Then use the appeal route for the specific action and reason shown: a video removal, copyright claim, legal request, and account lock are not interchangeable cases. An appeal may not restore the content or account, so keep your own records and consider the safety of people shown before reposting.
First identify what the platform did
Read the exact notice before choosing a response. It should indicate what content or account was affected and may identify a policy, copyright claim, legal request, or account issue. If the reason or affected item is unclear, ask through the platform’s official help route rather than guessing.

A removed video and a restricted account are separate enforcement actions. Some platforms can take action against an individual post, an account, or both. Preserve each notice separately if more than one action occurred.
Save the notice, video, and timeline
Keep evidence of both the content and the platform action. A platform upload is not a dependable archive, and records can help you describe what happened even though they do not guarantee reinstatement.

- Save the full email or in-app notice, plus screenshots of the removal or restriction and any appeal screens.
- Copy the post URL if it is still available. Record the date and approximate time you noticed the action and submitted any appeal.
- Keep the original video file and make a separate backup. WITNESS advises retaining original files when possible, documenting how and when copies were acquired, and preserving descriptive and embedded metadata. Editing or transcoding can remove information; if you need a redacted public copy, edit a duplicate and label it as edited. WITNESS’s archiving guidance
- Write a short factual timeline: when and where the footage was recorded, what happened before, during, and after it, and who recorded it. WITNESS says media is easier to verify when date, time, and location are captured. WITNESS protest documentation guidance
- Keep appeal receipts and follow-up messages with the notice and footage records.
For a separate backup, a computer or external drive can keep a copy independent of the platform. A backup does not restore an account or determine whether footage is admissible as evidence.
Protect people before reposting
Protest footage can expose people who did not expect to be identified. Before publishing another copy, consider faces, clothing, tattoos, voices, signs, street details, and location metadata. - If a public copy needs blurring or muting, make those changes to a duplicate and retain the original securely when appropriate.
- Consider whether showing a person’s identity or exact location could put them at risk, even if the footage was recorded in public.
- Plan for your own safety and secure the device holding original footage and records.

Use the link or steps in the notice, or the platform’s official help channel. Keep the explanation short and factual: identify the content, describe what it shows, supply relevant context the review may have missed, explain why the stated rule may not apply if that is accurate, and say what remedy you are requesting. Do not claim facts you cannot support.

- Copy the exact reason and any policy or law cited in the notice.
- Gather the post URL, relevant screenshots, original-file details, and a concise timeline.
- Submit through the action-specific in-app or official support route.
- Save the submission confirmation and any later correspondence. Provide identity or ownership information only through the platform’s official interface; never give passwords or recovery codes to someone claiming they can restore the account.
Procedures change and can vary by country and enforcement type. Check the current notice and help page before acting.
YouTube
For a Community Guidelines removal, sign in to YouTube Studio, open Content, find the video’s notice, and follow its appeal link. YouTube currently states that content-removal appeals can be made up to one year after removal, while warning and strike appeals can be made up to six months after issuance. It says a strike can be appealed only once; deleting the video does not clear a strike or restore the ability to appeal. Copyright takedowns use a different process. TikTok describes appeal options from the in-app notice for a removed post or account ban. Its guidance says deleting content does not remove strikes, and a strike may still be issued after deletion. For a locked or limited account, X says to follow the displayed steps to address the issue. If you believe a limitation is mistaken, use its support process to appeal. X distinguishes enforcement against a post from account-level actions, including suspension, so match the appeal to the action in your notice. For a Facebook copyright removal, follow the instructions in the notice. Meta’s copyright guidance distinguishes a standard appeal from a possible U.S. DMCA counter-notification; a counter-notification is a legal step, so seek qualified advice if you are unsure about its consequences. Meta announced an Oversight Board appeal route in 2021 for some content decisions after internal review. That announcement is historical, not confirmation that a particular case is eligible today. Check the current notice for any available route. Meta’s 2021 announcement
Instagram and Facebook procedures depend on the action and current account options; use the specific notice rather than assuming the same appeal path applies to both services.
Users in the European Union
Appeals Centre Europe’s March 2026 guide describes internal platform appeals under Article 20 and outlines differing steps by platform. Eligibility and any later dispute route depend on current rules, country, platform, and the action taken. Check the guide and current local coverage before relying on a particular route.
