Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf a special dividend is missing, first verify that you were entitled to it. Compare the issuer’s announced record date and payable date with the applicable ex-dividend date and your trade, transfer, and settlement records. If you held the shares through a brokerage, ask that broker or custodian to trace the corporate-action payment. If you held directly in registered form, contact the issuer’s transfer agent. A payable date alone does not establish that a particular account should receive the money.
Start with the entitlement check, not the missing balance
A special dividend can fail to appear for several different reasons: the account was not eligible, the payment is still being posted, the shares changed intermediaries, or the payment was issued by a different party than the one you contacted. Date and ownership records separate those possibilities.

This guide is primarily for U.S.-listed securities. Exchanges, settlement systems, tax rules, and complaint procedures differ by country, listing venue, security type, and account structure. Use the issuer’s corporate-action announcement and the rules of the market where the security trades as the controlling references for your event.
Collect the five event facts
- The exact issuer and security, including the listing venue and share class.
- Whether the distribution is cash, stock, or another form of corporate action.
- The per-share amount or number of shares announced.
- The record date and payable date.
- The applicable ex-dividend date, including any delayed ex-date stated by the exchange or issuer.
Do not infer a special dividend’s ex-date from the calendar used for the company’s ordinary quarterly dividend. The issuer sets the record date, while market rules determine the ex-dividend treatment.

Record date, ex-date, and payable date answer different questions
The record date is the issuer’s snapshot date for identifying holders in its records. The ex-dividend date is the market date that determines whether a trade carries the right to the distribution. The payable date is when the issuer intends to make the payment. A transaction can be on the record-date list yet require the payment to flow through an intermediary, or a trade can fall outside entitlement even though the buyer held the stock on the eventual payable date.
For an ordinary cash dividend, the general rule described by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov is: If you purchase a stock on its ex-dividend date or after, you will not receive the next dividend payment.
A purchase before the applicable ex-date is generally entitled; a purchase on or after it generally is not. The exact result still depends on the event terms, settlement history, and market rules.
Why a large special dividend can have a delayed ex-date
Investor.gov explains a special rule for a dividend worth 25% or more of the stock’s value: the ex-dividend date is deferred until one business day after the payment date. This is a rule threshold, not a prediction that every special dividend will use those dates. The delayed ex-date can affect trades made between the record date and payment date and can make a record-date-only analysis misleading.

Stock distributions and other non-cash corporate actions can follow different procedures. Fidelity’s corporate-actions FAQ notes that some special dividends or stock distributions have ex-dates after both the record and payment dates. Confirm the particular event with the issuer and the trading venue instead of applying one schedule to every “special dividend.”

Reconstruct your position around the event
Download account statements, trade confirmations, and transfer records covering the weeks around the announced dates. Build a simple timeline with the following entries:
- When you purchased the shares and the quantity on each fill.
- When you sold, transferred, or converted any portion of the position.
- The account or institution that held the position at each point.
- The relevant ex-date, record date, and payable date.
- The share quantity shown as eligible by the account statement or corporate-action notice.
Include settlement information where it is available. A trade date and a settlement date are not interchangeable, and a transfer can move the position between firms while the entitlement is being processed. If you bought on or after the applicable ex-date, the ordinary entitlement rule may mean no payment is due. If the distribution met the 25% threshold, ask the broker to apply the delayed ex-date rule announced for that event.
Sales, transfers, and due bills need a separate explanation
If you sold or moved the shares near the event, ask which intermediary received the issuer’s payment and how the transaction was treated under any due-bill arrangement. Nasdaq’s rules describe due-bill treatment for certain distributions: the right to the distribution can follow the trade for a specified period rather than remaining with the party that appears to have held the shares on a simple statement date.
That rulebook does not determine an individual account’s outcome without the event notice and transaction records. Request a transaction-level explanation rather than assuming the former broker or the current broker is automatically responsible.

