Photograph the message, preserve your sale and payment records, verify the company independently, and ask both the seller and the named rental company for a written explanation and proof of their claim. If they cannot resolve the dispute, escalate through your state consumer-protection office or attorney general and report suspected fraud to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). In the United States, your rights depend on the transaction documents and the law of your state.
What a rental-company lock means
A lock that names a rental, lease-to-own, or rent-to-own business usually comes from device-management software installed before the computer reached you. It may be designed to disable a machine when an account is delinquent, a device is reported lost or stolen, or a rental contract is allegedly breached. The lock screen itself does not prove that the company owns the computer, that you owe the company money, or that the seller had the right to sell it.

The FTC documented this capability in historical rent-to-own computer cases. In a September 2012 announcement, the agency said software licensed to rent-to-own stores included a “kill switch” that could disable a computer reported stolen or when a renter failed to make timely payments: FTC Halts Computer Spying. In its complaint against J.A.G. Rents, the FTC alleged that PC Rental Agent could disable a rented PC after a late payment, loss of communication, a lost-or-stolen report, or another alleged contract violation: FTC complaint. Those were allegations concerning a named company and software in 2012, not proof that the same software is installed on your computer or that every rental company uses such systems today.

In 2013, the FTC approved final orders restricting monitoring, undisclosed location tracking, and deceptive information collection in cases involving named respondents: FTC final-order announcement. That history is a reason to treat an unfamiliar prompt cautiously; it is not evidence that your particular lock is spying on you.

First, identify which kind of lock you are seeing
Rental or lease-management lock
A third-party lock normally names a business, displays a payment or case reference, or provides a phone number, URL, or demand for action. It can appear before Windows loads, inside Windows, or as a full-screen message. Record every visible detail, but do not assume the displayed contact information is genuine until you verify it elsewhere.
Microsoft Find My Device
Microsoft’s Find My Device is a separate Windows feature for locating and remotely locking an owner’s own device. Microsoft says it must have been enabled in advance and requires the owner to sign in with a personal Microsoft account and an administrator account. Its documented process is described at Find and lock a lost Windows device. A screen that identifies a rental company is not the documented Find My Device workflow, and Microsoft’s instructions do not promise to remove a third party’s rental lock.
Preserve evidence before changing anything
Evidence can disappear if you reset, reinstall, or continue experimenting with the computer. Use your phone or another trusted device to make copies.
- Photograph or screenshot the complete lock screen, including the company name, telephone number, web address, error or case number, serial number, and any payment demand.
- Save the original sales listing, seller profile, invoices, receipts, payment confirmations, marketplace messages, shipping records, and delivery photographs.
- Record the computer’s make, model, serial number, service tag, and any asset or rental sticker. Photograph labels rather than relying on memory.
- Keep copies in cloud storage or on a separate device that is not connected to the locked computer.
- Write a timeline: when you bought it, when it arrived, when you first used it, and when the lock appeared. Note whether you changed hardware, connected it to a network, or installed updates immediately before the message.
Do not wipe the drive while a title or fraud dispute is open. A reset could destroy logs, files, or proof of how the lock appeared and may make a later investigation harder.

Do not give credentials to an unverified prompt
Do not type Microsoft, email, banking, workplace, or password-manager credentials into the lock screen. Do not call only the number shown in the message or click only its link. Find the company’s official contact information through a separate, trusted source, such as a statement you already received, a verified corporate filing, or a website address you type independently. Compare the spelling of domains and ask the representative to identify the serial number and account details without asking you to disclose passwords.
The FTC’s historical complaint described fake software-registration prompts that gathered contact information. That does not establish that every rental-company message is malicious, but it makes independent verification essential. A legitimate representative should be able to explain why the serial number is in the company’s records and what document or account supports the claim.
Contact the seller in writing
Send a factual message through the marketplace or payment channel and, if available, by email or certified mail. Ask questions that create a clear record:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Where did the seller obtain the computer?
- Was it rented, leased, financed, or subject to a buyout?
- Was the underlying account paid in full before the sale?
- What document shows that the seller had authority to transfer ownership?
- Did the seller know about any management software or outstanding claim?
Attach a copy of the receipt and a photograph of the lock, but redact unrelated personal information. Set a reasonable deadline for a written response. If the seller cannot establish the right to transfer the computer, request a refund through the original payment or marketplace process. Keep every reply, including refusals, changing explanations, and requests that you pay a debt you never agreed to.

Contact the named rental company through verified channels
After independently confirming the company’s identity, provide the serial number and proof of your purchase. Ask the company to answer in writing:
- Is the serial number in its inventory or account records?
- Why was the device locked, and on what date?
- What contract, account, loss report, or other document supports the action?
- Does the company claim ownership, a security interest, a right to repossess, or something else?
- What process is available to release the lock or resolve a competing ownership claim?
Do not agree to pay another person’s rental balance simply to make the screen disappear. Before paying, review the sale documents, ask what legal obligation you would be assuming, and obtain the proposed resolution in writing. A company’s willingness to unlock a device does not by itself establish that its ownership claim was valid.
Review the transaction and any rental contract
Rent-to-own and lease-to-own arrangements are governed by contracts. FTC consumer guidance explains that missing a payment can result in losing the item and money already paid, and recommends keeping the contract and payment records: Buy Now, Pay Later, Rent-to-Own, Lease-to-Own, and Layaway. That guidance concerns the original customer’s agreement. It does not determine what happens when a later buyer purchases a used computer without seeing that contract.

