What to Do if a Power Bank Overheats, Swells, or Starts Smoking

If a power bank is smoking or burning, move away, keep others away, avoid the smoke, and call your local emergency number from a safe place. Do not touch, pick up, or carry it. If it is swollen or unusually hot but there is no smoke or fire, stop using and charging it, avoid handling the damaged battery, and contact the manufacturer, retailer, or local waste authority for instructions. Never put a lithium-ion power bank in household rubbish or a recycling bin.

Identify the situation before you act

Power banks normally become warm during charging, but a sudden or extreme temperature rise, swelling, hissing, popping, smoke, leakage, strong odour, discoloration, or casing damage indicates a potentially dangerous battery fault. The U.S. Fire Administration lists bulging, rising temperature, popping or hissing, visible gases and mechanical damage as warning signs. Fire and Rescue NSW also identifies pungent smells, leaking electrolyte, extreme heat, smoke and fumes.

What you see What to do immediately
Smoke, flames, visible venting, or a burning smell with rapidly increasing heat Leave the area, warn others away, avoid fumes, and call the local emergency service. Do not touch or move the power bank.
Swelling, cracking, leaking, discoloration, or unusual heat without smoke or flames Stop using and charging it. Do not press, puncture, open, or handle a damaged battery. Obtain handling and disposal instructions from an appropriate authority.
It was smoking or burning but now appears to have stopped Treat it as an ongoing emergency. Stay clear and wait for emergency responders or follow their instructions; lithium-ion batteries can reignite.

If you cannot tell which category applies, choose the safer one: create distance, keep people away, and call the local fire service for advice.

If the power bank is smoking or on fire

Smoke or flames change this from a disposal problem into an emergency. Your priority is people, not saving the charger, cable, power bank or nearby property.

  1. Move away immediately. Leave the room or area, take other people and pets with you if you can do so without approaching the battery, and avoid breathing smoke or fumes. Warn anyone nearby not to enter.
  2. Call the emergency number from a safe location. Use the number for your jurisdiction and clearly say that a lithium-ion battery or power bank is smoking or burning. Do not assume that a number used in another country applies where you are.
  3. Do not touch, pick up, carry or kick the power bank. A hot, swollen or ruptured casing can expose you to severe heat or chemicals. Fire and Rescue NSW states: “Never touch a swollen or ruptured device or battery with bare hands as the heat and/or chemicals can cause severe burns.”
  4. Do not lean over it to inspect it. Keep clear even if the smoke becomes intermittent. A battery can vent suddenly, and fumes can remain hazardous.
  5. Do not return when visible smoke or flames stop. Fire and Rescue NSW warns that a battery may reignite after the apparent fire has ended. The Japanese Fire and Disaster Management Agency likewise tells people not to touch the product after flames are out while waiting for firefighters.

For a small device that is merely beginning to overheat while plugged in, Fire and Rescue NSW says it may be unplugged from the outlet only when that can be done safely. Do not reach through smoke, touch a damaged or very hot power bank, or put yourself between the device and an exit. Its guidance says moving a device outdoors is appropriate only when it can be done safely; never carry a smoking battery outside.

Do not improvise a firefighting procedure. The Japanese agency says initial firefighting should be attempted only when safety is secured and it is possible to do so. For everyone else, evacuation and a call to the local fire service are the dependable actions. Follow the dispatcher’s instructions rather than advice intended for a different country or building.

If it is swollen or unusually hot but not smoking

A swollen power bank has a physically damaged cell or casing and should not be treated as a usable battery. Health Canada advises consumers not to use batteries showing damage such as swelling or overheating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop charging and using it. If it is connected to power and you can disconnect the plug without touching the hot, swollen or leaking unit and without entering a hazardous area, do so. Otherwise leave it alone and create distance.
  2. Do not squeeze or straighten the casing. Never puncture, cut open, dismantle, crush or attempt to repair a swollen pack. Do not press buttons repeatedly or connect another device to test whether it still works.
  3. Keep people and flammable materials away. Until you receive professional instructions, leave the battery in a location judged safe for the circumstances, away from children, pets and combustible items. Do not place it in a cupboard, drawer, vehicle or other location where a developing incident could go unnoticed.
  4. Ask for case-specific instructions. Contact the power-bank manufacturer or retailer, your municipal waste service, or the local authority responsible for hazardous waste. Tell them that the unit is swollen, overheated, leaking or otherwise damaged; ordinary battery drop-off directions may not accept it.
  5. Escalate if conditions change. Smoke, hissing, popping, a rapidly rising temperature, flames or a strong chemical odour means you should stop trying to arrange disposal and follow the emergency steps above.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises keeping a swollen battery or device in a safe location until the correct management route is identified. The agency notes that a fire-suppressant-filled container or another location away from flammable materials may be considered in some circumstances, but that is not a universal instruction for every power bank. Use such an option only if the relevant authority specifically tells you it is suitable for your situation.

