount, merchant or recipient and payment method.
- Record the time of every call or chat, the representative’s name or identification number, and any case or reference number.
- Save confirmation screens, emails and documents you submit.
- Note the promised follow-up date and the exact instructions you were given.
This record is practical evidence for a later review. It is not a federal deadline for removing a false alert.

Change a password if you disclosed it or suspect account compromise, enable available multi-factor authentication, and review recent activity through the official app or statement. Do not send a full password, authentication code or remote-access permission to someone who contacted you unexpectedly.
5. Escalate the description, not the emotion
If front-line support cannot explain the status, ask for the fraud, payments or account-review team and provide your reference number. State the outcome you need: confirmation that the transaction is legitimate, release of a held payment, correction of a mistaken restriction, or a written explanation of what remains outstanding. Keep the request limited to the transaction at issue so the reviewer can match your documents to the case.

When the transaction was not authorized or money is missing
Say explicitly that you did not authorize the transfer. Do not describe it only as a “false fraud flag.” The bank’s electronic-transfer error process is designed for an unauthorized transfer or an error that removed money, not simply for a legitimate payment that a monitoring system declined.
Report promptly and identify the transfer
Contact the bank or credit union through an official channel and provide the account, date, amount, recipient and any transaction identifier. Ask what written confirmation is required and how to monitor the investigation. Keep copies of your notice and any follow-up.
Understand the investigation periods
Consumer Financial Protection Bureau guidance says a bank or credit union generally has ten business days to investigate after receiving notice of an unauthorized electronic fund transfer. Certain circumstances allow a longer period. If the institution cannot complete its investigation within the applicable ten- or twenty-business-day period, it generally must provide temporary credit while continuing the investigation, subject to the rule’s conditions. The institution must correct an error within one business day after determining that an error occurred. These periods depend on the transfer type and circumstances; they should not be presented as guaranteed deadlines for a routine fraud-screening hold.
Check the temporary credit and final decision
Ask whether temporary credit was issued, what amount it covers and whether any portion remains under review. When the investigation ends, request the result and the basis for any denial of your claim. If the bank asks for additional information, provide it through the secure channel it identifies and keep proof of delivery.
When a lender denies your loan or credit application
Read the adverse-action notice before disputing anything
The creditor’s adverse-action notice should give the specific reasons for the denial or tell you how to obtain them. Read every page, including any page that identifies a consumer reporting company. The notice is your map: it tells you whether a report was used, names the reporting company when applicable, and describes your rights to obtain and challenge that report.

Ask for the actual principal reasons
If the notice uses broad wording such as “internal score,” “insufficient information” or “risk policy,” ask the lender to clarify the principal factors that led to the adverse decision and which information informed them. Keep the request factual and in writing. Ask whether the cited factor came from your application, a consumer report or another source.
CFPB Circular 2022-03 explains that the Equal Credit Opportunity Act and Regulation B adverse-action requirements apply regardless of the technology used. Its consumer-facing rule is direct: “Creditors who use complex algorithms, including artificial intelligence or machine learning, in any aspect of their credit decisions must still provide a notice that discloses the specific principal reasons for taking an adverse action.” A model’s complexity or lack of interpretability is not a reason to provide an inaccurate or meaningless explanation.
Request the report identified in the notice
When a consumer report contributed to the decision, you can request a free copy from the reporting company named in the adverse-action notice within 60 days. Use the company identified by the creditor rather than guessing which bureau supplied data. Compare the report with your own records, application and identification documents.
Look for the errors that can change a decision
- Accounts, inquiries or addresses that belong to someone else.
- Balances, payment status, dates or account ownership that are wrong.
- Information that is incomplete or duplicated.
- Accounts opened through identity theft.
- Information that does not match the documents you submitted to the lender.
Do not assume that a low score itself proves an error. Identify the particular entry or data field that is inaccurate, incomplete or not yours.
How to dispute a credit-report error correctly
Dispute with both responsible parties
Send a written dispute to the consumer reporting company and separately to the company that furnished the inaccurate information, such as a lender or account servicer. A dispute sent to only one side may leave the underlying record unchanged. Use the address or secure-upload instructions provided by each company.

