What to Do If an AI Adviser Recommends a Portfolio That Doesn’t Fit Your Goals

If an AI or robo-adviser recommends an investment mix that seems wrong for your goal, pause before trading and check what information and assumptions produced it. Confirm the goal and timing, correct any missing or outdated details, ask for the rationale, and review the service’s documents, costs, and professional background. A mismatch is a reason to investigate—not, by itself, proof of misconduct or a reason to sell immediately.

What should I do if my investment portfolio doesn’t match my goals?

Start by describing the mismatch in concrete terms. A portfolio can feel unsuitable because the money is needed sooner than the recommendation assumes, because you cannot tolerate its potential volatility, or because the system did not consider important parts of your finances. These are different problems and call for different questions.

  1. Write down the goal. Note what the account is meant to fund, when you may need the money, the amount or share of your assets involved, and any need to withdraw cash.
  2. Identify what concerns you. Is the recommended risk level too high or too low, is access to cash a concern, or does the portfolio appear inconsistent with information you gave the adviser?
  3. Hold off on a rushed trade. Do not buy or sell solely because the recommendation feels uncomfortable. First find out whether the mismatch reflects an input error, a limitation of the service, or a genuine difference in how you and the adviser assess the goal.

Consider the goal’s purpose, time horizon, risk tolerance, liquidity needs, and broader financial circumstances together. The SEC’s Investor Bulletin: Robo-Advisers and its Investor Bulletin: Opening an Investment Advisory Account discuss these factors for U.S. investors. They provide investor education, not an individualized suitability decision or legal opinion.

Why did the AI adviser recommend this portfolio?

A robo-adviser’s output generally depends on information it requests and the answers it receives. A questionnaire may ask about goals, when you expect to need the money, income or assets, and how much risk you are comfortable taking. The service then applies its own assumptions and available portfolio choices. If an answer is inaccurate, a goal has changed, or an important circumstance was never asked about, the recommendation may not reflect your situation.

Automated investment tools can also have limits: they may not account for all of your other holdings, debts, cash reserves, tax circumstances, or near-term cash needs. The SEC and FINRA’s Investor Alert: Automated Investment Tools explains that outputs depend on the information and assumptions used. That does not establish that a particular recommendation is wrong; it gives you a reason to check what the tool considered.

Audit the information the service used

  • Review the goal and expected date you entered. Check whether either has changed.
  • Check your risk answers. Consider whether you understood the questions as intended, and whether your comfort with volatility differs from your ability to bear losses.
  • Look for missing or stale information about other accounts and investments, debts, cash reserves, taxes, and planned withdrawals.
  • Check whether a recent life or financial change needs to be reflected in the account profile or discussed with a human adviser.

Correct errors through the service’s official process rather than assuming the system has inferred them. Then ask whether an updated recommendation or review is available.

What should I ask the adviser to explain?

Ask for an explanation tied to the specific goal, not just a general description of the algorithm or portfolio. You can ask:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • What portfolio did you recommend for this goal, and why does its allocation fit my expected timeline and risk tolerance?
  • Which answers, assumptions, or preset choices drove the recommendation?
  • What risks or losses could I experience, and how might the portfolio behave if I need the money earlier than expected?
  • What information about my other holdings, debts, cash reserves, taxes, or withdrawals did you consider—and what does the tool not consider?
  • What alternative allocations or investment choices were available, and why was this one selected?
  • What events or changes would lead to rebalancing or a different recommendation?
  • Can a qualified investment professional review my case, and what role would that person play?

The SEC’s guidance encourages investors to understand whether a robo-adviser and its portfolio match their needs and goals, as well as the service’s potential costs, risks, and benefits. A clear answer should connect the allocation to your circumstances and explain relevant limits; a generic description may not resolve a goal-specific concern.

Which documents, fees, and restrictions should I check?

Read the actual documents for your service and account, because services, investment limitations, costs, and exit terms vary. Compare what you were led to expect with what the written materials say.

  • Advisory agreement: Check the services promised, monitoring or rebalancing arrangements, investment limitations, cancellation process, transfer terms, and any stated complaint or remedy route.
  • Form CRS, where applicable: Review the relationship summary for services, fees and costs, conflicts, standards of conduct, legal or disciplinary history, and questions to ask.
  • Form ADV brochure: Review the adviser’s narrative disclosures about business practices, fees, conflicts, and disciplinary information.
  • Statements and fee schedules: Identify both the advisory charge and costs charged by the investments themselves. A low advisory fee alone does not establish that the total cost is low.

The SEC’s How Fees and Expenses Affect Your Investment Portfolio bulletin, dated July 23, 2025, explains why fees and expenses matter and points investors to disclosure materials. Check the documents and current account terms rather than assuming that a headline fee includes every cost. If you are evaluating another service, compare goal and time-horizon fit, risk, liquidity, breadth of information considered, access to human review, investment choices, total advisory and product costs, conflicts, rebalancing and tax handling, and exit terms.

How can I check the adviser’s background?

For a U.S. advisory relationship, look up both the firm and the relevant individual using the SEC’s Investment Advisers resource and the Investment Adviser Public Disclosure (IAPD) system it directs investors to. If a broker is involved, SEC and FINRA guidance also points to FINRA BrokerCheck. Review available registration and disciplinary information, and verify records and contact details directly because they can change. A clean record does not show that a particular portfolio fits your goal.

What if the explanation still doesn’t resolve the mismatch?

Choose a next step that matches the problem. If you found incorrect or outdated profile information, correct it and request a fresh explanation. If the adviser’s explanation conflicts with the service agreement, ask the firm to clarify the difference in writing. If you still cannot assess the recommendation in light of your circumstances, you may seek a second opinion from a qualified investment professional; that is an option, not a required step.
