If a Windows update leaves your PC unstable, first check whether Windows still starts. If it does, back up important files and remove the specific recent update or troubleshoot its installation. If Windows will not start, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to try uninstalling the update before moving to more disruptive recovery options.
Before you change anything
- Back up important files if Windows starts and you can access them. Microsoft warns that some recovery choices can result in data loss.
- Have your BitLocker recovery key ready if device encryption is enabled. Most WinRE recovery options may require it.
- Identify what happened: an update that installed and was followed by a problem is different from an update that failed to download or install. A move to a new Windows version is also different from a routine quality update.
Microsoft recommends starting with the least disruptive suitable recovery option. Its Recovery options in Windows guidance notes that some choices can affect files, apps, or settings.
If Windows starts but is having problems
Remove a recent update that may have caused the issue
- Save your work and back up important files.
- In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates.
- In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then find the update-uninstall option.
- Select the relevant update and choose Uninstall.
Microsoft says uninstalling an update does not affect personal files and apps, but some updates cannot be removed. Removing a security update can reduce protection, so weigh that risk before proceeding. Microsoft’s current guidance also advises Windows 11 users to try reinstalling their version of Windows first; that is an option to consider, not a guarantee that the problem will be fixed. If the update failed to install
If the problem is an error during download or installation, use the Windows Update troubleshooter or the Get Help guidance rather than removing an update that never completed. Note the error code Windows displays and use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting steps. Possible causes include a damaged update cache or files, an interrupted or slow installation, insufficient disk space, component problems, or incompatible drivers; these are diagnostic leads, not proof of the cause.

If the issue followed an upgrade to a new Windows version
Look for Go back in Windows recovery settings. Microsoft says the option to return to the previous Windows version is available for 10 days after an upgrade. This rolls back a version upgrade; it is not the same as uninstalling one monthly or quality update. Going back may remove apps, drivers, or settings added or changed since the upgrade. Check Microsoft’s recovery-options guidance for the current route and details.
If Windows will not start
Open Windows Recovery Environment
WinRE may appear automatically after repeated failed starts. If it does not, use Microsoft’s instructions for entering Windows Recovery Environment. Once in WinRE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates, then select the relevant quality- or feature-update removal option shown on your device. Labels can vary, so follow the choices actually displayed rather than relying on a label from another PC.

If WinRE requests a BitLocker recovery key, retrieve it before continuing. If you do not have it, pause rather than guessing or choosing a more destructive recovery route.
If update removal is unavailable or does not help
WinRE may offer other recovery tools, depending on the device and what recovery resources are available. Choose based on the problem and the data impact:

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date.
