An unlocked phone is not automatically compatible or eligible for activation: the carrier must accept that specific device, and calling may also depend on VoLTE support and provisioning. The right next step depends on the error message and whether the problem is eligibility, unlocking, the SIM or account, or voice service.
Before troubleshooting, record the model and error
On the phone, open Settings > About phone and note the exact model. Also note the intended US carrier, where the phone was originally sold or which carrier it came from, and the precise wording shown by the activation screen or eligibility checker. Find the IMEI in the phone’s settings if needed, but do not post it in a public forum or article comment.

Keep the error message intact when contacting support. “No match found,” a lock warning, and a SIM or account error point to different checks; the message alone may not identify the cause.
Check whether the carrier accepts this exact phone
Before retrying BYOD activation, enter the handset’s IMEI or device ID in the intended carrier’s current checker. Verizon says a device must be unlocked and compatible with its network to be brought to a new or existing plan; see its BYOD FAQs. T-Mobile also asks customers to check the IMEI and supported frequencies in its BYOD guide.

An “unlocked” label only means the phone is not restricted by a carrier lock. It does not establish that the carrier supports the model, that the IMEI is eligible, or that every network feature will work.
- If the checker accepts the phone: follow that carrier’s activation flow, using the SIM or eSIM option it supports for your model.
- If it rejects the IMEI or reports no match: contact the carrier with the exact model and error. Ask whether the result means the model is unsupported, the phone is locked, or there is an account or activation issue. T-Mobile specifically advises checking frequency support when its checker returns “No match found.”
- If a device-support page lists ZTE: treat that as troubleshooting information, not proof that your exact handset is approved for BYOD. AT&T’s device support selector is not itself an activation-eligibility decision.
Confirm the phone is unlocked
Ask the original carrier or seller to confirm the lock status; if the phone is locked, request an unlock from that carrier if it is eligible. A new carrier generally cannot remove the original carrier’s lock. Verizon’s BYOD FAQ says an unlocked, compatible device can be brought to Verizon and notes that eSIM or dual-SIM activation after unlocking can take up to 24 hours. That timing applies to Verizon’s stated process, not every carrier or phone.

Use a SIM cross-test to narrow the problem
If the phone recognizes the SIM but has no service, test that SIM in another phone known to be compatible with the intended carrier. ZTE recommends this kind of test in its network troubleshooting guidance.
- The SIM works in the other phone: that points follow-up toward the ZTE model, its compatibility, or carrier provisioning for that handset. Ask the carrier to check activation and provisioning for the ZTE.
- The SIM also fails in the other phone: ask the carrier to inspect the SIM, line, and account. The cross-test helps isolate the problem, but it does not by itself prove the exact cause.
If data works but calls do not, check VoLTE
Voice calling over LTE has several prerequisites: the handset must support VoLTE, the local network must support it, and the SIM or line must have VoLTE service enabled. ZTE’s VoLTE guidance also says some operators enable service directly on the SIM, while others require the SIM to be used at a physical office. If your phone has a VoLTE setting, enable it; then ask the carrier whether VoLTE is enabled for your SIM or line.

Check network bands and feature expectations
A model can pass one check and still have limited service or features. Compare the exact model’s network bands and capabilities with the intended carrier’s current requirements, and ask the carrier about any feature you rely on, such as voice service or eSIM. T-Mobile warns that non-T-Mobile handsets can differ in performance, features, and compatibility; a partial frequency match may not deliver every advanced-network feature. See its BYOD information.
There is no reliable blanket ranking of US carriers for all ZTE phones. The useful comparison is model-specific: IMEI acceptance, band compatibility, unlock status, SIM or eSIM support, VoLTE support and provisioning, and the carrier’s activation procedure.

Who to contact, and what to do if activation still fails
Use the carrier for account status, IMEI eligibility, SIM or eSIM activation, network support, and line provisioning. Use ZTE for handset-specific settings or hardware troubleshooting. AT&T’s device help guidance, updated November 8, 2024, also directs customers with service issues to the device manufacturer.

- Give carrier support the exact ZTE model, the checker result, the error text, and whether the SIM works in another compatible phone.
- Ask the carrier to identify whether the block is device eligibility, lock status, account or SIM activation, network compatibility, or VoLTE provisioning.
- If the carrier confirms the model is not eligible, ask what supported devices can be activated on the plan before buying a replacement. Check the replacement’s exact model and IMEI with that carrier first; “unlocked ZTE” alone is not a compatibility guarantee.
