Recheck the restaurant location, fulfillment method, items, quantities, sizes, modifiers, promotion, item subtotal, every fee, tax, surcharge and tip. A delivery app may lawfully show a different food price from the restaurant’s in-store menu, and the final total can also change when options or fees are added. If the amount charged after submission is higher than the checkout total you saved, preserve both records and contact the platform with the exact difference; contact the restaurant as well when its listed item or configuration appears wrong.
First, identify where the difference occurred
“The price changed” can describe several different events. An item may have a higher delivery-menu price than its in-store price. The cart may include a larger size or an add-on that was easy to miss. A service, delivery, small-order or other surcharge may appear only in the order summary. Tax may be calculated after the address and delivery method are confirmed. A promotion may have a minimum, an excluded item or a one-use limit. A tip is normally optional but still changes the displayed total. Finally, the platform could charge a different amount after you submitted the order.

These situations require different remedies. A higher app menu price is not, by itself, proof of a billing error. A post-submission charge that differs from the amount shown at checkout is a clearer discrepancy to document and challenge.
Why restaurant-app prices can differ
Delivery menus can use different item prices
Restaurants often maintain a separate menu for delivery services. DoorDash said on June 30, 2023, that it does not require restaurants to match in-store prices on delivery orders and that restaurants decide their own delivery-menu pricing. Its statement is a description of DoorDash’s policy, not a rule for every service or jurisdiction: DoorDash’s menu-pricing statement.

DoorDash’s consumer terms also say that prices displayed through its services may differ from merchant or third-party prices and may change. Those terms apply to that service and should not be treated as evidence that every platform follows the same practice: DoorDash consumer terms.
The company’s Caviar help page likewise says menu prices are set at the restaurant’s discretion and notes that some restaurant partners include fees: Caviar help guidance. A restaurant’s own pickup page, dining-room menu and a third-party delivery listing therefore may all show different item prices.
Selections change the item total
Compare the complete configuration, not just the dish name. A required choice such as “regular” versus “large,” a protein substitution, extra toppings, a side, packaging charge or quantity multiplier can raise the subtotal. Some interfaces show the base price in the listing and reveal the price of a modifier only after you open the item.
Fees, taxes and tips are separate from food prices
Read the order summary line by line. Separate the food subtotal from delivery, service, small-order, regulatory or other surcharges; then check tax, discounts and tip. A promotion may reduce one component while a fee is calculated on another. The Federal Trade Commission’s consumer guidance asks whether delivery apps disclose the total price, individual costs, the timing of fees, online-versus-store price differences and restrictions on promotions: FTC consumer advice.

Location and timing affect what you see
Your address can change tax, delivery distance, available promotions and the restaurants or menu version shown. A pickup order and a delivery order are different transactions even when the food is identical. Prices or fee displays can also change as a platform updates its policies.
For example, Uber Eats says that in California, in response to a law beginning July 1, 2024, it shows delivery-fee tiers rather than specific prices before checkout and displays the full order price with applicable fees and taxes at checkout. This is California-specific company guidance, not a nationwide description of Uber Eats or other services: Uber Eats California fee guidance.
Audit the order before submitting it
Use this sequence whenever the checkout total looks different from the menu listing or from another ordering channel.

- Confirm the restaurant and location. Check the street address, branch and service area. Two locations under the same name can have different menus and prices.
- Confirm fulfillment. Mark whether the order is delivery, pickup or another option. Do not compare a pickup subtotal with a delivery total.
- Reopen every item. Verify the dish, size, quantity, protein, sides, toppings, substitutions and packaging choices. Remove an accidental duplicate or add-on.
- Compare the listing with the cart. Write down the displayed item price and the cart’s line-item price for each item. If the line item itself is higher, capture both screens.
- Expand the subtotal and fee details. Identify the food subtotal, each mandatory fee, any surcharge, tax and the tip. Do not treat one combined “total” as an explanation.
- Check the promotion’s conditions. Confirm the minimum spend, eligible restaurant or items, required payment method, expiry, one-use restriction and whether the discount applies before or after fees. A code that appears accepted can still exclude part of the cart.
- Review the address and payment method. A changed delivery address, saved card, currency or membership setting can alter taxes, fees or eligibility.
- Compare another channel only on equal terms. Use the restaurant’s own ordering page or phone line only if the same location, food configuration, fulfillment method, taxes, fees, discount conditions and tip are being compared.
- Save the evidence. Take a screenshot showing the final checkout amount, date and order details. Keep the confirmation, receipt and bank or card record after placing the order.
Use the order summary to locate the cause

If the amount charged is higher than the checkout total
1. Preserve a precise record
Keep the checkout screenshot, confirmation screen, emailed receipt, final invoice and payment notification. Note the displayed total, charged total, order number, restaurant location, date and the exact dollar difference. If the app revised the order before submission, save that revision too; it helps distinguish a visible update from a later charge.