- Explain exactly what is wrong and what the correct information should be.
- Attach copies, not originals, of statements, payment records, identity documents or other supporting material.
- Include the adverse-action notice when it shows why the item matters.
- Keep a copy of the complete submission and proof of delivery.
Clear, itemized disputes are easier to investigate than a general demand to “fix my credit.” If identity theft is involved, report it through IdentityTheft.gov and provide the resulting documentation where the reporting company or furnisher requests it.
Do not pay for a right you can exercise yourself
CFPB guidance says consumers can dispute inaccurate credit-report information directly. Be wary of anyone promising to remove accurate, current negative information or charging a fee simply to submit a dispute you could file yourself. A legitimate dispute challenges information that is actually inaccurate, incomplete or the result of identity theft; it is not a request to erase accurate history.
Match the dispute to the lender’s stated reason
If the notice says a delinquent account caused the denial, challenge that account only if its facts are wrong. If the notice cites debt, income, employment or another application factor that is not a consumer-report entry, a credit-bureau dispute may not address the reason. Ask the creditor what information it relied on and correct the relevant source instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If a checking-account application was denied
A deposit-account screening report is different from a credit score or a standard credit report. Banks may use such a report when deciding whether to open a checking account. If the bank says a report influenced the denial, the adverse-action notice should provide the screening company’s contact details.
- Request a free copy of the screening report after receiving the adverse-action notice.
- Review names, prior account information, balances, closure reasons and any fraud-related notation for accuracy.
- Dispute each inaccurate entry with the checking-account reporting company.
- Send the same factual dispute and supporting documents to the bank or other business that furnished the entry.
- Ask the bank to reconsider after the report is corrected and keep the updated report and correspondence.
Do not substitute a regular credit report for the screening report named by the bank. They serve different purposes and may contain different information.

What to say in a call or written request
For a legitimate transaction hold
“I authorized the transaction dated [date] for [amount] to [merchant or recipient]. Was it declined, placed on hold or classified as unauthorized activity? Please tell me the verification steps, the case number and when I should expect an update.”
For an unauthorized transfer
“I did not authorize the electronic transfer dated [date] for [amount] from [account]. Please open an unauthorized-transfer investigation, tell me what notice or documents you need, and confirm how temporary credit and the investigation result will be communicated.”
For an AI-assisted credit denial
“Please provide the specific principal reasons for the adverse action and identify which information or consumer report produced each reason. If a consumer report was used, please confirm the reporting company named in the notice and the procedure for requesting my free copy.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCommon mistakes that slow resolution
- Calling a number supplied in a suspicious message instead of verifying the bank’s contact details independently.
- Describing an unauthorized transfer as merely a declined transaction.
- Assuming an AI decision is unchallengeable because the lender cannot explain its model.
- Disputing only with a reporting company and not with the furnisher of the inaccurate data.
- Sending originals, omitting the disputed account details or failing to keep delivery proof.
- Assuming a standard credit report contains the checking-account screening data used in a deposit-account denial.
- Applying the ten-business-day electronic-transfer investigation period to every legitimate fraud alert.
When the institution’s explanation still appears wrong
Organize a single chronology containing the notice, transaction or application details, reports, disputes, attachments, reference numbers and responses. Point out the exact inconsistency: for example, a paid account reported as delinquent, an account that is not yours, or a notice that gives no specific principal reason. Ask the institution to state what information it corrected or verified and whether it will reconsider the transaction or application.
The federal sources summarized here are consumer-protection guidance for the United States, not a substitute for advice about a particular lawsuit, state-law remedy or contract. Agency pages and institutional procedures can change, so check the current instructions that accompany your notice and the applicable rules when you act.
Key dates and responsibilities
| Item | What the cited guidance says | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Free report after a credit adverse-action notice | Request from the named consumer reporting company within 60 days | Use the notice to identify the correct reporting company and request method |
| Initial unauthorized electronic-transfer investigation | Generally ten business days after notice; certain circumstances allow longer periods | Report promptly and ask which period applies to your transfer |
| Temporary credit during a delayed investigation | Generally required when the institution cannot finish within the applicable ten- or twenty-business-day period, subject to the rule’s terms | Ask whether temporary credit was issued and what amount remains under review |
| Error correction | One business day after the bank or credit union determines an error occurred | Request confirmation of the correction and retain it |
The investigation periods above come from CFPB electronic-transfer guidance last reviewed August 28, 2026. The 60-day report-access period is described in CFPB and Federal Trade Commission consumer guidance. They are procedural periods, not population statistics, and they do not establish a deadline for a bank to release a legitimate transaction held for fraud review.
