If a wombat has opened a hole under your fence, treat it as a possible entrance to an active burrow. Keep people, pets, livestock, vehicles and machinery away, watch from a distance, and do not simply fill or collapse the opening. Wombats are powerful, persistent diggers; blocking one hole can make them reopen it or start another nearby. Once you know whether the animal needs to pass through, choose either a wildlife-conscious gate at the established route or a properly installed, robust mesh skirt that does not trap the wombat. Check your state’s wildlife rules before disturbing a burrow, and call a trained wildlife rescue service if the wombat is injured or orphaned.
First, make the area safe
A burrow entrance beside a fence is both a wildlife issue and a physical hazard. South Australian guidance notes that wombat burrows can be deep and long, and that collapse can endanger people, animals and infrastructure. Keep children and pets away from the opening. Move livestock away if they could step into a weakened section of ground, and do not drive vehicles or operate tractors, excavators or other heavy equipment nearby.

Do not put your hand into the hole, enter the burrow, chase a wombat, or stand directly over a fragile section of soil. A wombat may defend itself if cornered, and you cannot see how far the tunnel extends or whether another animal is inside.

Check whether the burrow is active without disturbing it
Observe from a distance
Watch the entrance quietly from a safe position. Look for fresh soil, newly disturbed vegetation, tracks and recent droppings. NSW Environment and Heritage identifies fresh droppings as a sign commonly associated with an active burrow. Avoid shining lights into the opening, poking objects inside or trying to flush the animal out.

Do not close the entrance
Never seal, collapse or bulldoze a hole while a wombat could be inside. NSW Environment and Heritage warns: “Bulldozing an active burrow can lead to wombats being buried alive and suffering a slow and painful death.” A fresh opening may connect to a larger shelter system, even when the visible hole looks small.
Get site-specific help when there is a serious risk
If the digging threatens a building, dam, road, retaining structure, livestock area or frequently used path, contact the relevant state wildlife or land-management authority before moving soil or fencing. Explain the location, visible damage and whether you have seen the wombat. Ask what inspection or exclusion method is lawful for that site.
Decide whether the wombat must be excluded
The right fence response depends on what the fence is meant to do. A wombat may be following an established route rather than randomly digging. NSW says a determined wombat may try to go through or under an obstacle instead of walking around it. Tasmania likewise describes wombats as persistent diggers: a blocked hole can be reopened or bypassed by digging beside it.

Allow passage at a known crossing
If the fence can remain effective for livestock, wallabies or other animals while allowing this wombat to cross, a wombat gate at the established route can reduce repeated damage. NSW and Tasmanian guidance both describe gates as a way to provide a controlled passage point. The gate must be located where the animal already travels; placing one at a convenient but unused section may simply move the digging.
Exclude the wombat from beneath the fence
If the fence must block passage, use a robust steel or reinforcing mesh skirt, also called an apron, along the vulnerable side. South Australian and Tasmanian guidance describes sturdy mesh as an exclusion measure, and South Australia notes that rocks can reinforce a skirt. The mesh must be securely attached to the existing fence and anchored on stable ground so the wombat cannot lift an edge or exploit a gap at a corner, gate or join.
Do not install a skirt by covering an entrance that may still be occupied. First establish, with local authority or wildlife-professional advice where necessary, that the burrow is not active and that the proposed work complies with local law. After installation, inspect the entire fence line rather than only the original hole; a wombat may test for a weaker point elsewhere.

