Preserve the complete answer, your prompt, date and time, assistant and model name, citations, screenshots, and any shareable conversation link. Then verify the disputed statement against reliable records, report the specific response through the provider’s feedback or legal channel, and make a separate privacy request when the output contains personal information about you.
These steps address the assistant’s output; they do not automatically remove a false statement from a cited webpage, search result, social post, or copy shared by another person. If the claim creates serious employment, safety, financial, or reputational risk, obtain advice from a qualified lawyer or privacy regulator in the relevant jurisdiction. Whether a legal claim exists depends on local law and the facts.

First identify what “false report” means
An AI answer can be wrong in more than one way. The model may invent an accusation, misstate your work or legal history, combine your details with somebody else’s, or repeat a false claim found on a webpage. Before choosing a remedy, copy the precise sentence and determine which of these situations applies:
- Generated falsehood: the cited material does not support the statement, or no source is provided.
- False external source: the assistant accurately repeats what a webpage says, but that webpage is wrong.
- Both: the answer adds an unsupported conclusion to an inaccurate source.
This distinction matters because a provider can address an answer in its product, while a publisher, platform, or search engine controls the outside page. A report to the AI company is not a legal finding and does not automatically change information elsewhere.

Preserve evidence before reporting
Do not edit, delete, or rely on a single temporary view of the conversation. Save an original copy and make a short timeline of what happened afterward.
Capture the complete interaction
- Save the full response, including the question or prompt that produced it. If the answer changed after a follow-up, preserve each relevant version.
- Record the date and time, product name, account or workspace type, and any model or version label shown in the interface.
- Copy every citation, linked page, footnote, and quoted passage. Open the links and save the relevant page as a PDF or screenshot if permitted.
- Take screenshots showing the surrounding interface and the exact wording. If the service offers a conversation URL, save that link as well, while remembering that access permissions can change.
- Keep an unedited archive and a working copy on which you can highlight the disputed sentence. Preserve file metadata where practical.
Write down who saw the output, whether it was publicly shared, and any consequence such as a rejected application, threatening message, or contact from an employer. That chronology can help a provider, regulator, or lawyer understand urgency without requiring you to repost the allegation.
Check the statement against reliable records
Quote the exact words at issue; do not summarize them as a broader accusation. Compare them with authoritative documents such as court or government records, your own dated correspondence, professional registers, employment records, or statements from an organization that actually has knowledge of the fact. Note what each record proves and what it does not prove.

Separate the model’s claim from its evidence
An answer can sound confident while its citation says something different. Check whether the linked page exists, is current, refers to you rather than another person, and actually contains the alleged fact. Record publication and update dates, author or publisher, and any correction notice. If the source is inaccessible, say that in your report rather than assuming what it contains.

Do not amplify an unverified accusation
A public post repeating the false statement can spread it further and make later correction harder. Send evidence privately to the provider and, when appropriate, the source publisher. Tell people who already received the claim that it is disputed only when necessary to protect an immediate interest, and avoid adding speculation.
Report the exact response to the AI provider
Use the product’s in-app feedback or reporting route and identify the specific conversation. Explain in a few sentences: the disputed text, why it is inaccurate, the reliable evidence that contradicts it, and the action you are requesting. Attach documents or links that a reviewer can open, while redacting unrelated personal information.
ChatGPT
On web or mobile, OpenAI’s Help Center instructions say to select the thumbs-down control on the message, choose an issue, select “Safety or Legal concern,” and follow the prompts. Include the conversation date, the exact sentence, citations, and supporting records. A feedback report tells OpenAI about that output; it is not a promise that every user will see a correction.

Microsoft Copilot
Microsoft’s Copilot privacy FAQ directs users to Give feedback in Settings, the flag icon below a response on web or mobile, or (in the Copilot app) long-pressing the response and choosing Report. Microsoft’s individual Copilot terms also direct legal concerns to its Report a Concern page. Those individual terms do not apply automatically to Microsoft 365 Copilot, so use the reporting path for the exact product and account you used.

