First check the transaction on an explorer for the network it actually used. A wallet label such as “pending,” a failed bridge transfer, and a confirmed on-chain transaction are different situations—and each has different next steps. A confirmed transfer is generally irreversible, so verify the status and destination before trying anything else.
What to check before taking action
Find the transaction in the sending wallet, exchange, or bridge. Record the transaction hash (TxID), token, amount, sending and receiving addresses, network, displayed status, and relevant timestamps. Open the transaction using an explorer for that exact network; a wallet or service status alone may not tell you whether the transfer was broadcast, confirmed, or failed.

- For a withdrawal from an exchange, check the withdrawal record and the exchange’s official status or support flow.
- For a bridge transfer, check the bridge’s record and the source and destination networks.
- For a transfer from a self-custody wallet, check the transaction on the network where it was submitted.
Do not send a second transfer until you have checked the first transaction’s actual result and confirmed the intended token, network, and destination.

A pending label does not necessarily mean the transfer failed. Network delays or insufficient confirmations can leave a transaction pending in a service’s interface. For example, Coinbase’s pending-transaction guidance describes causes and steps for Coinbase product flows; it is not a universal procedure for every wallet or exchange.

Self-custody wallet transaction
If the transaction is still unconfirmed, check whether the wallet offers a speed-up or cancellation option, and follow that wallet’s official instructions for the network you used. In MetaMask, a speed-up resubmits the transaction with a higher fee; a cancellation can only be attempted while the transaction remains pending. MetaMask’s instructions describe its own supported flows, and the current interface guidance notes limitations for certain networks and does not cover Mobile or Portfolio. Replacement and cancellation behavior depends on the wallet and network, may cost more, and is not a way to undo a transaction after it has been confirmed. Do not treat one wallet’s controls as universal.

Exchange withdrawal or transfer
Use the exchange’s displayed withdrawal status and official support process. An exchange may be able to explain its own processing or confirmation requirements, but do not assume a withdrawal can be canceled after it has been broadcast. Coinbase’s send and receive troubleshooting applies to Coinbase product flows.

If the transfer failed
Check the source wallet balance and the bridge or service’s displayed error before retrying. A failed bridge transaction is different from a delayed one. For USDC Bridge, Circle says that when a transfer fails, no USDC moved to the destination network and the funds remain in the source wallet. Follow the error guidance and, if the displayed status and balance do not reconcile, contact the bridge’s official support. If it succeeded but went to the wrong address
A confirmed on-chain transfer is generally final. Ethereum.org explains that a transaction sent on Ethereum is irreversible, and Circle states in its USDC wrong-address guidance: “Blockchain transactions can’t be reversed.” Circle also says it cannot reverse or retrieve a completed USDC Bridge transfer sent to the wrong address or network. You know who controls the address
Contact the recipient and ask whether they are willing and able to return the funds in a separate transaction. The original transfer cannot be recalled through your wallet.

The address belongs to an exchange or service
Contact that provider through its official support channel with the TxID, token, amount, network, and receiving address. The provider can assess its own records and policies, but recovery is not guaranteed. OKX, for example, says its ability to help with an irreversible on-chain withdrawal is limited and recovery commonly depends on communication with the recipient or platform; its guidance applies to its own process: OKX withdrawal-error guidance.
If you used the wrong network
Use the transaction record to identify the network actually used; do not infer it from the address format. For a wallet you control, the stablecoin may be visible after switching the wallet to the network where the transfer completed, if that wallet supports the token on that network. Circle describes this possibility for USDC in its wrong-address or network guidance.

If the destination is an exchange or other service, contact its support with the transaction details and ask whether it supports recovery for that exact asset and network. An address that looks the same across EVM-compatible networks does not mean the receiving platform supports the deposit on each one; crediting and recovery depend on that provider’s policies, the asset, network, account, and circumstances.
If you dispute the transfer as unauthorized
Distinguish an address or network mistake you made from activity you did not authorize. If you suspect that an account or wallet has been compromised, contact the provider promptly through a verified official channel, secure any remaining account access, and preserve the transaction details and relevant notices.
Some provider terms give specific instructions to particular customers. Circle’s USDC terms instruct Circle Mint users who believe a transaction was unauthorized or incorrectly carried out to notify Circle as soon as possible. That is guidance for Circle Mint users, not a general reversal or chargeback right for all stablecoin transfers. See Circle’s USDC Terms. The available remedies depend on the provider, account, jurisdiction, and facts; there is no universal dispute process or guaranteed remedy established for on-chain stablecoin transfers.
Keep evidence and avoid recovery scams
- Save the transaction hash or withdrawal TxID and the explorer link for the exact network.
- Record the token, amount, sending and receiving addresses, network, status, and relevant timestamps.
- For an exchange deposit, confirm that the receiving platform supports the exact token and network, then contact its official support with the transaction details.
- Reach providers by navigating to their official website or app. Do not trust unsolicited messages claiming they can recover the funds.
- Never share a seed phrase or private key. Ethereum.org warns that recovery scams commonly ask for seed phrases and says a legitimate service will not ask for one: Ethereum.org’s security guidance.
- Do not pay a purported recovery agent or make another transfer before checking the transaction state and destination.
Provider instructions can change and may be limited to a particular product, network, or account type. Follow the current guidance for the service involved rather than assuming that a procedure described for one wallet, exchange, bridge, or stablecoin applies elsewhere.