Warning signs that a battery fault is developing

Do not wait for visible flames before taking a damaged power bank seriously. Look for several kinds of change:

  • Physical change: bulging, swelling, cracks, a split seam, a loose casing or other mechanical damage.
  • Heat change: a temperature that rises rapidly or becomes extreme compared with normal charging warmth.
  • Sound: hissing, popping, sizzling or other abnormal noises.
  • Material release: smoke, fumes, visible gas or leaking electrolyte.
  • Appearance or smell: discoloration, scorching or an unusual pungent odour.

These signs can indicate a failure mode known as thermal runaway, in which a lithium-ion cell heats uncontrollably. The U.S. Fire Administration identifies thermal runaway as part of lithium-ion battery incidents and warns that mechanical damage and rising temperature are potential trouble signals. A power bank does not need to be visibly ablaze to require immediate precautions.

Disposal: why household bins are unsafe

Do not put a lithium-ion power bank, swollen battery or device containing one in household garbage or a normal recycling bin. The U.S. EPA warns that lithium-ion batteries can be damaged or crushed in collection and processing, creating fires. A battery that is already swollen, hot or leaking presents an even greater handling risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Instead, ask the product maker, retailer, municipal waste service or local hazardous-waste authority what route accepts a damaged lithium-ion battery. Describe the condition before you travel. A collection point that accepts intact household batteries may refuse a swollen or leaking power bank, and taking it there without prior approval can put workers and other customers at risk.

Do not mail, courier, leave at a kerbside collection, or place the power bank in a public drop box unless the responsible service has explicitly confirmed that it accepts that condition and has given you packaging and transport instructions. Do not abandon it outside or store it with other batteries. Follow the local authority’s directions exactly, including any requirement for a supervised hand-off.

Actions that can make the incident worse

  • Do not pick up a smoking, swollen, ruptured or very hot power bank.
  • Do not carry it through a building, put it in a bag, or place it in a car.
  • Do not cover it with clothing, bedding or other material.
  • Do not puncture, crush, open, tape, solder or repair the casing.
  • Do not reconnect a charger or device to see whether it still functions.
  • Do not use household garbage or recycling for the battery or the whole power bank.
  • Do not assume the danger has passed because smoke or flames stop.
  • Do not rely on emergency numbers, firefighting practices or disposal rules from another country.

Emergency numbers and local rules vary

Use the emergency number where the incident is happening. The numbers in official guidance are jurisdiction-specific examples: Fire and Rescue NSW directs people in Australia to Triple Zero (000), while the Japanese Fire and Disaster Management Agency directs people in Japan to 119. U.S. EPA guidance refers to calling 911 when a fire is imminent. These examples are not a universal number; if you are elsewhere, use your local fire or emergency service.

Waste rules also differ by city and country. A local authority can tell you whether it has a hazardous-battery program, whether damaged power banks are accepted, and whether a trained collector must retrieve the item. Do not substitute an ordinary battery-recycling instruction for damaged-battery guidance.

After responders or a waste authority take over

Do not resume using a power bank that has swollen, overheated, leaked, smoked or suffered physical damage, even if it later looks cool or appears to charge normally. Keep the charger and cable separate from the damaged unit and mention them when describing the incident; an authority or manufacturer can advise whether they also need to be removed from service.

If anyone has been exposed to smoke, fumes, heat or leaking material, move them to fresh air and seek medical or emergency advice appropriate to your location. For the battery itself, the safest endpoint is a documented hand-off to the manufacturer, retailer, fire service or waste authority that has confirmed it can manage the damaged lithium-ion unit.
