Why won’t my PS5 recognize my PS2 disc? In most cases, the answer depends on where you inserted it. Sony’s retail PS5 software does not play PlayStation 2 game discs, so a PS2 disc that fails to launch from the normal PS5 home screen is behaving as expected. A jailbroken PS5 running PS5SX2 follows a separate, unofficial path with its own BIOS, firmware, release, disc-format and copying requirements.
Use the checks below to identify whether you have encountered normal stock-console incompatibility, a PS5SX2 setup problem, a disc-format limitation or a broader optical-drive fault.

First, identify which PS5 software is handling the disc
When you are using the normal PS5 interface
Sony’s PS5 Instruction Manual states that “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” A retail PS5 therefore will not recognize a PS2 game as playable software from the standard dashboard. This is not evidence that the game disc, console drive or system software is defective.

Do not start with a factory reset, database rebuild or drive repair solely because a PS2 disc does nothing in the stock interface. Those procedures cannot add PS2 disc support that Sony does not provide.

When you are using PS5SX2
PS5SX2 is an unofficial PCSX2 port intended to run natively on a jailbroken PS5. Its project documentation requires a homebrew-capable console, the project’s helper and mount components, a user-dumped PS2 BIOS and games supplied by the user. The project does not include BIOS files, games or keys.
If PS5SX2 itself does not start, or the console is not running the required jailbreak and helper environment, a disc-recognition test is premature. Confirm that the emulator opens successfully before diagnosing the optical media.
Use this decision path before changing anything

Confirm the PS5SX2 release and console environment
Ask four questions before changing files or settings:
- Which PS5SX2 release is installed?
- Which PS5 model and system firmware are being used?
- Does the application open and show its game shelf?
- At what point does recognition stop: insertion, mounting, copying or game launch?
The project’s tested-console and firmware list applies only to combinations it has actually tried. Unlisted firmware has not been tested, and the project’s tested-games table is not a compatibility guarantee. A game appearing in that table does not promise that every disc revision, region, firmware combination or drive arrangement will work.

The release page lists PS5SX2 2.03, released October 11, 2026. Version 2.02 notes described disc-copy progress and automatic handling when a disc was inserted. These details are version-sensitive; check the release notes for the build installed on the console instead of assuming that a menu or option exists in every version.
Determine whether you are using a physical disc or an image
Image-based testing
The PS5SX2 README lists ISO, CHD, CSO and ZSO game images. If you already have an image workflow, test a supported image before blaming the physical drive. A working image establishes that the emulator, BIOS and game configuration can reach the game; it does not prove that the optical drive can read the original disc.
Keep the BIOS and game files to your own dumps, as required by the project documentation. Do not copy a BIOS or game file from an unidentified download and treat it as a diagnostic baseline.
Physical-disc testing
For a disc, identify whether the release is DVD-format or CD-format. Independent coverage reports that the PS5’s built-in optical drive cannot read PS2 games released on CDs. That limitation is reported outside Sony’s official materials and should be treated as a compatibility claim for the particular emulator and setup, not as a universal statement about every future build.

An external USB optical drive has been reported as a possible option for PS2 CD-format discs. Do not assume that every USB drive works, that Sony supports this use or that PS5SX2 will expose the drive automatically. Verify support for the exact PS5SX2 release, console firmware and drive model before buying hardware.
Understand copying and direct-drive behavior
PS5SX2 release notes describe a shelf that shows copy progress. When a disc is inserted, the software may copy it if no copy exists or start an existing copy. A progress indicator means the emulator is processing the disc; it is not the same as the stock PS5 recognizing PS2 software.
Independent coverage describes direct drive play as experimental and off by default in the main project. Consequently, a disc may need to be copied before it can be launched, even when the physical drive is readable. A build that has an experimental direct-drive flag may behave differently from a release that only supports copied images.

