A delayed or disputed prediction-market payout is handled under the specific contract’s rules—not a universal industry appeal process. Start by opening the market’s rule text, identify its settlement source and deadlines, check whether a challenge window is still open, preserve evidence, and contact the venue through its stated procedure. If the operator is a regulated entity and the issue remains unresolved, escalation may include the broker, designated contract market, National Futures Association (NFA), or Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), depending on the facts.
Do not treat a delay by itself as proof of misconduct. The underlying event may have happened while the contract’s defined settlement condition, source, or review period is still pending.

1. Read the exact contract before arguing the result
Open the market page, its Rules section, and any linked contract specifications. Prediction markets with similar titles can define the event differently, use different sources, or include exceptions that change the outcome. - The exact market title, URL, and contract or market identifier.
- The event definition, including geography, time zone, cutoff date, and any exclusions.
- The named resolution source, such as an official statistic, announcement, ruling, or other specified publication.
- The settlement trigger and the conditions for a “Yes,” “No,” or other outcome.
- Any language about corrections, postponements, cancellations, “too early” outcomes, unknown results, or ties.
- The stated procedure for proposing, challenging, reviewing, or finalizing a resolution.
Separate the real-world event from the contract’s test. A news report may confirm that something happened, yet the market can still be awaiting the exact source, reporting window, or exception described in the rules.
2. Check the market’s current state and every deadline
Look for a status such as open, proposed, challenged, resolved, finalized, or trading ended. Save a screenshot or PDF of the status and rules with a timestamp because interfaces can change as the contract advances.
A “proposed” result is not necessarily final. A market may have a short challenge period, followed by debate or voting. Conversely, a market that is already finalized may no longer accept an ordinary challenge. Ask support which stage applies to your position and what deadline controls.

Questions to answer immediately
- Has a resolution been proposed, or is the market still waiting for its resolution source?
- When did the challenge period start, and when does it end in the venue’s stated time zone?
- Is the displayed countdown based on a fixed deadline or on a later official publication?
- Has trading stopped, and does the contract say what happens to winning and losing shares?
- Does submitting a challenge require a bond, fee, identity check, or special account status?
Never rely on a deadline copied from another market. Terms can vary even within the same platform.

3. Build an evidence file that matches the rule
Good evidence connects a specific contract clause to an authoritative fact. Create one folder or document containing:
- The market page, rules, and order-book link as displayed when you reviewed them.
- Timestamped screenshots showing the proposed outcome, status, countdown, and your position or account statement.
- The official source named by the contract, including the publication date and relevant passage.
- Supporting records such as a government release, court document, league or election authority announcement, or other source expressly allowed by the rules.
- All support tickets, emails, chat transcripts, case numbers, and replies.
- A short timeline of the event, the market’s proposal, your challenge or support request, and every response.
State your interpretation narrowly: quote or paraphrase the controlling rule, identify the evidence that satisfies it, and explain any exception. Avoid arguing only that the broader event “obviously” occurred. The CFTC emphasizes that customers should receive transparent information about contract terms and how settlement determinations are made in its prediction-markets and event-contracts guidance.
4. Contact the venue before escalating
Use the platform’s official support channel or formal challenge link, not an unverified social-media account. Ask for a written answer to four questions:

- What stage is the contract in, and is the present delay expected under those terms?
- What deadline applies to a challenge, evidence submission, or appeal?
- Where should you submit documents, and what costs or financial risks apply?
Include your market URL, account identifier requested by the venue, a concise rule-based explanation, and links or attachments to the relevant official evidence. Keep the response and case number. If the first reply is generic, request escalation to the team responsible for settlement or contract rules and ask what additional information is needed.

Do not send passwords, private keys, seed phrases, or unnecessary identity documents. A legitimate support process should identify the information it needs and the channel for sending it.
How Polymarket’s published dispute process works
Polymarket’s process is an example of one venue’s rules, not a standard for all prediction markets. Its Help Center says markets are resolved by the UMA Optimistic Oracle according to the market’s pre-defined rules. When a market resolves, winning shares receive $1 per share and trading ends: Polymarket’s resolution article.
Challenge period
In an article published April 5, 2026, Polymarket says anyone can dispute a proposed resolution during a two-hour challenge period. The dispute link appears in the market’s Rules section. A disputer must post a challenge bond matching the proposer’s bond; the article says that amount is usually $750, but the live market terms control.

