Stop using the affected drive as much as possible. Check the Windows Recycle Bin, the OneDrive web recycle bin, and any File History or other backup first. If the files were on local storage and no backup can restore them, Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery can attempt an undelete. Always write recovered files to a different physical drive; recovery is not guaranteed.
First, prevent the deleted data from being overwritten
When Windows deletes a file, its storage space is marked as available rather than immediately erased. New downloads, updates, temporary files, application caches, and even normal browsing can reuse that space. Microsoft’s official guidance is: “If you want to increase your chances of recovering a file, minimize or avoid using your computer.” This is a risk warning, not a promise that recovery will succeed.

- Stop downloading, installing, editing, or copying files on the affected drive.
- Do not run another cleanup, defragmentation, optimization, or “secure wipe” operation.
- If possible, shut down the PC after checking the obvious restore locations and prepare recovery from another Windows computer.
- Do not save recovered output to the same drive that contained the deleted files.
Before attempting command-line recovery, determine where the missing files lived. A local folder on C: follows a different path from a OneDrive-only file or a folder on a network share.

Choose the recovery route by storage location
| Where the files were stored | First option | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Local internal drive, external drive, or USB storage | Recycle Bin, then File History; Windows File Recovery if neither works | Windows File Recovery supports local storage only and needs a different destination drive. |
| OneDrive personal account | OneDrive web recycle bin | Deleted items are normally retained for 30 days unless the account’s policy differs. Cloud-only files may not appear in the Windows Recycle Bin. |
| OneDrive work or school account | OneDrive web recycle bin or administrator-managed restore | The standard retention period is 93 days unless an administrator changed it. |
| Network file share | The share’s backup or administrator | Windows File Recovery does not support network shares. |
| Cloud content made online-only by Storage Sense | Reconnect to OneDrive and make the files available offline | Making a cloud file online-only is not the same as permanently deleting it. |
Check reversible restore locations before undeleting
1. Restore from the Windows Recycle Bin
- Open Recycle Bin from the desktop or Start search.
- Switch to Details view and sort by original location or deletion date.
- Select the files or folders, right-click, and choose Restore.
Windows returns an item to its original folder. If the Recycle Bin is empty, the item is absent, or the cleanup operation bypassed the bin, move to the next option rather than repeatedly using the affected drive.

2. Check the OneDrive web recycle bin
Sign in to OneDrive in a browser and open the Recycle bin. This web bin is essential for cloud-only files, which may never have had a complete local copy and therefore may not appear in Windows Recycle Bin.
- Personal OneDrive accounts generally retain deleted items for 30 days.
- Work or school accounts generally retain them for 93 days, unless an administrator configured a different period.
- Select the item and choose Restore. It returns to its former OneDrive location.
- An item permanently deleted from the OneDrive recycle bin cannot be restored from that bin.
If the file is visible online but missing locally, verify that OneDrive is running, the correct account is signed in, and the folder has finished syncing. A cloud icon or “online-only” status means the content may need an internet connection and enough free disk space before it can be downloaded again.
3. Restore an earlier version with File History
File History can recover a previous version only if it was enabled and had already captured the folder. It is useful when a cleanup removed a file from a backed-up user folder, or when a damaged current copy needs replacing with an earlier one.

- Right-click the folder and choose Restore previous versions.
- Select a dated version and use the preview controls to confirm its contents.
- Choose Restore to put it back in the original location, or choose Restore to another location to avoid replacing current files.
Microsoft warns that a direct replacement cannot be undone. Restoring to a new folder is safer when you are unsure which version is correct or when the original folder now contains newer work.
Use Windows File Recovery for local files with no backup
Windows File Recovery is Microsoft’s Microsoft Store command-line app for attempting to recover files deleted from local internal, external, or USB storage after the Recycle Bin cannot help. It does not recover files from cloud storage or network file shares. It also cannot restore data that has already been overwritten.
Requirements and destination rules
- Install Windows File Recovery from the Microsoft Store before running it.
- The source and destination must be different drives. For example, recover from
C:toE:, not fromC:back toC:. - If the PC has only one internal drive, connect a USB or external drive for the recovered output. The drive itself does not recover anything; it simply provides separate space.
- Ensure the destination has enough capacity for the files you expect to recover. The required space depends on the amount of output, not on a fixed Windows quota.
- When recovering from the Windows operating-system drive, use file or folder filters to limit scanning and reduce unnecessary writes.
Select the mode from the file system and deletion age
| Situation | Recommended mode | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Recently deleted files on an NTFS drive | /regular |
Microsoft’s starting point for recent NTFS deletions. |
| Older NTFS deletion | /extensive |
Designed for cases where a simple recent-file scan is less likely to find the data. |
| Formatted or corrupted NTFS drive | /extensive |
Use the broader scan for damaged or reformatted NTFS volumes. |
| FAT or exFAT drive | /extensive |
Microsoft recommends Extensive for these file systems. |
| Uncertain file system or circumstances | Start with /regular when appropriate, then Extensive |
Microsoft advises starting with Regular if you are unsure, provided the drive is a recent NTFS case. |

