If your teen is turning to ChatGPT for comfort, start with curiosity rather than a ban. Ask what the conversations provide, listen for unmet needs, explain what an AI chatbot cannot do, and help rebuild dependable human support. Heavy use alone is not a diagnosis, but withdrawing from people, losing hours to the chatbot, distress when it is unavailable, or using it for serious mental-health problems warrants a closer check-in and possibly professional care.
Start with a calm, curious conversation
The first response can determine whether your teen tells you what is really happening. An accusation such as “You are addicted to ChatGPT” or an immediate confiscation of the device may push the conversations out of sight. Instead, treat the use as information about what your teen needs.

The CDC’s guidance on connecting conversations says open communication helps teenagers feel freer to express feelings and ideas. Associated Press reporting on expert advice likewise recommends asking which apps a teenager uses and what is appealing about them. Choose a neutral moment rather than starting during an argument or immediately after discovering a chat.
Questions that invite an answer
- “What do you like about talking with ChatGPT?”
- “What kinds of things do you usually discuss?”
- “When you are having a hard day, what does it help you do?”
- “Is it easier to talk there because it is private, always available, or less judgmental?”
- “Who else would you feel safe talking with about the same problem?”
- “Has it ever said something that made you feel worse, confused, or more worried?”
Then listen without interrupting to correct the teen’s interpretation of the chatbot. The attraction may be convenience, privacy, help finding words, rehearsal for a difficult conversation, or relief from loneliness. Knowing the function of the chats gives you a better way to meet the need than simply removing access. Do not assume that frequent use proves a disorder or that the teen is being deceptive.

Explain what ChatGPT can—and cannot—provide
ChatGPT generates text that resembles a conversation. It does not know your teen as a person, observe the full situation, verify every fact, or carry responsibility for the teen’s safety. A fluent, warm answer is not the same as human understanding.
The American Psychological Association (APA) warns that adolescents may have difficulty distinguishing simulated empathy from genuine understanding. A teenager can experience the response as deeply caring even though the system has no feelings, personal relationship, or lived knowledge of the teen. The APA also cautions that relationships with chatbots can displace relationships in the real world and that young people may be vulnerable to influence from AI characters or tools.
Make the distinction concrete rather than shaming:
- “It can help organize thoughts or suggest questions, but it cannot know everything going on in your life.”
- “It may sound certain and still be wrong.”
- “It cannot assess your safety the way a trained professional or trusted adult can.”
- “A person who knows you can notice changes, ask follow-up questions, and stay with you.”
General-purpose generative AI is not a substitute for licensed mental-health care and is not a reliable diagnostic tool. The APA’s guidance notes that such systems lack the qualifications needed for care, including a complete history, personal context, and clinical risk assessment. A chatbot should not be used to decide whether a teen has depression, an anxiety disorder, an eating disorder, trauma-related illness, or another condition.

Separate supplemental use from replacement use
Not every emotional conversation with a chatbot is harmful. The important question is what role it plays and what happens to human support.
| Use pattern | Human oversight | Understanding and safety | Effect on relationships |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low-stakes supplement | A teen uses it alongside a trusted adult, friend, school counselor, or clinician. | It may brainstorm, help name feelings, or prepare questions, but a person checks important decisions. | Use makes it easier to start or continue real conversations. |
| Primary emotional outlet | The teen hides distress from people or treats the chatbot as the only confidant. | The system cannot reliably understand history, context, or clinical risk and may give inaccurate or unsuitable advice. | Time and trust shift away from family, friends, school support, or treatment. |
For a teen already seeing a clinician, encourage an honest discussion about chatbot use. The APA says AI might sometimes help a patient practice therapeutic homework learned from a human professional, but users should think critically about AI coaching and raise outside-session use with the provider. The clinician can clarify what is appropriate for that teen and correct advice that conflicts with treatment.
How can I tell if ChatGPT is replacing real relationships?
Look for a pattern over time, not one isolated conversation. The Associated Press reported expert guidance from Common Sense Media researcher Michael Robb identifying several warning patterns. These are reasons to check in and consider more support; they are not validated screening criteria or a diagnosis.

- Withdrawal: The teen increasingly chooses the chatbot over friends, family, activities, or previously valued relationships.
- Large amounts of time: Conversations consume hours, interfere with sleep, schoolwork, meals, exercise, or responsibilities, or continue despite clear negative effects.
- Distress when unavailable: The teen becomes unusually anxious, angry, panicked, or unable to cope when the service, phone, or internet is unavailable.
- Serious problems handled only by the chatbot: The teen relies on it for suicidal thoughts, self-harm, abuse, severe eating concerns, substance use, or another situation requiring human assessment.
- Secrecy combined with impairment: Concealment by itself does not prove danger, but secrecy together with declining functioning or isolation deserves a direct, compassionate conversation.
Ask what changed, when the use increased, and what the teen was trying to manage. Keep your focus on sleep, safety, functioning, and connection rather than on a particular number of messages.