Contact the party that maintains your ownership record
| How the shares were held | First contact | Ask the contact to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Street name through a brokerage, bank, or custodian | The broker or custodian shown on your statement | Eligibility, eligible share count, amount received from the issuer or depository, withholding, reinvestment election, posting status, and whether funds were routed to a prior institution |
| Directly registered shares | The issuer’s named transfer agent | Payment method, registered address or bank instructions, issue date, check status, and replacement procedure if applicable |
| Position moved between firms | Current broker first, then the prior broker or transfer agent identified in the trace | Which institution received the payment, the transfer date, and any due-bill or corporate-action adjustment |
Brokerage-held shares
In street name, the brokerage or custodian maintains the account-level ownership ledger. Investor.gov notes that broker dividend disbursements can be delayed, so a payable date does not guarantee that the cash will be visible immediately in every account. Ask the firm to open a corporate-action or dividend-payment investigation and to state whether the payment is pending, rejected, applied to another account, or not owed under the event terms.
CME Group’s investor FAQ likewise directs beneficial owners to their bank or broker for account-specific questions. Do not begin with the issuer’s transfer agent when the shares were held through a broker; the transfer agent generally cannot inspect the broker’s customer ledger.
Directly registered shares
For directly registered shares, the issuer or its transfer agent handles the payment instructions. Confirm the registered mailing address, bank details, chosen payment method, and whether a check or electronic payment was issued. Ask whether a payment was returned and what documentation is required for a replacement.
Recommended Free Tools
S&P Global’s investor FAQ gives an issuer-specific example of allowing a few days for mail delivery before reporting a missing check. Treat that as an example of one issuer’s process, not a universal waiting period. Follow the transfer agent’s stated instructions for your security.

Make the payment inquiry easy to investigate
Use the firm’s secure message center or other authenticated channel. Include enough information for the representative to match the event without exposing unnecessary personal data in ordinary email.
- Issuer name, ticker, share class, and listing venue.
- The announced cash or stock distribution and per-share amount.
- Record, ex-dividend, and payable dates, including the source of each date.
- Account number or case identifier through the firm’s secure channel.
- Trade dates, quantities, transfers, and the institution that held the position.
- A statement or confirmation showing the position around the relevant dates.
- Any election for cash, reinvestment, or another form of distribution.
Ask for the firm’s payment trace or corporate-action record, not merely a general balance explanation. Specifically request the eligible share count, gross amount, withholding or other deductions, net amount, receipt date from the issuer or depository, posting date, and destination account. If the representative says no payment is due, ask for the rule or transaction date used to reach that conclusion and request the explanation in writing.
Common outcomes and what to do next
The broker says the payment is pending
Ask for the expected posting status shown in its corporate-action system and the case number. Broker processing can involve an incoming payment, reconciliation of eligible positions, withholding calculations, and crediting customer subaccounts. Keep the statement showing the missing entry and check whether a later statement contains a separate adjustment.

Compare its stated ex-date and eligible share count with your trade confirmations. If you bought on or after the applicable ex-date, the conclusion may be correct under the ordinary rule. If the distribution was at least 25% of the stock’s value, ask whether the broker used the deferred ex-date announced for that event. If your records conflict, request a formal corporate-action review rather than relying on a verbal answer.
Best Value
The payment went to a previous institution
Provide the transfer date and old account statement. Ask the current broker to identify the paying intermediary or depository entry, then ask the previous institution to trace the payment under its old account number. Keep both case numbers so the firms can refer to the same event.
The broker cites a sale or due bill
Request the exact trade, settlement, and due-bill dates used in its decision. Ask which party was required to deliver the distribution and whether an adjustment should have been posted to your account. Nasdaq’s due-bill provisions are event-specific; a generic statement that you “sold before payment” does not explain the account treatment.
The transfer agent says a check was mailed
Confirm the address, mailing date, check number, payment amount, and whether the check was returned or has become stale. Follow the transfer agent’s replacement-check process. Do not assume that another issuer’s mail-delay period applies to this security.

Ask for the gross entitlement and every deduction separately. Withholding, tax documentation, reinvestment elections, fees permitted by the account agreement, or a partial eligible share count can make the net credit differ from the announced per-share amount. Reconcile the calculation using the eligible shares, not the total shares you own today.
Escalate only after the account-level trace is complete
First ask the broker, custodian, or transfer agent to escalate the case through its formal corporate-action or payment-complaint route. Keep the case number, secure messages, statements, confirmations, and the firm’s written conclusion.
There is no single escalation deadline or regulator complaint path that applies to every broker, security, account type, and country. If the firm does not resolve the discrepancy, identify the complaint channel and filing deadlines that apply to that institution and jurisdiction. A regulator or exchange can review a process issue, but it may still need the firm’s account records and the issuer’s event terms to determine entitlement.
A compact records checklist
- Issuer announcement or corporate-action notice.
- Record date, payable date, and applicable ex-dividend date.
- Trade confirmations and settlement details.
- Statements showing holdings before and after the event.
- Transfer or account-move documentation.
- Payment elections and tax forms, if relevant.
- Broker or transfer-agent case numbers and written responses.
- Any due-bill or adjustment explanation supplied by an intermediary.
These records let you test the three questions that decide most missing-payment cases: were you entitled under the event’s ex-date rules, which institution held the obligation when the shares moved, and what amount did the paying intermediary actually send?