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe source and destination letters must identify different drives. Microsoft’s examples include recovering a Documents folder from C: to E: with Regular mode, and using Extensive mode with a file-name fragment. Follow the current in-app or Microsoft support syntax for the exact path and filter switches for your Windows version.
A typical workflow is:
- Connect and confirm the destination drive letter in File Explorer.
- Identify the original folder and, if possible, part of the file name or its extension.
- Run Windows File Recovery with the source, destination, mode, and a narrow folder or name filter.
- Let the scan finish without using the source drive for other work.
- Open the destination and inspect the automatically created
Recovery_<date and time>folder. - Copy verified files from that recovery folder to a separate working location and open them to check that they are intact.
Do not assume a successful command means every file is usable. Recovered files may have generic names, missing metadata, or partial contents. Do not repeatedly scan while saving results onto the source drive; that can reduce the chance of finding data in a later attempt.

What Storage Sense and Disk Cleanup may have changed
Storage Sense
Storage Sense can remove items from the Recycle Bin according to its configured age and can clean temporary content automatically. That can explain why a file is no longer in the bin. However, Microsoft distinguishes cloud behavior: OneDrive content made online-only to save space is not permanently deleted by that setting. Once the computer is connected and has sufficient free space, the content can be made locally available again.
Open Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense to review the configured cleanup rules. Do not change settings by guessing while you are still trying to preserve recoverable data; first copy any files you can restore.

Disk Cleanup presents categories and requires confirmation before deleting them. One category needs special care: Previous Windows Installation(s). Removing it deletes the Windows.old folder and removes the option to return to the previous Windows version. That rollback path is separate from ordinary file undelete; deleting Windows.old does not explain or restore personal files stored elsewhere.

If the missing material was actually inside Windows.old, recovery means locating the needed files before that folder was removed or using a backup. If Disk Cleanup removed other local files and no backup remains, use the Windows File Recovery decision above rather than treating Windows.old as a general recovery store.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The file is not in either Recycle Bin
Confirm whether it was cloud-only, removed by an automatic bin policy, stored on a network share, or permanently deleted. Check File History and other backups. If it was on a local drive, stop using that drive and attempt Windows File Recovery with a separate destination.
Windows File Recovery reports no usable results
Verify the source and destination letters, confirm that the source is a supported local drive, and check the file-system choice. Try a narrower folder or name filter first; if the deletion was older, the drive was formatted or corrupted, or it uses FAT/exFAT, use Extensive mode. Continued computer use may already have overwritten the deleted space, and no command can recover data that no longer exists on the media.
The recovered file will not open
Copy it to a safe working folder, check its size and extension, and try another recovered copy if several were produced. A file with the right name can still be incomplete. If every copy is damaged and no backup exists, professional recovery may be the only remaining avenue, with no guarantee of success.
Prevent a cleanup mistake from becoming permanent
- Keep File History or another independent backup enabled for folders that matter.
- Periodically verify that backups contain files you can actually open.
- Review Storage Sense’s Recycle Bin and temporary-file rules before enabling automatic cleanup.
- Keep enough free space for backups and, if possible, a separate USB or external recovery destination.
- For OneDrive, learn where the web recycle bin is and which retention policy applies to your account.
- Before deleting Previous Windows Installation(s), make sure you no longer need rollback to the prior Windows version.
Bottom line
Start with the least destructive option: Recycle Bin, OneDrive web recycle bin, then File History or another backup. For files deleted from supported local storage with no backup, stop writing to the source drive, choose the Windows File Recovery mode that matches the file system and deletion circumstances, and save results to a different physical drive. The sooner you reduce disk activity, the better the odds, but Windows recovery remains an attempt rather than a certainty.
