What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Restart your Galaxy, install any available follow-up software and app updates, then check Device care and Battery usage to identify what is actually consuming resources. If the problem continues, run Samsung diagnostics and use Safe mode to check whether a downloaded app is involved. Samsung does not give a universal number of hours or days for a phone to settle after a One UI update, so persistent symptoms should be investigated rather than simply waited out.
Why a Galaxy phone may feel slow or drain faster
A symptom after an update does not, by itself, prove the update caused a fault. Samsung lists background apps, low available memory, outdated software and temporary system errors as possible reasons a Galaxy device may seem slow. Battery use can also rise with background activity or a weak network signal. Names and locations of settings can vary by phone model, software version and app version. Samsung’s slow-device guidance and battery guidance describe these potential causes.

Samsung says a phone may use more battery during the first few days of first-time use while apps and services optimize. That is not a guaranteed recovery timeline for a phone after a One UI update. Nor does faster drain following an update establish permanent battery damage: Samsung describes battery-capacity loss as gradual after repeated charging and discharging. Samsung’s battery guidance explains both points.
Start with a restart and updates
- Restart the phone. Open the power menu and tap Restart. If the phone is frozen, Samsung’s slow-device instructions say to hold the Side key and Volume down together for more than seven seconds. A restart closes running apps and refreshes the system. See Samsung’s instructions.
- Check for a follow-up system update. Open Settings > Software update. Samsung’s US instructions say the button is Download and install on One UI 8.0 or earlier, and Check for updates on One UI 8.5 or later. Updates and rollout timing depend on model, carrier and region. Samsung’s slow-device page lists these paths.
- Update downloaded apps through their official app stores. Background apps can affect performance, so current app versions are a sensible early check.
Check memory and storage
Close apps you are not using, then, if the option is available, open Settings > Device care > Memory > Clean now. Check storage in Device care as well: storage and memory are separate areas. Samsung includes background apps and low available memory among possible causes of slow performance, but cleaning memory is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix. Samsung’s slow-device guidance and Device care and diagnostics guidance explain the checks.

Find what is using the battery
Open Settings > Battery and inspect the usage graph or app details. Consider both the time period shown and what you were doing: an app near the top may simply be one you used heavily. If an infrequently used app is active in the background, Samsung recommends putting it to sleep; removing a downloaded app that appears to be draining power is another option. Menu paths vary by device and software. Samsung’s battery guide, updated 28 April 2026, covers battery usage and background-app controls.
- Sleeping apps: Useful for apps you rarely use that do not need to run in the background.
- Deep sleeping apps: They do not run in the background and work only when opened manually. Notifications or other background activity may therefore be affected.
- Power saving mode: Try it if reducing battery use matters more than having all background activity continue normally.
- Weak signal: Poor coverage can increase battery use. Compare behavior under ordinary coverage before attributing drain to the update.
Battery capacity declines gradually with repeated charge and discharge cycles and cannot be restored, according to Samsung. A single post-update symptom is not a battery-health diagnosis; use a battery-status diagnostic if available. Samsung’s battery guidance describes gradual wear.

Samsung Members offers Phone diagnostics; available tests can include battery status, charging, mobile network, Wi-Fi, sensors and other functions. Open Samsung Members and look under its Discover or Support tab for diagnostics. On supported phones, another route is Settings > Device care > Diagnostics > Phone diagnostics. The tests and menus differ by device; Samsung says Device care diagnostics are available on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or later. Check Samsung’s diagnostics instructions for availability and steps.
Use Safe mode to check downloaded apps
Safe mode runs core apps while temporarily disabling downloaded apps. If the slowdown or drain stops in Safe mode, a downloaded app may be involved. Remove recently installed apps one at a time and observe whether the symptom returns. If the problem persists in Safe mode, Samsung says it is likely hardware-related and recommends service-center inspection or arranging a repair. The exact way to enter Safe mode can vary, so confirm the steps for your model in Samsung’s device instructions. Samsung’s Safe mode and repair guidance explains the diagnostic distinction.
Choose the next diagnostic step
| Option | What it can help distinguish | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Battery usage graph | Whether one or more apps account for unusual drain | Interpret app use in context and check the graph’s time period. |
| Samsung Members or Device care diagnostics | Battery status and a range of device functions | Tests vary by phone and software; a result may require Samsung support. |
| Safe mode | Whether a downloaded app may be involved | Downloaded apps are disabled temporarily, so normal app behavior and notifications are unavailable during the check. |
| Samsung service assessment | Possible hardware trouble when symptoms remain in Safe mode | Requires a service assessment. |

Keep a factory reset as a last resort
Do not begin troubleshooting with a factory reset. Samsung warns that personal information may not be recoverable afterward; back up anything important first, and follow current instructions for your specific Galaxy model. Use less disruptive checks before considering a reset. Samsung’s reset and backup caution appears in its device troubleshooting guidance.