Collect the original agreement if the seller or rental company provides it, plus payment histories, payoff or buyout documents, transfer forms, and any notice of default. Check whether the document describes transfer restrictions, a security interest, a return obligation, or a release after final payment. The legal effect of those clauses depends on the exact language, the transaction type, and the state where the deal occurred. Do not make a definitive ownership or repossession decision from the lock screen alone.

Escalate when direct contact fails
There are two practical routes: continue a documented resolution with the seller and rental company, or seek an independent consumer-protection review. They serve different purposes.
| Route | Best use | Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seller and rental company | Clarifying the serial number, account, sale history, and release process | Fastest chance of obtaining the company’s own explanation or an unlock | Neither party is an independent decision-maker, and a seller may be unresponsive |
| State consumer-protection office or attorney general | Complaints about deceptive sales, unfair practices, or an unresolved business dispute | Independent intake and possible referral or enforcement review | It may not decide title or force an immediate release |
| FTC | Suspected scams, deceptive communications, or patterns affecting consumers | Creates a federal complaint record and helps identify broader conduct | Individual complaints do not guarantee a refund or device release |
| Consumer-law attorney | Individual advice on title, contract rights, damages, or litigation | Can analyze the documents and jurisdiction-specific remedies | Fees and suitability vary; the facts may not justify paid representation |
| Law enforcement | Evidence of theft, forged records, identity theft, or deliberate fraud | Appropriate for potential crimes rather than ordinary contract disputes | Police may treat a civil ownership dispute as outside their role |
USAGov recommends first trying to resolve an online-purchase complaint with the seller or website, then contacting a state consumer-protection office or attorney general when that fails. It lists the FTC for scams and suspicious communications: Where to file a complaint about an online purchase. The FTC’s rent-to-own guidance also directs consumers with a bad business experience to ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Include your timeline, copies of the listing and receipt, the lock photographs, serial number, and all written responses.
Secure accounts if you entered information
If you typed a password, email address, payment detail, or other credential into the lock screen, act from a different trusted device. Change the affected password first, then change any other account that reused it. Prioritize your email account because it can reset other services, followed by financial, shopping, workplace, and cloud-storage accounts. Enable multifactor authentication, review sign-in history, revoke unfamiliar sessions, and contact your bank or card issuer if payment information was entered. Preserve the suspicious screen and messages before deleting them; they may be useful to the seller, a regulator, or law enforcement.
What not to do
- Do not search for or install software advertised as a way to defeat the rental lock.
- Do not modify firmware, remove management components, or access the rental company’s systems without authorization.
- Do not repeatedly guess passwords or payment details on the lock screen.
- Do not send an original identity document, full bank statement, or unrelated personal records to an unverified address.
- Do not publicly post the computer’s full serial number or your complete purchase paperwork.
- Do not assume a factory reset proves ownership or will remove a lock that operates outside Windows.
A repair shop can diagnose hardware only if you authorize it, but no accessory, replacement drive, or generic recovery tool establishes title or resolves a company’s claim. Keep the dispute focused on records, verification, and a documented release.

When professional help is justified
A state consumer-protection office is a sensible first referral when the seller misrepresented the computer or refuses to respond. A consumer-law attorney becomes more useful when the amount is substantial, the rental company threatens repossession or collection, the documents conflict, or you need advice about title and remedies in a particular state. Contact law enforcement when you have concrete evidence of theft, forged documents, identity theft, or intentional fraud rather than merely a disagreement over a contract.
Bring a concise file: purchase agreement, payment proof, listing, messages, serial-number photographs, lock screenshots, the rental company’s written response, and a dated timeline. Ask what the professional can and cannot do before paying a fee. No general service can guarantee that a device will be released without reviewing the transaction and applicable law.
Buying another used PC safely
Before paying for a used business or rental-origin computer, ask the seller for the serial number, an ownership or payoff document, and a written statement that no rental, lease, financing, or management claim remains. Test the machine while connected to the internet, inspect startup screens for organization or rental branding, and confirm that the seller will provide a refund if a third party later locks it. Pay through a method with a dispute process, retain the listing, and avoid deals where the seller refuses to identify the source of the device.

These precautions cannot guarantee that a hidden claim will never appear, but they give you evidence and a practical remedy if it does.
Quick Recap
Key points to remember
- A rental-company lock is technically possible; FTC records document historical remote-disablement tools, but they do not establish who owns your computer or whether a current lock is lawful.
- The seller’s authority to sell and any outstanding rental or financing claim must be checked against documents and state law.
- A third-party rental lock is different from Microsoft Find My Device, which requires prior setup and the owner’s Microsoft account.
- Preserve the screen and transaction records, and never enter credentials into an unverified prompt.
- Use the seller and company for a documented explanation, then state consumer authorities, the FTC, an attorney, or law enforcement as the facts warrant.
