If a UK court order has frozen your bank account or placed a restriction on your property, first identify the exact order, the court and case number, its deadline, and whether it is interim or final. Do not transfer assets or ignore the restrictions. A bank freeze, charging order and wider freezing injunction have different effects and different response routes. The guidance below focuses on England and Wales, with separate cautions for Scotland and Northern Ireland.
“Frozen” can mean several different court orders
Banks and property owners often use “frozen” as shorthand, but it is not a precise legal category. Read the document you received and copy down its exact title, court, case number, date, hearing date and operative terms. If your bank says an account is restricted but you have not seen an order, ask the bank what legal notice it received and request the court and case details. A bank restriction is not necessarily a court order.

| Order | What it normally does | What happens next |
|---|---|---|
| Interim third-party debt order | Freezes money held for the debtor by a third party, commonly a bank or building society. | The court considers objections and decides whether to make a final order. |
| Final third-party debt order | Directs the bank or other third party to pay the creditor from money covered by the order. | The specified sum is paid according to the final order; any remaining dispute follows the court’s directions. |
| Charging order | Secures a judgment debt against property such as a house or land. | The charge remains against the property record. Payment commonly occurs when the property is sold, unless another arrangement or order applies. |
| Freezing or proprietary injunction | Restricts dealing with specified assets. The wording may cover bank funds, property or other assets. | The injunction’s terms control. A party may need an urgent application to vary or discharge it. |
These categories matter because an interim bank order is not a final decision to pay, and a charging order is not normally an immediate order to sell a home. A joint account, co-owner or another person claiming an interest can also change the issues the court must decide.

The detailed third-party debt and charging-order material discussed here is England-and-Wales guidance. Citizens Advice’s practical bank-freeze guidance is marked for England. Scotland has different procedures and time-to-pay routes, and the material available for this article does not establish a comprehensive Northern Ireland process.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- England and Wales: use the court named on the order and the directions supplied with it. HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) materials describe the civil-enforcement process.
- Scotland: do not assume an England-and-Wales form, deadline or hardship route applies. Obtain Scottish advice and follow the Scottish court or enforcement instructions.
- Northern Ireland: obtain Northern Ireland-specific advice and contact the court named on the document; do not infer the procedure from an England-and-Wales order.
The court and case number printed on the order are the safest starting point. If the document is missing pages or the bank gives you only a reference, ask the court office how to obtain the complete order.
If your bank account is frozen by an interim third-party debt order
1. Read the order and preserve the deadline
Confirm that the document says “third-party debt order” and whether it is interim. Note the hearing date, the amount claimed, the account or bank identified, and every instruction about evidence or service. An interim order generally prevents access to the affected money while the court decides whether a final order should be made. Do not move, hide or withdraw funds in a way that would breach the order. If the wording is unclear, obtain urgent advice rather than guessing what is permitted.
2. Work out whether the money is actually yours
HMCTS describes this procedure as applying to money held for the judgment debtor. A joint account can raise a separate ownership dispute: the court may need evidence about whose money is in the account and in what proportions. Gather only relevant records, such as statements showing deposits, salary or benefit payments, and any agreement or evidence explaining another account holder’s interest. Tell the court and creditor promptly if the order appears to target funds that belong to someone else.

HMCTS guidance says objections should be filed as written evidence at least three days before the hearing, with copies sent to the court and the creditor. The objector is expected to attend the hearing. The actual order can set an earlier date or additional directions, so follow those instructions if they are stricter.

Your evidence should address the specific reason you object, identify the account or sum concerned, and attach documents that prove the point. Do not use a general letter that merely says the freeze is inconvenient. A solicitor, law centre or advice agency can help determine whether the facts support an objection and how to present it.
4. Attend the hearing
The court may make a final order, discharge the interim order and dismiss the application, resolve a dispute about the money, or direct a further trial of an issue. Bring your filed evidence, proof of service, identification and any updated documents requested in the directions. Missing the hearing can leave the court deciding on the material already before it.
Can you get money released for rent, food or other essentials?
If the freeze leaves an individual unable to meet ordinary living expenses, a hardship payment order may be available in England and Wales where the third party is a bank or building society. HMCTS says the debtor can ask for release of a single amount or specified sums over a period, but must prove that they and their family cannot meet daily living expenses.

