A wallet or RPC endpoint saying “sent” only confirms that a signed transaction was accepted for submission; it does not prove that the Solana cluster processed or confirmed it.
For an unconfirmed transaction, do not immediately submit a second transaction with the same economic effect. The original transaction may still execute while its recent blockhash is valid. Wait for that transaction to expire, or establish a definite failure, before rebuilding and signing a replacement.

Start by finding the transaction signature
Open the wallet’s activity, history, or transaction page and select the DeFi operation. Copy the complete transaction signature. Some interfaces label it a transaction ID. You need this value to query Solana directly or to open the transaction in a reputable explorer.

A signature is not a password. Nevertheless, never give anyone your recovery phrase, private key, or wallet approval code while asking for help. Someone who requests those credentials cannot legitimately “unstick” an on-chain transaction.

Do not rely on a notification such as “submitted,” “sent,” or “broadcast.” Solana’s sendTransaction RPC method can return a signature after an RPC accepts the signed transaction, while the cluster may not have processed or confirmed it. Solana Documentation states: “A successful response from this method does not guarantee the transaction is processed or confirmed by the cluster.”
Check status before you retry
Use the signature with Solana’s getSignatureStatuses method, or use an explorer or wallet that exposes equivalent confirmation information. Then classify the result before changing anything.

A confirmed transaction’s execution details are retrieved with getTransaction. Look for the error field, instruction result, and any application-visible outcome. A wallet screen returning to its previous page, closing a confirmation dialog, or showing a successful RPC response is not proof that the DeFi action completed.

If the transaction is pending or unknown
Why waiting matters
Solana transactions use a recent blockhash that limits how long they can be processed. Solana’s core documentation lists a 150-slot processing-age limit. Its payment guide describes blockhash expiry as approximately 60 seconds. Those figures describe protocol behavior, not a promise that every wallet’s “pending” label will change at exactly the same wall-clock time. Network conditions, RPC delays, and the wallet’s refresh interval can make the display lag.
While the original transaction may still be valid, sending another transaction that performs the same withdrawal, swap, deposit, or other economic action can create a duplicate execution. For an uncertain transfer, Solana’s exchange guidance is to wait for the original blockhash to expire before retrying. Use the transaction’s validity information and status, rather than an arbitrary timer, to decide when replacement is safe.
What to do during the wait
- Keep the original signature and record the time at which it was submitted.
- Refresh the signature status through
getSignatureStatusesor an equivalent wallet or explorer view. - Check whether the transaction has become confirmed, finalized, or failed.
- Do not approve or broadcast a second transaction with the same intended economic effect while the first may still execute.
- Once the blockhash is demonstrably expired, check the status one more time before constructing a replacement.
If the transaction remains unconfirmed after its validity window has ended and no confirmed result exists, the old transaction cannot newly land under that expired blockhash. At that point, a replacement must be rebuilt with a fresh blockhash and signed again.

If Solana reports a failure
A failed Solana transaction is not the same as a transaction that never reached the cluster. Solana transactions are atomic: if an instruction fails, the transaction’s state changes are reverted. Fees are still charged, however. Solana Documentation summarizes the rule this way: “If any instruction fails, the entire transaction fails and all state changes are reverted.”

Read the exact error returned for the signature. The remedy depends on whether the transaction expired, lacked funds, or reached a DeFi program that rejected an instruction.

Expired blockhash errors
An expired blockhash is a transaction-lifetime problem, not evidence that the swap or transfer partially completed. Because the original blockhash is no longer valid, create a new transaction using a current blockhash. A new transaction is a new authorization event: the wallet may ask you to review and approve it again.

Fee-balance errors
The protocol documentation lists a base fee of 5,000 lamports per signature. This is a protocol parameter, not a guarantee of the total amount displayed for every transaction. If the fee payer lacks sufficient SOL, the transaction cannot pay that fee. Confirm which account is paying, because the account holding the tokens being moved is not necessarily the fee payer.
Token-balance errors
Check the balance that the transaction can actually spend, not just a portfolio total. The required token may be in a different account, reserved by another operation, or simply below the requested amount. Correct the balance or amount and submit a newly built transaction; editing a failed signed transaction is not possible.

Application-level instruction errors
General Solana status data cannot determine every protocol’s rules or state. A DeFi program may reject an instruction for a condition that only the originating app can explain. Save the signature and the complete error text, then consult that app’s own explanation and support channel. The network’s generic success or failure label is not enough to infer what the program expected.

Only replace a transaction after the original is confirmed failed, its blockhash has expired, or you otherwise have clear evidence that it can no longer execute.
- Open the originating wallet or DeFi app and start the same operation again rather than trying to edit the old signed payload.
- Allow the app or wallet to fetch a fresh recent blockhash.
- Correct the identified problem first: add fee SOL, correct the token amount, or follow the app’s instructions for a program error.
- Review the destination, token, amount, and fee payer carefully.
- Authorize the newly constructed transaction in the wallet.
- Copy the new signature immediately after submission.
- Check the new signature separately with
getSignatureStatuses, and inspect it withgetTransactiononce confirmation information is available.
Never treat the second signature as proof that the first one failed. Check both signatures. If the first transaction later becomes confirmed, compare its actual effect with the replacement before taking any further action.
Verifying the final DeFi outcome
Confirmation establishes what happened on Solana; the originating application establishes how that result appears in its user interface. After a confirmed or finalized transaction, check the relevant wallet balance, token account, position, or activity record in the DeFi app. If the chain shows a failed instruction, the atomic transaction state changes were reverted, although the fee remains charged.
For a replacement, verify the replacement signature rather than assuming that the wallet’s success screen is accurate. Keep both signatures, the timestamps, and the error text if support is needed. This information lets the app distinguish an expired submission from an executed but rejected instruction.

- Retrying immediately: the first transaction may still execute, creating duplicate economic activity.
- Confusing submission with confirmation: an RPC response containing a signature is not a cluster confirmation.
- Using a fixed one-minute rule: approximately 60 seconds is a documentation description of blockhash expiry, not a universal wallet timer. Check validity and status.
- Reusing a failed signed payload: an expired or invalid blockhash requires a newly built transaction.
- Ignoring the fee payer: the account paying the fee must have sufficient SOL even when the transferred token balance is adequate.
- Assuming failure means no cost: instruction state changes revert, but transaction fees can still be charged.
- Sharing secrets with “recovery” helpers: recovery phrases, private keys, and wallet approval codes can authorize theft and are never needed to inspect a public signature.
- Changing several variables at once: if an application-level error is unexplained, changing the amount, route, and accounts simultaneously can hide the original cause. Preserve the error and follow the originating app’s guidance.
