If a Zcash transaction appears pending after an upgrade, first update your wallet from its official source, let it finish syncing, and check the transaction ID (TXID) and status. Do not send the payment again while the original may still be eligible for mining: a duplicate could also confirm. The wallet’s “pending” label alone does not tell you whether the transaction was mined, is still live, or has expired.
This guidance reflects NU6.3, also called Ironwood, which activated on Zcash mainnet on July 28, 2026, at block height 3,428,143. Zcash’s NU6.3 announcement asks users to update their apps and software.

Check the transaction before trying to fix it
- Update the wallet safely. Install its latest version through the wallet’s official app-store listing or release channel. If the wallet shows an error after updating, contact that wallet’s developer; Zcash’s Network Upgrade Guide directs users to their app developer for wallet-specific problems.
- Let the wallet sync. Wait for its displayed sync status to catch up before relying on its transaction list or balance. A wallet that has not synchronized may show stale information.
- Find the TXID. Check the wallet’s sent-transaction history. If the payment began as an exchange withdrawal, check the withdrawal record there. Use the TXID to check transaction status, rather than drawing conclusions from the wallet’s “pending” label alone.
- Check whether it is mined, still live, or expired. An explorer result can help distinguish a mined transaction from one not currently visible in explorer data. A missing result by itself does not prove the transaction expired; check the wallet’s transaction status and expiry information where available.

Do not create a duplicate while the first transaction may still confirm
Wait until you establish whether the original remains eligible for mining or the wallet reports that it expired. Sending again too soon can result in both the original and the duplicate confirming, as the ZecZcash troubleshooting guide warns. If the original is still live, follow your wallet developer’s guidance rather than attempting an independent replacement.

Understand the expiry window
Zcash transactions have an expiry height: a transaction that has passed its expiry height cannot be mined and is removed from nodes’ mempools. ZIP 203 documents the default before NU7 as 40 blocks, approximately 50 minutes at the protocol’s 75-second target spacing. For NU7, it recommends 120 blocks, approximately 50 minutes at a 25-second target spacing, incorporating ZIP 218. Those are protocol timing estimates; block spacing determines the approximate wall-clock duration. See ZIP 203.
If your wallet explicitly reports that the transaction expired, check the wallet’s status and balance, then follow its instructions to send again. The expired transaction in that form is no longer eligible for mining. Do not infer expiry solely from a transaction being absent from an explorer.

Check wallet support for NU6.3 and the transaction’s pool path
NU6.3 introduced the Ironwood shielded pool. Zcash says Orchard is now restricted, and funds exiting Orchard must pass through the turnstile into Ironwood. A wallet that is outdated or does not support the pool or transaction path involved may need an update or help from its developer. The upgrade does not establish one cause for every pending transaction.
The Zcash Network Upgrade Guide notes that “If a user sends a transaction right before the upgrade, it is likely to not make it onto the chain.” This describes a transaction sent immediately before an upgrade; it does not show that every pending transaction after an upgrade has the same cause.

Do not use zcashd as a current NU6.3 recovery fix
The legacy zcashd node halted at block height 3,417,100 on July 18, 2026, before NU6.3 activated, and will not support NU6.3. Zcash points users who do not need the zcashd wallet to Zebra; users who depend on zcashd wallet data are directed to test migration to Zallet. Read Zcash’s zcashd deprecation guidance. Old zcashd rescan instructions are not a universal remedy for a current wallet.
Keep recovery credentials private
Never give a seed phrase or private key to anyone claiming to provide wallet support, and treat unsolicited support messages with suspicion. A December 16, 2024, Zcash Community Forum post by Shawn states: “Do not share your seed phrase with anyone!” The warning remains sound general security advice; the post’s wallet compatibility discussion is historical, not current NU6.3 guidance.