2. Check for an understandable adjustment first
Compare the receipt with the checkout breakdown. A tip edited after checkout, a corrected tax, a replacement item, an added quantity or a separate authorization can explain a bank alert that does not match the original screen. Look for a second transaction or a temporary card authorization rather than assuming two completed charges.
3. Contact platform support with the exact discrepancy
Use the order’s help or support path and state: “Checkout showed $X; my receipt or card charge shows $Y; the difference is $Z.” Attach the saved records and identify the line that changed. Ask support to explain the calculation and correct the charge if it was applied incorrectly. DoorDash’s consumer terms address an incorrect charge that differs from the displayed checkout total, but that language does not establish a universal refund, credit or remedy across platforms.
4. Contact the restaurant when its menu data appears wrong
If the disputed amount is the food price, a modifier or a missing item, tell the restaurant the branch, item and configuration shown in the app. The restaurant controls the menu information in many platform arrangements, while the platform controls checkout, payment and delivery. Contacting both parties creates a clearer record without assuming which one made the error.
5. Escalate carefully
If support does not resolve a documented difference, use the platform’s formal complaint process and retain the case number. For a significant unauthorized or duplicate charge, ask your card issuer or payment provider about its dispute process and deadlines. Describe only what the records show; do not claim a law was violated unless the applicable authority or a qualified adviser confirms that conclusion.

How to compare an app with the restaurant’s own channel
A side-by-side comparison is useful only when every material variable matches. Record the values in this order:

If the app’s food subtotal is higher but all fees and taxes are otherwise equal, you have identified a menu-pricing difference. If the food subtotal matches and the total does not, focus on fees, tax, discount rules or tip. A cheaper restaurant webpage may also omit delivery costs, so it is not automatically the cheaper completed order.
What current consumer-protection information does—and does not—say
On April 15, 2026, the FTC announced a proposed rulemaking seeking public comment on potentially unfair or deceptive pricing and fee practices in online food and grocery delivery. The announcement discusses whether item prices differ from in-store or restaurant prices, whether prices vary by consumer and whether charges are clearly disclosed. It identified May 18, 2026, as the comment deadline. The action is a proposal, not an enacted nationwide rule: FTC announcement and FTC rulemaking page.

Your rights can depend on your country, state or province, the platform’s terms, the restaurant’s disclosures and the type of charge. Verify current local requirements before relying on a legal conclusion. Keep the practical distinction clear: an openly displayed different menu price may be permitted under a platform’s policy, while a charge that exceeds the total presented at checkout is a specific billing issue worth documenting.
Common situations and the best response
The app item is more expensive than the dining-room menu
Confirm that you are viewing the same location and size. If they match, treat it as a delivery-menu pricing difference unless the app promised price parity. Compare the completed delivery totals, not just the item, before deciding which channel is cheaper.
The total rises when you open checkout
Expand every fee, tax and promotion line. Check whether the delivery address, order size or fulfillment method changed. Save the final breakdown before ordering; a starting menu price is not the amount you agreed to pay.

Read the promotion’s minimum, exclusions, expiration and usage limits. Remove ineligible items or contact support with the code and the qualifying cart. Do not assume a banner applies to fees or every item.
Your receipt is higher than the saved checkout screen
Compare the two records line by line, check for an edited tip, replacement or duplicate authorization, then send the exact numbers to platform support. Include the restaurant when the food line or modifier is the disputed component.
Habits that prevent surprises
- Open the full item customization panel before adding anything.
- Use the order-summary view, not the restaurant card’s headline price, to decide.
- Keep a screenshot of unusually large discounts or totals.
- Review the confirmation immediately after placing an order.
- Check your payment statement for a completed charge versus a temporary authorization.
- When price matters, compare the restaurant’s own channel and the app using identical delivery or pickup conditions.
A careful comparison tells you whether you are seeing a different restaurant-set menu price, an added order cost, a promotion limit or a true charge mismatch. That diagnosis gives support the information it needs and prevents a general pricing difference from being confused with an unauthorized charge.
