Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf your refurbished MacBook arrives damaged, faulty, or different from the listing, stop using it long enough to document the condition, identify the seller named on your order, and contact that seller before paying for repairs or buying parts. Your return deadline, warranty route, and legal remedies depend on who sold the computer, where you bought it, and the terms attached to that order.
Keep the packaging, listing, receipt, serial number, photos, and support messages together. A direct purchase from Apple is handled differently from a computer sold by a retailer or marketplace seller, and Apple’s U.S. 14-day return example is not a universal deadline for refurbished Macs.

What to do if a refurbished MacBook arrives with a problem
Start with evidence, not troubleshooting. The safest sequence is to preserve the condition, contact the seller shown on your receipt, check the exact return and coverage terms, and only then follow repair instructions. Opening the MacBook, replacing a battery, or authorizing paid work can make a return or warranty claim harder to resolve.
Make the device safe first
If the MacBook is hot, smells of chemicals or smoke, has a swollen case, a cracked battery area, exposed wiring, or liquid inside it, unplug it and stop handling it. Do not charge or power it on again. Photograph the condition from a safe distance and tell the seller that you stopped use for safety reasons. For ordinary cosmetic damage or a software symptom, you can document the problem without dismantling the computer.

1. Pause and create a record of what arrived
Photograph the package and computer
Before changing settings or removing anything, photograph the shipping box, shipping label, seals, inner packing, accessories, and every side of the MacBook. Take close photographs of dents, scratches, a cracked screen, missing parts, liquid marks, or a serial-number label. Keep the original packaging until the seller confirms that it is not needed.
Save a screenshot or PDF of the seller’s listing, including the advertised model, year, processor, memory, storage, condition grade, included accessories, and any statement about battery condition. Listings can change after an order is placed, so preserve the version you saw.
Write down the timeline and symptom
Record the delivery date, the time you first opened the package, and when the problem appeared. Describe what happens in observable terms: for example, “the screen has a black vertical line,” “the included charger is missing,” or “the Mac shuts down when the cable is removed.” Note any error message exactly as shown. If the issue can be demonstrated without risking damage, make a short video or screenshot. This is practical evidence for the seller, not a universal Apple requirement.
Keep purchase and identity details together
Store the order number, invoice, seller name, delivery confirmation, MacBook serial number, and all emails or chat transcripts in one folder. Do not erase or factory-reset the MacBook until the seller tells you to do so; a reset may remove useful evidence and can complicate a return. Avoid signing into sensitive accounts or copying personal files to a device that appears compromised. If you already did, sign out only when the seller or service provider gives you a return procedure that requires it.

2. Identify the actual seller before choosing a remedy
The company whose name appears on the order or invoice controls the first return conversation. A marketplace may display a familiar storefront while a separate third-party seller ships and warranties the computer. Check the “sold by,” “fulfilled by,” invoice, and payment record rather than assuming that Apple’s policy applies.
| Where the order was placed | First contact | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Apple online store or Apple Store | Apple customer service or an Apple Store, using the order record | The applicable country policy, return deadline, and whether Apple wants a return, exchange, or inspection |
| Apple Certified Refurbished purchase | Apple, because Apple sold the unit | That the product is the Apple order covered by Apple’s standard policy; do not extend the program’s claims to another seller’s “refurbished” listing |
| Retailer or authorized reseller | The retailer named on the receipt | Its condition grade, return authorization process, shipping responsibility, and seller warranty |
| Marketplace third-party seller | The third-party seller through the marketplace order page | Who issued the invoice, the seller’s deadline, marketplace escalation rules, and whether Apple coverage is available for that serial number |
If Apple sold the MacBook directly in the United States, Apple’s published Returns & Refunds policy says, “You have 14 calendar days to return an item from the date you received it.” Apple says its standard policy applies to its Certified Refurbished products. That figure is a U.S. direct-Apple policy example; it is not a general deadline for another country, retailer, or marketplace seller.
3. Contact the seller promptly and in writing
Use the order page, the support address printed on the invoice, or the seller’s published support channel. Keep the conversation in writing when possible. Your first message should be factual and should state the outcome you want.