- recent bank statements for affected and essential accounts;
- income information, including wages, benefits or pensions;
- rent or mortgage costs;
- utility bills, council tax, food and necessary travel costs;
- evidence of dependants or exceptional household needs; and
- a short calculation showing the sum required and the period it should cover.
Use documents relevant to the application rather than sending an unstructured archive of personal records. Explain what will happen without the payment—for example, an imminent rent shortfall or inability to buy food—and keep the figures consistent with the statements you provide. A hardship application does not automatically cancel the order or guarantee release of all funds.
Where to get help
HMCTS directs people with legal issues to an advice agency, law centre or solicitor. Citizens Advice England also explains the hardship route in practical terms. Ask any adviser to confirm that they cover the nation and court involved; a general article cannot decide whether your evidence meets the legal test.
If the account freeze has become a final order
An interim order holds the money while the court considers the application. A final third-party debt order can direct the bank to pay the creditor from the frozen amount. Check the final order for the precise sum, payment direction and any treatment of money above that sum. If the court made the order without resolving a dispute about ownership, follow its directions for challenging or trying that issue rather than treating the bank’s action as the end of every possible remedy.

If a charging order affects your house or land
What a charging order does
A charging order places security for a judgment debt against property. It normally does not require you to sell immediately or produce payment on the day it is made. If the property is later sold, the charge is usually paid from the sale proceeds. Earlier registered charges, such as a mortgage, generally take priority.
Interim and final charging orders
Read whether the order is interim or final and follow the hearing, evidence and service instructions. An interim order may be considered at a later hearing before the court decides whether to make it final. Provide evidence about matters that the order specifically asks the court to consider, including any co-owner’s interest or a dispute about the judgment debt.
Do you have to sell your home?
Not merely because a charging order exists. A creditor may in some circumstances seek a separate order for sale, which is a distinct and serious step. Treat any application or notice seeking sale as a new deadline requiring immediate advice. Do not assume that paying one instalment automatically removes the charge; removal depends on the order, payment evidence and the court or land-registration record.

Co-owners and an imminent sale
If another person owns the property, lives there, or claims an interest in the equity, tell the court and obtain advice about that person’s rights. If a sale or remortgage is already planned, give the conveyancer the complete order and ask how the charge will be dealt with. The amount available after mortgages and other priority charges may differ from the judgment balance.

If the document is a freezing or proprietary injunction
A broader freezing or proprietary injunction is not the same as routine judgment enforcement. Its wording determines which assets are restricted, whether ordinary expenditure is permitted, what notice must be given before dealing with assets, and which disclosure obligations apply.
“Anyone served with or notified of this order may apply to the court at any time to vary or discharge this order.”

This provision describes a possible application, not an automatic suspension. Until the court changes the injunction, comply with its terms. Do not transfer assets, open replacement accounts, sell property, or rely on a variation application as permission to act. Because breaches can have serious consequences, contact a solicitor experienced in civil injunctions urgently and use the court and case details printed on the order.
Common mistakes that make the position worse
- Assuming every bank restriction is a court order: obtain the legal reference and full document first.
- Confusing interim and final status: the hearing for an interim third-party debt order is the opportunity to put evidence before the court before a final payment direction.
- Missing the evidence deadline: HMCTS guidance refers to at least three days before the hearing, but your order may require earlier filing.
- Ignoring a co-owner: joint-account money and jointly owned property can involve another person’s rights.
- Trying to defeat the order by moving assets: obtain advice and comply unless and until the court varies the restriction.
- Expecting a charging order to disappear after a private payment: obtain written confirmation and follow the court’s removal process.
- Using the wrong nation’s procedure: Scotland and Northern Ireland should not be treated as if they use the same forms and deadlines as England and Wales.
A document-and-deadline checklist
- Photograph or scan every page of the order and any covering notice.
- Record the court, case number, order type, date made, hearing date and filing deadline.
- Ask the bank or conveyancer exactly what restriction it has applied and to which account or title.
- List urgent consequences, such as food, rent, mortgage, utilities, payroll or an imminent property completion.
- Collect focused evidence: statements, income, essential bills, ownership documents and proof of earlier payments.
- Send objections or hardship evidence exactly as the order directs, including copies for the creditor where required.
- Attend the hearing or arrange authorised representation; keep proof of every filing and delivery.
- Use a solicitor, law centre or advice agency for questions about merits, injunction compliance, co-ownership or a possible sale.
What to expect after you respond
The court may release some or all money, confirm a final payment direction, discharge an interim application, resolve an ownership issue, or give further directions. A charging order may remain as security even while you negotiate payment. An injunction may be varied only by a further court decision. Keep following the current order until you have written confirmation that it has changed, and provide any updated payment or financial information the court requests.
Where to start today
Use the court named on the document, not a generic internet form, as your first procedural reference. HMCTS materials explain the England-and-Wales enforcement routes, and Citizens Advice can help with practical hardship questions in England. For Scotland, seek Scottish advice; for Northern Ireland, obtain local guidance from the named court or a Northern Ireland adviser. A court order’s exact wording, your jurisdiction, its interim or final status, the next deadline, and any other person’s interest determine the correct response.