Debate and evidence
After a challenge, Polymarket describes a 24–48-hour debate period. Evidence may be contributed through the UMA Discord channels identified in the platform’s instructions. Follow the current market page for the permitted channel and submission format rather than assuming every market uses identical instructions.

UMA token-holder vote
Polymarket says UMA token holders then vote, a process that takes approximately 48 hours. The published possible outcomes are proposer wins, disputer wins, “Too Early,” and “Unknown/50-50.” The article labels “Unknown/50-50” a rarely used outcome but gives no frequency or success-rate statistic.
Financial risk and finality
Polymarket’s resolution guidance warns that an unsuccessful or premature proposal can lose the full $750 bond. The dispute article says the disputer posts a matching bond, usually $750. Treat those figures as the platform’s stated, commonly used amounts—not a guarantee for every market—and verify the current terms before committing funds.
Polymarket describes itself as non-custodial and says it cannot alter or reverse a resolution once UMA finalizes it. If the challenge window has expired or finalization has occurred, ordinary support contact may not reopen the result. If the venue, broker, or exchange is subject to U.S. derivatives regulation, the CFTC says customers may complain to their broker, the designated contract market, the NFA, or the CFTC. The appropriate route depends on which entity handled the contract and what happened. The CFTC also describes administrative complaint-resolution services for certain matters involving regulated entities; eligibility is case-dependent.
Use the regulator’s complaint information and attach your evidence file: CFTC prediction-market guidance. A complaint is a request for review, not a guaranteed reversal or payout. Explain the contract, the settlement decision or delay, the steps you took with the venue, and the remedy you are seeking.
What the CFTC’s enforcement advisory does—and does not—say
The CFTC’s February 25, 2026 advisory discusses its authority over illegal trading practices on designated contract markets and exchange duties such as audit trails, surveillance, and rule enforcement: CFTC Enforcement Division prediction-markets advisory. That material does not establish that every delayed settlement is an enforcement violation. A delay may reflect a contract-defined source, correction, challenge, or review step.
Compare procedures using the contract, not the brand name
When deciding what to do next, compare the actual terms on these six axes:

For another venue, fill these answers from its current contract and rulebook. A general complaint framework from a regulator cannot substitute for the venue’s operative contract terms. For example, a rulebook landing page may not display every settlement provision; rely on the contract governing your specific position.
Common mistakes that weaken a dispute
- Arguing the headline instead of the definition: The market may ask about a precise date, threshold, jurisdiction, or source.
- Waiting for support before checking the deadline: A reply can arrive after a challenge window closes.
- Submitting unsupported links: Use the source the contract names or expressly permits.
- Ignoring corrections and exceptions: Preliminary figures or later revisions may be treated differently.
- Assuming another platform’s timeline applies: The two-hour, 24–48-hour, and approximately 48-hour periods are Polymarket-specific.
- Risking a bond without reading the terms: An unsuccessful or premature action can forfeit the stated bond.
- Claiming misconduct from delay alone: Establish the rule, status, and explanation first.
A practical decision path
- Freeze the record: Save the rules, status, timestamps, account statement, and official event source.
- Classify the stage: waiting for a source, proposed, challengeable, under debate, under vote, resolved, or finalized.
- Calculate the deadline: Use the venue’s displayed time zone and current contract instructions.
- Choose the lowest-risk action: Ask support for clarification if the status is unclear; challenge only when the rule and evidence support it and you understand any bond.
- Submit a concise rule-based case: Identify the clause, evidence, requested correction, and attachments.
- Escalate with the complete record: If the venue does not resolve the issue, use the applicable broker, exchange, NFA, or CFTC channel.
- Stop adding exposure while facts are unclear: Do not trade additional positions solely to recover a disputed amount.
What a strong complaint should contain
Write a chronological, factual account rather than an accusation. Include:
- Your name and contact details required by the receiving organization.
- The venue, market title, URL, contract identifier, position, and dates.
- The exact settlement rule and source.
- The proposed or final outcome and the date it appeared.
- The evidence showing why the outcome conflicts with, or remains unresolved under, the rule.
- Your support requests, responses, and case numbers.
- The specific remedy sought, such as a rule-based review, correction, or explanation.
Redact passwords, private keys, full payment-card numbers, and unrelated personal information. Retain originals in case the receiving organization requests verification.
Limits of the available public data
Published guidance provides procedural windows and bond examples for Polymarket, but it does not establish an industry-wide average delay, dispute frequency, or appeal-success rate. No reliable universal timeline exists across prediction markets. The only defensible deadline is the one stated in the contract and displayed for your market at the time you act.