4. Separate the return deadline from warranty coverage
Return terms answer “Can I send this back?”
Read the terms attached to the exact order. Look for the last day to request or ship a return, whether the seller requires authorization first, whether opened electronics are treated differently, who pays postage, and whether a refund is issued after delivery or inspection. A marketplace’s general policy may not be the same as the third-party seller’s terms, so identify the policy that governs your transaction.
Coverage terms answer “Who must fix it?”
Use Apple’s coverage-check page for the serial number when appropriate, but keep your receipt. Apple says its coverage system may not show every local consumer right or additional program, and Apple may request proof of purchase to verify eligibility or correct the purchase date. A third-party seller’s own warranty may apply even when Apple coverage has ended; conversely, a listing that says “refurbished” does not by itself prove Apple warranty eligibility.
Consumer-law rights are a separate route
Apple states that its one-year limited warranty and AppleCare benefits are in addition to rights under consumer law. The available remedies, deadlines, and service options depend on the country or region and the facts of the sale. If a seller refuses a reasonable resolution, consult the consumer-protection office or dispute-resolution service for the place where you bought the MacBook. Do not assume a universal statutory deadline or automatic refund right.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Do not make a paid repair the first move
Do not remove screws, replace the battery, install parts, or authorize a repair before asking the seller how it wants the claim handled. This is prudent process advice rather than a universal legal rule: the seller may require an inspection, a particular shipping method, or an untouched condition for a return.

If Apple or the seller directs you to Apple service, use an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Apple says those providers deliver Apple-certified repairs using genuine Apple parts. Apple also says repairs by non-authorized providers are not covered by its limited warranty or AppleCare, although the independent provider may offer its own repair warranty. Ask in writing who will pay, what warranty covers the work, and whether service will affect your return option.
6. Handle a battery warning carefully
What “Service Recommended” means
On a MacBook that starts normally, open System Settings and select Battery; the exact labels can vary by macOS version. Apple Support says “Service Recommended” means the battery holds less charge than when it was new or is not functioning normally. It is a condition warning, not a complete diagnosis of why the battery is behaving that way.
What to report
Photograph the warning, note the battery percentage, charging behavior, unexpected shutdowns, and whether the Mac works on its power adapter. Send those details to the seller or Apple before buying a replacement battery. Apple’s one-year limited warranty includes replacement coverage for a defective battery, subject to the applicable warranty terms. Built-in batteries are not a routine do-it-yourself replacement for a newly delivered computer.

7. Match the response to the symptom
Physical damage or shipping damage
Leave the damage as found, photograph the outer box and internal padding, and report it immediately. Do not discard packaging or attempt cosmetic repair. The seller may need the packing evidence to determine whether the damage occurred in transit or before shipment.

Wrong model, specification, or accessory
Compare the serial number and “About This Mac” information with the listing only if the computer can be checked safely. Record the discrepancy and identify the missing or substituted item. Request a return, exchange, or correction rather than purchasing the missing accessory yourself.
Won’t power on or won’t charge
Record whether any indicator, startup sound, fan movement, or screen image appears when connected to the supplied adapter. Try no more than the basic, reversible check the seller recommends. Do not open the case or use an unverified charger while a return claim is pending.
Activation, account, or software lock
Tell the seller exactly what screen appears and whether it requests another person’s Apple Account. Do not attempt to bypass a lock or pay for a workaround. A seller must provide a device that can be lawfully set up, and the seller is the right first contact for a used unit that remains linked to someone else.

- Confirm the return address, authorization number, deadline, and required carrier.
- Back up only the personal data you need, then follow the seller’s sign-out and erase instructions.
- Photograph the MacBook, accessories, serial number, and packed box immediately before sealing it.
- Use the seller’s label or the shipping method specified in writing; insure the parcel when the seller’s terms call for it.
- Keep the drop-off receipt, tracking number, and delivery confirmation.
- Ask when the inspection will occur and when the refund or replacement decision will be issued.
Never send the computer to an address supplied only in an informal message if it conflicts with the order record. Verify the destination through the seller’s official support channel.
9. If the seller refuses, delays, or gives conflicting answers
Ask the seller to state its decision and reason in writing. Reply with the original listing, delivery date, photographs, and the specific term you believe applies. Keep any inspection report or diagnostic result, but do not commission a paid report unless the likely value justifies it and the seller agrees that it will accept the report.
If the seller stops responding, use the marketplace’s formal escalation route before its deadline. You can also ask your payment provider about its dispute process, while continuing to preserve the seller correspondence. For country-specific rights, contact the relevant consumer-protection authority or an appropriate dispute-resolution service. Apple’s warranty information itself cautions that service options depend on location, so the correct escalation path cannot be determined from the word “refurbished” alone.
Return-and-claim checklist
- Delivery date and exact seller recorded
- Listing, condition grade, invoice, and order number saved
- Photos of packaging, damage, serial number, accessories, and screen messages
- Short written symptom timeline
- Seller contacted before repair or parts purchase
- Return deadline, authorization requirement, and shipping responsibility confirmed
- Apple coverage checked separately when relevant, with proof of purchase retained
- Written instructions, tracking receipt, and all support messages preserved
A refurbished MacBook that arrives with a problem is first a seller-resolution issue, not automatically a repair bill. Preserve the evidence, use the policy attached to the actual transaction, and keep Apple warranty or local consumer-law options as separate checks rather than assuming one route replaces the others.
