Contact the hospital pharmacy and the clinician responsible for your treatment as soon as possible. Tell them when your next dose is due and whether you have any doses left. Ask what to do next; do not stop treatment, change your dose, or substitute a different medicine, strength, brand, or formulation without professional authorization.
What to do first
- Ask the hospital pharmacy what is unavailable. Confirm the prescribed medicine’s exact name, strength, formulation and quantity. Ask whether the stock problem is temporary, when supply is expected, and whether another authorized pharmacy or hospital can provide it under local rules.
- Contact your prescriber or treating team. Explain what the pharmacy said and ask whether a safe alternative, revised prescription, or other plan is appropriate. Suitability depends on the medicine, your condition, dose, formulation and medical history. UK guidance says pharmacies that cannot promptly supply a medicine should discuss available options with patients; it does not authorize patients to choose a substitute themselves (UK best-practice guidance).
- Make the timing clear. Say when the next dose is due, whether you have already missed a dose, and whether your symptoms are worsening. Ask specifically what to do while the supply issue is being resolved.
- Ask whether the shortage is local or wider. One hospital pharmacy being out of stock does not establish a national shortage. UK government guidance distinguishes local or temporary gaps from wider supply problems and directs health professionals to official shortage information, including the NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service Medicines Supply Tool (UK supply guidance). Outside the UK, check your health service or medicines regulator’s official shortage information.
If your next dose is due soon or you have run out
Do not wait for an ordinary appointment if the dose is due before you can get a response. Use your local health service’s urgent-care route and tell them the medicine, dose, when it was last taken, and when the next dose is due. If you have severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, use your local emergency service.

For England, NHS guidance lists NHS 111, a pharmacy, an urgent treatment centre, or the GP surgery as routes for help with an emergency prescription; it advises going to A&E for an emergency (NHS emergency prescriptions). These are England-specific routes, not universal instructions.

Can a pharmacist give you a different medicine?
Possibly, but only where the applicable rules and an authorized clinician or protocol allow it. In the UK, Serious Shortage Protocols permit specified alternatives under stated conditions; they are not a general permission for a pharmacist or patient to substitute any medicine at will (UK Serious Shortage Protocol review). Ask the treating team or pharmacist what authorization applies where you live, and whether the proposed option is suitable for your prescription.

What to say when you call
- “My prescribed medicine is [name, strength and form], and the hospital pharmacy says it is unavailable.”
- “My next dose is due at [time/date], and I have [number] doses remaining” or “I have run out.”
- “I have already missed [number] doses” if applicable, and “my symptoms are [stable/worsening].”
- “Is this a local stock issue or a wider shortage? When might it be available?”
- “What should I do before then, and do I need a revised prescription or another authorized service?”
Avoid unverified online sellers
Do not try to solve the shortage by buying from an unregistered website. NHS medicines information warns that medicines from unregistered sites may be out of date, diluted, fake or unsuitable (NHS medicines information). If an online pharmacy is considered, verify that it is licensed by the regulator in your jurisdiction and that it can legally dispense your prescription.
