If the phone is unresponsive, try one forced restart by holding Side + Volume down for more than seven seconds. If it then loops at the Samsung logo or cannot reach setup, stop repeating resets and contact Samsung support.
First, work out whether the reset is still running
“Stuck” can mean different things: a progress indicator that is moving slowly, a screen that has not changed, a Samsung logo that remains after the reset, repeated restarts, or an error message. A longer wait than expected does not by itself prove the phone is frozen. Samsung says the reset process may take up to an hour; that is a possible duration, not a guarantee that every reset finishes within an hour. Samsung’s reset troubleshooting guidance recommends keeping the phone or tablet plugged into a wall charger during the process.

If the screen is changing or showing reset activity
Leave the phone connected to a compatible wall charger and allow the process to continue. Avoid pressing buttons or disconnecting power while the screen is still progressing. A compatible USB-C wall charger and Galaxy charging cable can maintain power if they match your model; they do not repair a software or hardware fault.

Consider how long it has been unchanged and whether the phone responds to its buttons. Samsung does not publish a universal timeout that proves an in-progress reset screen is irrecoverably stuck, so do not treat a particular number of minutes as a definitive failure threshold. If the reset has had time to run and the device is genuinely unresponsive, use the forced-restart step below.

Force-restart an unresponsive Galaxy once
Samsung’s US boot-loop guidance says to hold Side and Volume down for more than seven seconds to restart a frozen device. Samsung India also gives this general key combination for a frozen Galaxy. Button positions and behavior can vary by model, so check the support instructions for your exact phone if the combination does not match or work.
- Press and hold the Side button and Volume down together.
- Keep holding for more than seven seconds, until the device restarts. Samsung’s boot-loop instructions describe this as the restart action for a frozen device.
- Release the buttons when the phone restarts, then give it time to boot.
This is a restart, not a way to undo a completed factory reset. If the phone is still showing an active reset process, the safer first step is to keep it powered and wait.

What to do after the restart
If the phone reaches setup
Let it finish booting and follow the on-screen setup prompts. Setup may ask for the Google account previously associated with the phone under Factory Reset Protection, and Samsung may request Samsung account credentials during reset-related steps. Samsung’s reset guidance notes that requirements vary by device and that a previously used Google account may be needed.
If it returns to the Samsung logo or restarts repeatedly
A repeated boot loop or failure to reach setup needs support, not repeated attempts to wipe the phone. The recovery-mode button sequence and menu options can differ by Galaxy model, and the screen or model is not specified here; do not select recovery-menu options based on a generic key combination. Contact Samsung support or arrange service through a Samsung service center. If the phone may have physical damage, Samsung advises professional inspection.

If setup requests an account you cannot access
Do not keep resetting the phone in an attempt to bypass the account check. Use the account recovery process for the Google or Samsung account shown on screen, or ask Samsung support what proof of ownership and model-specific steps are required.
Know what a factory reset means for your data
A factory reset removes personal data and settings. Samsung recommends backing up before resetting and warns that data deleted by a reset cannot be restored. If a reset has already started and the phone is unresponsive, Samsung’s cited instructions do not promise that a restart will recover the data. For that reason, do not count on a forced restart as a data-recovery method. Samsung’s reset troubleshooting page and factory-reset guidance explain the reset and backup cautions.

When to stop troubleshooting and get help
- The phone remains frozen after the forced restart.
- It repeatedly returns to the Samsung logo or never reaches setup.
- You see an error message, or the device appears physically damaged.
- The phone requires account credentials you cannot provide.
At that point, give Samsung support the exact Galaxy model and a description of what the screen shows, including whether a progress indicator moved and what happened after the restart. Samsung US directs users with unresolved reset issues to a walk-in service center or repair scheduling; suspected damage should be inspected professionally.