Google Gemini Apps
Google’s Gemini help guidance says to click the thumbs-down control on an inaccurate or inappropriate answer and provide feedback. Include the complete response and explain which statement about you is wrong. Google warns that Gemini can give inaccurate information about people and that its responses do not represent Google’s views.

These routes are documented differently and should not be treated as equivalent legal remedies. Product menus can change, and an enterprise or education account may have an administrator-controlled process.
When the output contains your personal information
A false statement that identifies you by name, contact detail, profile, URL, employment history, criminal history, health information, or another personal detail may justify a privacy request in addition to ordinary feedback. Describe exactly what the assistant displayed and identify each item of personal data. Explain why it is inaccurate, excessive, irrelevant, or no longer appropriate, and attach reliable records.

OpenAI says a person may use its Privacy Portal request to remove personal data from ChatGPT responses whether or not they have a ChatGPT account. Its guidance states that requests are reviewed case by case, balancing privacy interests against considerations such as freedom of expression and public interest; approval is not guaranteed. OpenAI recommends specific examples and links, identification of the data (for example, a name, contact detail, or URL), an explanation of why removal is necessary, and reliable supporting evidence. The company says it assesses accuracy using what the requester supplies and cannot independently investigate disputed facts. A request may be made by the affected person or an authorized representative, and proof of authority may be requested.

OpenAI’s US Privacy Policy says: For this reason, you should not rely on the factual accuracy of output from our models.
The policy also describes requests to correct or remove factually inaccurate personal information in ChatGPT output through its privacy channels, subject to applicable law and technical capabilities. Depending on where you live, it lists possible rights such as rectification and the ability to complain to a local data-protection authority.
A privacy request is not automatically granted, and it is not the same as a court order. If OpenAI declines or inadequately addresses a request, its guidance says you may consider complaining to your local supervisory authority where applicable.

If the assistant cites a false webpage, contact the publisher or platform that controls it. Point to the exact sentence, supply records that disprove it, and request a correction, update, or removal under that site’s process. If a search engine displays the page or a cached result, its own reporting route may be separate. Keep copies of every request and response.
Removing or correcting an AI response does not remove the source page. Likewise, a publisher’s correction does not guarantee that an AI system will immediately stop repeating an older indexed copy. Treat each location—assistant response, source page, search result, shared post, and cached copy—as a separate item to document and address.
If the claim says you committed a crime
Preserve the exact accusation and any evidence of who received it. Do not respond by publishing additional details that could expose you or someone else. Report the output to the provider, challenge any inaccurate source page, and seek local legal advice promptly if the statement could affect employment, immigration, housing, safety, or an active investigation. A criminal-sounding output is not proof that an offense occurred, but the seriousness of the possible consequences makes jurisdiction-specific advice important.
When to escalate beyond online feedback
Consider a qualified lawyer or relevant privacy regulator when the statement has caused or may cause substantial harm, when a provider or publisher refuses to correct a demonstrably false personal-data claim, or when you face a deadline from an employer, regulator, court, or other institution. Bring your evidence archive, timeline, copies of reports, and responses. Ask about the law where you live and where the publication or recipient is located; do not assume that a false output automatically meets the legal test for defamation, that a platform is liable, or that a particular deadline applies.
A concise reporting template
You can adapt this wording for a provider or publisher:
Subject: Inaccurate statement about me in [product/page]“On [date and time], [product or page] stated: ‘[exact sentence].’ This is inaccurate because [specific explanation]. The relevant evidence is [record and link]. The statement identifies me by [data]. Please review this item, correct or remove it under your applicable process, and tell me whether you need proof of identity or authority. I have preserved the original response and can provide the conversation link and screenshots.”
Keep the request factual and narrow. A reviewer can act more easily on one precisely identified sentence than on a general assertion that an entire system is biased or dishonest.

- A confident answer is not verification. Microsoft says Copilot can produce convincing but incomplete or inaccurate answers, and Google warns that Gemini may provide inaccurate information about people.
- A feedback submission is not a legal ruling, guaranteed correction, or admission of liability.