Collaborative limits are more likely to work than rules imposed without explanation. Agree on the purpose of the tool, times when it is put away, and what requires a human response.
Useful boundaries to discuss
- Use ChatGPT for low-stakes brainstorming, journaling prompts, or preparing to ask a trusted person for help—not as the only outlet for distress.
- Do not enter another person’s private information or share sensitive details that are unnecessary for the task.
- Pause chatbot use during meals, family conversations, schoolwork, and an agreed bedtime so offline routines remain protected.
- If a response concerns safety, medication, diagnosis, abuse, or a major decision, show it to a trusted adult or qualified professional instead of acting on it alone.
- Keep at least one dependable human contact available: a parent, relative, school counselor, coach, doctor, therapist, or another adult the teen chooses.
- Review the plan together after a week or two. Adjust it based on sleep, mood, functioning, and whether the teen is reaching out to people.
Offer an alternative that serves the same purpose. If the teen uses the chatbot to find words, help draft a text to a counselor. If privacy is the draw, identify a confidential professional service or private time to talk. If loneliness is central, plan a low-pressure activity with a trusted person rather than demanding immediate socializing.

When to involve a mental-health professional
If the conversations reveal persistent sadness, anxiety, hopelessness, panic, self-harm, eating changes, trauma, substance use, sleep disruption, school impairment, or major conflict, arrange a professional evaluation. A primary-care clinician or pediatrician can help determine next steps and refer to an appropriate licensed provider.
The CDC describes psychological therapy as treatment for mental-health conditions and a way to teach coping skills. Therapy is not a punishment for using ChatGPT. Frame it as additional human support: “You deserve someone who can understand the whole situation and work with you over time.” Adolescents may work directly with a therapist while caregivers remain involved by supporting the therapeutic relationship, attending when requested, helping with logistics, and noticing changes.

Ask the teen what kind of support feels acceptable. Some may prefer starting with a doctor, school counselor, or therapist who shares a relevant background. Respecting reasonable preferences can improve engagement without leaving the teen solely responsible for finding care.

Ask directly about immediate safety
If your teen mentions wanting to die, self-harm, being unable to stay safe, or another immediate danger, ask plainly and calmly what they mean and whether they have a plan or access to a means. A direct question does not plant the idea; it clarifies urgency.
Stay with the teen or keep them connected to a trusted adult while you obtain help. In the United States, call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. If there is imminent danger, a suicide attempt, a serious injury, or an immediate threat from another person, call local emergency services. Outside the United States, use your country’s emergency number or crisis service. Do not leave an acutely unsafe teen alone and do not rely on ChatGPT to manage the crisis.
Understand the limits of parental controls
OpenAI’s current Help Center information says eligible under-18 accounts receive ChatGPT for Teens with age-appropriate protections and optional parental controls. Those controls can manage selected settings, but they do not let a parent read or monitor the teen’s conversations. Product settings therefore cannot substitute for a relationship in which a teen can disclose distress.

It is not an emergency service, crisis-response system, or replacement for mental-health care, so it should not be presented as a teen safety solution.
An Associated Press report published October 7, 2026, described a Common Sense Media evaluation that found some ChatGPT for Teens safeguards—including certain alerts and crisis-support behavior—did not work as intended in its testing. OpenAI disputed the methodology and said much of the testing may have occurred before parental-control activation was complete. Treat this as a contested evaluation, not proof that every safeguard fails or that the product guarantees safety. In either case, parents should use controls as one layer of a broader safety plan, not as surveillance or clinical protection.
A simple response plan for caregivers
- Choose a calm opening. Mention what you noticed without exaggeration: “I have seen you using ChatGPT a lot when things feel hard, and I want to understand.”
- Listen for the need. Ask what the teen discusses, what feels helpful, and what feels difficult or risky. Reflect the answer before offering advice.
- Check functioning and safety. Ask about sleep, school, relationships, mood, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and whether the teen can cope when the chatbot is unavailable.
- Explain the limits. Say that generated empathy is simulated, answers can be wrong, and the tool cannot diagnose or assess danger.
- Build a human-support option. Identify one trusted person and one professional or school-based route if concerns are significant.
- Agree on boundaries. Define low-stakes uses, protected offline times, and the situations that require contacting a person immediately.
- Follow up. Revisit the conversation soon rather than treating one talk as a complete solution. Escalate to professional care when distress or impairment persists.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Beginning with a ban: This can remove a coping outlet before another one exists and make disclosure less likely.
- Reading every conversation without consent or a clear safety reason: It may damage trust and still cannot replace clinical assessment. Discuss privacy and safety expectations openly.
- Calling the teen addicted: Heavy use is a behavior to understand, not a diagnosis established by message volume.
- Arguing about whether the chatbot “cares”: Acknowledge that the responses feel supportive while explaining why simulated empathy has limits.
- Using the chatbot to diagnose the teen: Bring symptoms and questions to a qualified clinician.
- Waiting for a perfect warning sign: A combination of isolation, impairment, distress, or safety concerns is enough to seek advice.
The goal is stronger human support
Your teen may have found a fast, private way to put difficult feelings into words. That need is real even when the tool is not an adequate source of care. A non-shaming conversation, clear boundaries, protected offline relationships, and timely professional help can preserve what is useful about low-stakes assistance while preventing the chatbot from becoming the teen’s only lifeline.
