If a Ryobi dual charger will not charge two batteries, first read the exact charger model and battery platform from their labels. For the RYOBI PCG005 18V ONE+ Dual-Port Simultaneous Charger, check the outlet, reseat each pack, allow a hot or cold pack to reach a normal temperature, and read the red and green LEDs. Then test the batteries one at a time. If the fault follows one battery, that pack is the likely problem; if a second compatible battery produces the same error, the charger needs service. Do not apply PCG005 LED meanings to another Ryobi model without checking its manual.

Start with the model number, not the symptom

“Ryobi dual charger” describes more than one product. The instructions, LED codes, battery platform and service procedure can differ between models. Find the model number on the charger label before doing anything beyond basic power and seating checks. RYOBI’s support system uses that number to provide the correct manual, parts information, repair options, warranty guidance and recycling information.

When the charger is a PCG005

The RYOBI PCG005 is identified as an 18V ONE+ Dual-Port Simultaneous Charger. It is designed for compatible RYOBI 18V ONE+ batteries and can charge two packs at the same time. The LED explanations in this article are specifically for the PCG005. A different dual-port charger may use different lights or a different charging sequence, so use that product’s own manual if the label does not say PCG005.

Confirm the battery platform

Look at the battery label as well as the charger. A pack that physically fits another Ryobi product is not automatically compatible with every charger. For a PCG005, confirm that each pack is an RYOBI 18V ONE+ battery. If either pack belongs to another voltage or product family, stop and obtain the correct charger information rather than trying to force it into a port.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Safety checks before troubleshooting

  • Use the charger in a dry, ventilated location and keep its air openings clear.
  • Do not open the charger, short battery terminals, bridge contacts with metal, or use an improvised “jump-start” procedure.
  • Stop using a pack that is swollen, cracked, leaking, severely damaged or unusually hot. A temperature warning during ordinary charging is different from visible physical damage.
  • Remove the battery before inspecting the port for dirt or an obstruction. Do not scrape contacts with a tool or apply liquid cleaner inside the charger.

If a battery or charger shows physical damage, skip repeated tests and use the manufacturer’s service route.

PCG005 troubleshooting sequence

Perform the checks in order. Changing several things at once makes it difficult to tell whether the battery, charger or power source caused the symptom.

1. Verify that the outlet is energized

  1. Unplug the charger, then plug it firmly into a known-working outlet.
  2. Check that the outlet’s switch, circuit breaker or residual-current device has not turned off.
  3. Make sure the charger plug is fully seated. Avoid diagnosing the charger through a loose extension connection or a switched-off power strip.

The PCG005 manual specifically directs you to check that the charger is properly connected to an energized outlet when charging does not start or appears to stop early. If another device cannot operate from the same outlet, correct the outlet problem first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Reseat each battery

With the charger powered, align the battery rails with the port and push the pack in until it is fully seated according to the PCG005 instructions. A pack that is only partly engaged may not make the electrical connection needed to start charging. Remove it and reinstall it once rather than repeatedly forcing the latch.

Perform the same check for the second port. If one port responds and the other does not, note that result; it becomes useful when you isolate the packs in the next steps.

3. Allow a hot or cold pack to return to an acceptable temperature

A battery can be electrically healthy and still wait before charging if its temperature is outside the charger’s acceptable range. On the PCG005, a flashing red LED with the green LED off can indicate that temperature delay. Let a recently used pack cool naturally, or let a cold pack warm naturally indoors. Do not heat it with a heater, hair dryer or other direct source, and do not put it in a freezer.

The PCG005 manual says charging begins automatically when the pack reaches the appropriate temperature. Leave the pack installed only if the manual’s conditions are met, and allow enough time for the warning to clear. A temperature delay is not the same as a permanent error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Read the LEDs before removing anything

Record what each port is showing. This prevents a temporary temperature condition from being mistaken for a failed battery and helps you compare the two packs.

PCG005 indicator Meaning What to do
Red flashing; green off The battery is too hot or too cold for charging at that moment. Allow the pack to cool or warm naturally. Charging should start automatically when it reaches the acceptable temperature.
Red and green flashing together Error condition. Remove and reinstall the battery. If the same error repeats, test another compatible pack.
Green flashing Charging. Leave the pack in place until the indicator changes.
Green fading on and off The battery is more than 80 percent charged and ready for use. You may use it, or leave it installed if you want charging to continue.
Green steady Fully charged; the charger is in Energy Save Mode. Charging is complete. Remove the pack when convenient.

These meanings apply to the PCG005 only. If your model’s label is different, use its manual rather than interpreting the light pattern from this table.

5. Test one battery at a time

Two batteries failing together can make a single bad pack look like a charger failure. Remove both packs, then test one known-compatible battery by itself. Observe its LED response and whether it progresses from charging to a completed state. Repeat the same test with the second pack, using the same port first so that the comparison is controlled.

The PCG005 manual directs users to try another battery if the first will not charge. If the second pack charges, the original pack is implicated. If the second pack also refuses to charge or produces the same error, the manual’s service direction applies to the charger and battery pack or packs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Swap ports only after the single-pack test

Once you have recorded each battery’s behavior, move the same pack to the other port. This can show whether the symptom follows a battery or remains with one charger port. Treat the result as an isolation clue, not permission to disassemble the unit. A pack that errors in both ports points toward the pack; two packs that fail in the same charger point toward the charger or its power source.