- Start PS5SX2 and confirm that the application reaches its game shelf.
- Insert the disc with the console positioned according to Sony’s orientation guidance.
- Watch for a copy prompt or progress display rather than waiting only for a game icon in the PS5 dashboard.
- If a previous copy is listed, start that copy from the shelf.
- Allow the operation to finish before testing launch. Interrupting the copy can leave an incomplete image that looks like a game-specific failure.
- If the release offers an experimental direct-drive option, treat it as a diagnostic experiment, not the normal path. Record whether the same disc works after copying.
Check the disc itself without confusing condition with compatibility
Remove fingerprints, dust and loose dirt with a soft, clean cloth, wiping from the center toward the edge. Inspect the readable side for deep scratches or delamination. Cleaning can resolve a marginal read, but it cannot make stock PS5 software play a PS2 disc and cannot remove a CD-format limitation reported for the internal drive.

Do not use a burned disc or an audio CD as a substitute test for PS2 compatibility. Sony states that PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs. The PS5 manual also notes that unfinalized DVDs, scratches, dust, recording quality and characteristics of the recording device can prevent playback. Those statements concern the console’s supported-media behavior; they do not establish why a particular PS2 disc fails in PS5SX2.
Test the PS5 optical drive with supported media
Only run a general drive diagnosis with media that the PS5 officially supports, such as a retail PS5 game disc, Blu-ray or DVD. Sony’s recommended sequence is:
- Check that the disc is inserted in the correct orientation for whether the console is standing vertically or lying horizontally.
- Eject and reinsert the disc after each adjustment.
- Clean dirt or fingerprints with a soft, clean cloth.
- Try another supported game disc, Blu-ray or DVD.
- If supported media still fails, start Safe Mode and choose the option to clear the cache and rebuild the database.
If multiple supported discs remain unreadable after those steps, Sony directs users to PlayStation Repairs. This is a different diagnosis from a PS2 disc that never had stock PS5 support.

Sony lists reinstalling system software after rebuilding the database in its broader disc troubleshooting flow, but warns that reinstalling deletes all console information. It is not a first-line response to a PS2 compatibility problem, and it cannot turn a retail PS5 into a PS2-disc player.

Consider that destructive step only when Sony’s support process identifies a system-software fault and you have backed up information you are prepared to lose. For a homebrew console, also account for the possibility that reinstalling or updating firmware can change the jailbreak and emulator environment; check the project’s current compatibility information before taking any system-wide action.
Why one PS2 game may work while another does not
Different optical formats
One game may be on DVD while another is on CD. If the internal-drive CD limitation applies to your setup, the DVD can work while the CD never reaches the copy stage.
Different emulator paths
A copied image can work even when direct-drive play does not. Conversely, a release may expose direct-drive behavior only as an experimental option. Compare the path used by each title rather than concluding that the entire emulator is broken.
Different disc condition or production characteristics
Scratches, dust, unfinalized media and recording characteristics can affect optical reading. A marginal disc can fail during copying while another retail disc succeeds.
Different game compatibility
PS5SX2’s tested-games list is not a guarantee. A title can fail because of its game-specific behavior, region or emulator support even when the BIOS and another game launch correctly. Keep a record of the exact title, disc format, region if known, emulator release and whether failure occurs during detection, copying or launch.
What to record before asking for help
- PS5 model and firmware version.
- PS5SX2 release number.
- Whether the console is already jailbroken and the required helper and mount components are working.
- Whether the BIOS is your own dump and whether an image file launches.
- Disc title, region marking and whether it is CD or DVD format.
- Whether you are using the built-in drive or an external USB drive.
- The exact on-screen message, copy percentage or point at which the process stops.
- Results from one other PS2 disc and one officially supported PS5 disc, Blu-ray or DVD.
This information separates an unsupported stock-console request from an emulator configuration issue and from a failing optical drive without erasing useful data.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop treating the symptom as a drive defect when the only failure is a PS2 disc in the standard PS5 interface. Stop treating it as a universal emulator failure when a supported image launches or another title copies successfully. Seek Sony service when several supported PS5 discs, Blu-rays or DVDs fail after cleaning and Safe Mode database rebuilding. For PS5SX2-specific failures, use the project’s release documentation and tested-firmware information, recognizing that it is an unofficial project with version-dependent behavior and no promise of broad game compatibility.