Options for repairing the fence
| Option | Best suited to | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Wombat gate at a known route | A fence must continue serving other animals while wombat passage is acceptable | Can reduce repeated repairs and preserve an established route, but the location and design must suit the site. |
| Heavy-gauge mesh skirt or apron | A site requires stronger exclusion beneath the fence | Needs robust material and secure installation; the wombat may search for weak points along the rest of the boundary. |
| Electric-fence wires | An electric exclusion design is appropriate and can be maintained correctly | Low wires require ongoing voltage and vegetation maintenance, and Tasmania warns that unintended animal deaths can occur. Obtain local professional advice. |
| Simple patch or rocks in the hole | A temporary repair after activity and legal constraints have been assessed | May be pushed open again or cause digging nearby, so it is not a reliable standalone solution. |
How to use a wombat gate responsibly
A gate is most useful where repeated digging shows a regular crossing route. Before construction, identify the route from a distance by observing where the wombat approaches and where soil is repeatedly disturbed. Keep the opening clear of sharp edges, protruding wire and pinch points. The gate should not create a narrow trap between the fence, a drain, a wall or other obstruction.
Have a rural fencing contractor, gate fabricator or wildlife-management professional assess the site if you are unsure how to preserve the fence’s livestock function. A gate that is too low, unstable or poorly aligned may fail to provide a usable route and can leave the wombat digging beside it.
How to install an exclusion skirt or apron
Use robust material
Official guidance refers to sturdy wire or reinforcing mesh rather than a light garden barrier. A heavy-gauge steel reinforcing mesh is the type of material commonly described for this purpose. No single mesh specification is suitable for every soil, fence or animal-management objective, so select material with advice from a qualified fencing professional or the relevant authority.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Protect the weak points
Wombats can exploit an unsecured edge at a post, corner, gate, drain or change in ground level. Secure the skirt continuously to the existing fence and reinforce transitions. South Australian guidance identifies rocks as one possible reinforcement; use them only where they cannot roll, create a foothold or leave a gap underneath.
Inspect after installation
Look for fresh scrapes, displaced soil, lifted mesh and new holes along the whole boundary. A successful repair is not proved by one quiet night. Continue checking after heavy rain, ground movement and any change to nearby vegetation or water flow, because those conditions can expose an edge.
Why repeatedly filling the hole usually fails
Filling the visible opening addresses the symptom, not the route. NSW describes wombats attempting to pass through or under obstacles, while Tasmania warns that patching or blocking can lead to reopening or digging nearby. A patch can also be unsafe if the burrow remains occupied or if heavy material collapses a tunnel. Use a temporary barrier only to keep people and stock away while you obtain advice; do not treat repeated filling as a permanent control plan.

Electric fencing requires caution
Tasmanian guidance includes electric-fence wires as an option in some situations, but it emphasizes maintenance of voltage and vegetation clearance. A low wire that loses power, becomes overgrown or is installed where animals can become entangled will not provide dependable exclusion. The same guidance warns of unintended animal deaths. Because the risk depends on the design, species present and site conditions, seek local professional advice before choosing this method rather than adding improvised wires to an existing fence.
Legal duties vary by state and land status
Do not assume that a rule applying in one Australian state applies nationwide. Victoria’s Conservation Regulator identifies common wombats as protected and describes authorisation requirements for wildlife-management methods. South Australia sets conditions for when burrow disturbance may occur without a permit and identifies protected-zone exceptions. Your obligations can also depend on whether the land is private, public, in a reserve or subject to another management designation.
| Jurisdictional information in official guidance | What it means before you act |
|---|---|
| Victoria | Common wombats are protected; wildlife-management actions may require authorisation. |
| South Australia | Burrow-disturbance conditions and permit requirements vary, including protected-zone exceptions. |
| NSW and Tasmania | Government guidance explains gates, mesh and burrow-safety practices; confirm current local requirements before disturbance or exclusion work. |
Before disturbing, capturing or harming an animal, contact the current wildlife authority for your state and describe the exact situation. If you are hiring a contractor, make sure the contractor understands that the work may involve a protected species and a potentially active burrow.

What to do if the wombat is injured or orphaned
Do not attempt to raise, feed or treat an injured or orphaned wombat yourself. Tasmania advises contacting a trained wildlife rescue and rehabilitation service. Keep people and pets back, avoid pursuing the animal into its burrow, and provide the responder with the location, visible injuries and whether the mother or another wombat is nearby. A wildlife professional can decide how to approach without driving the animal deeper into the burrow or causing additional stress.
A practical response checklist
- Restrict access. Keep children, pets, livestock, vehicles and machinery away from the hole and weakened ground.
- Observe quietly. Check for fresh soil and droppings from a safe distance; do not reach into or enter the burrow.
- Pause earthworks. Do not fill, collapse or bulldoze the opening until activity and legal requirements have been checked.
- Assess the fence’s purpose. Decide whether a controlled wombat crossing is acceptable or whether complete exclusion is essential.
- Choose the least harmful effective design. Use a gate at the established route, or a robust mesh skirt/apron where exclusion is required.
- Obtain local advice. Contact the relevant state authority or a qualified wildlife and fencing professional when the site, species protection or structural risk is unclear.
- Monitor the whole boundary. Look for new digging, lifted mesh and damage around corners, gates and drains, then correct weak points without trapping an animal.
When urgent assistance is warranted
- The burrow is beside a building, dam, road, retaining wall or area used by people or livestock.
- You see a wombat that is injured, trapped, unusually exposed or separated from a dependent young animal.
- Heavy equipment or a proposed fence repair could collapse soil or block an occupied entrance.
- The animal repeatedly bypasses repairs and the fence cannot safely be modified without specialist design.
The Bottom Line
Keep everyone away, leave a possibly active burrow open, and obtain local wildlife advice before disturbing it. Then solve the route problem: provide a properly designed wombat gate where passage is acceptable, or install a secure mesh skirt that excludes digging without creating a trap.