Do not infer a fault merely because the two LEDs change at different times. The PCG005 is a simultaneous two-port charger, but each battery can have a different state of charge or temperature.

How to decide whether the battery or charger is at fault

Test result Most likely interpretation Next action
One pack charges; the other repeatedly gives the error or never progresses after normal temperature and seating checks. The fault follows the individual battery. Stop relying on that pack and ask RYOBI or the applicable retailer about warranty or replacement eligibility for the exact battery platform.
Two compatible packs produce the same PCG005 error after reseating. The charger is suspect, although the power source should already have been verified. Follow the PCG005 manual and RYOBI service process rather than buying a battery at random.
Both packs work separately but not when installed together. The simultaneous setup, port condition or model-specific behavior needs review. Recheck the model manual, outlet and port seating. If the condition persists with compatible packs, request charger service.
Red flashes with green off, then charging starts after the pack cools or warms. Temperature delay, not necessarily a failed component. Let the pack reach the acceptable range and allow automatic charging to resume.
No indicator appears with any compatible pack and a verified outlet. A power, charger or connection fault is possible. Do not open the charger; use the manufacturer’s support and repair route.

For a repeated PCG005 error, the manual says to remove and reinstall the pack, repeat the conditions and try another battery. If the error remains with another pack, treat the charger as requiring professional evaluation rather than assuming both batteries failed simultaneously.

What the PCG005 manual says about persistent failure

The operator manual’s service instruction is direct: “If the charger does not charge your battery pack(s) under normal circumstances, return both the battery pack(s) and charger to your nearest repair center for electrical check.” That direction matters when normal outlet, seating and temperature checks have been completed and the symptom persists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repair center can evaluate the charger and packs together. Sending only the charger may hide a battery-side fault, while sending only one battery may leave a charger fault untested. Package and transport the items according to the current support instructions, and retain proof of purchase if warranty review may apply.

Use RYOBI support for the exact service path

RYOBI’s support resources provide model lookup, manuals, parts information, service-center details, warranty information and recycling guidance. Enter the model number printed on your charger instead of searching by the general phrase “dual charger.” Have the battery model numbers, purchase date, observed LED pattern and outlet test result ready.

If the battery is still under warranty

Contact RYOBI customer service about the battery’s warranty status before purchasing a replacement. Eligibility can depend on the exact model, purchase documentation and the terms that applied in your region.

If the battery is out of warranty

RYOBI’s battery support information identifies The Home Depot as the replacement route for out-of-warranty batteries. Confirm the exact 18V ONE+ battery model and local availability before ordering. A replacement pack is appropriate only when the isolation test shows that the fault follows one battery; it is not a substitute for testing the charger with a second compatible pack.

If the charger is the suspected component

Use the model-specific repair or warranty route. Do not open the charger or attempt a component-level repair unless you are following an authorized procedure. Chargers contain mains-voltage circuitry, and an improvised repair can create a shock or fire hazard and may affect warranty coverage.

Common mistakes that make the diagnosis harder

  • Applying another model’s LED chart: indicator colors and flashing patterns are model-specific. Confirm PCG005 before using its meanings.
  • Testing both packs at once: a single defective battery can make a dual-port charger appear completely dead. Test each pack alone.
  • Calling a temperature delay an error: red flashing with green off on the PCG005 can clear automatically after the pack reaches a suitable temperature.
  • Forcing a battery into the port: correct alignment and full seating are required; force can damage the rails or contacts.
  • Buying a replacement immediately: if a second compatible pack also errors, the charger is the more likely service candidate.
  • Using unofficial jump-start advice: bypassing the charger’s protections can damage the pack and create a serious safety risk.

If your Ryobi charger is not a PCG005

Keep the general diagnostic logic—identify the model, verify the outlet, confirm compatibility, reseat the pack, account for temperature, and isolate one battery at a time—but do not assume the PCG005 table or its service wording applies. Locate the model number on the charger label and open that model’s manual through RYOBI support. Follow its LED definitions, charging limits and repair instructions exactly.

The same battery-versus-charger isolation principle remains useful: a fault that follows one compatible pack suggests the pack, while the same error with another compatible pack suggests the charger. That conclusion should still be confirmed through the model’s support and warranty process.

A concise decision checklist

  1. Read the charger model and battery platform from their labels.
  2. Obtain the matching manual; use the PCG005 LED table only if the charger is PCG005.
  3. Plug the charger into a verified energized outlet.
  4. Seat one compatible battery fully, then observe the LED.
  5. If the pack is unusually hot or cold, let it return to a normal temperature.
  6. For a PCG005 red-and-green flashing error, remove and reinstall the pack.
  7. Test the second compatible battery by itself.
  8. Swap ports after recording each pack’s behavior.
  9. If the fault follows one pack, pursue battery warranty or replacement options.
  10. If another pack produces the same error, stop experimenting and arrange charger-and-pack service.
