What to do if a Nintendo Switch 2 controller won’t charge or hold a charge

If a Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 will not charge, start with the power source and charging conditions: use the Switch 2 AC adapter (model NGN-01), attach the controller to the console, connect the console to power, and leave it on or in Sleep Mode. Check HOME Menu > Controllers for the battery level and charging icon. If charging fails, test the optional Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip (BEE-010) to determine whether the controller, console, adapter or grip is at fault. A controller that still will not charge, fully charge or retain charge needs Nintendo service.

Identify the controller and the correct power equipment

Nintendo Switch 2 uses Joy-Con 2 controllers. The charging instructions for these controllers are different from general USB-controller advice because the console and the optional grip rely on specific Switch 2 power equipment.

  • Switch 2 AC adapter: model MOD. NGN-01. Check the label on the adapter before troubleshooting.
  • Optional charging accessory: Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip, model BEE-010. It is sold separately and provides a second way to charge attached Joy-Con 2 controllers.

Do not assume that a Nintendo Switch adapter and a Switch 2 adapter are interchangeable for this test. Nintendo identifies different power output between the two generations. If the adapter is the wrong model, or if its cable, plug or connector is damaged, replace it with the correct Switch 2 adapter before drawing conclusions about the controller.

How Joy-Con 2 charging is supposed to work

Charging while attached to the console

Slide the Joy-Con 2 onto the Switch 2 console, then connect the console directly to the Switch 2 AC adapter and a wall outlet. The console must be powered on or in Sleep Mode. A fully powered-off console does not meet Nintendo’s stated condition for charging attached controllers.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Open HOME Menu > Controllers. The screen shows an approximate battery level for each connected controller and an icon indicating whether it is charging. Use that screen rather than relying only on an LED or on how the controller behaves in a game.

Expected charging time

Nintendo’s support instructions give an approximate full-charge time of three and a half hours for Joy-Con 2. The figure is a guide, not a guarantee for a damaged battery, a controller being used while charging, or a problem with the power path.

Charging with the BEE-010 Charging Grip

The separately sold Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip can charge Joy-Con 2 while they are attached to it. Nintendo documents powering the grip either through the Switch 2 dock with the cable supplied with the grip or directly from the Switch 2 AC adapter. The grip is an alternative charging route and a diagnostic tool; you do not need it if charging through the console works.

Step-by-step troubleshooting

  1. Disconnect the adapter completely. Unplug the Switch 2 AC adapter from the wall and from the console or dock. Examine the cable and connectors for cuts, fraying, bent or loose parts, severe kinks or other visible damage. Nintendo’s guidance is to replace a damaged adapter rather than continue using it.
  2. Verify the model. Confirm that the adapter is marked MOD. NGN-01, the Switch 2 adapter. A Switch adapter has different power output and should not be used as the reference adapter for this procedure.
  3. Reconnect directly. Attach the Joy-Con 2 firmly to the Switch 2. Connect the console directly to the verified adapter and connect the adapter to a wall outlet. Remove extra equipment from the charging path while testing.
  4. Use the required console state. Turn the console on or put it in Sleep Mode. Leave it connected to power; attached controllers charge under those conditions.
  5. Check the software indicator. Open HOME Menu > Controllers. Note both the approximate battery level and whether the charging icon appears. If the controller is not shown as charging, continue with the isolation tests below.
  6. Install the latest system update. Nintendo’s power troubleshooting says to ensure the console has the latest system software. Complete the update before treating an incorrect on-screen status as a hardware failure.
  7. Try another Switch 2 adapter, if available. Use another genuine Switch 2 AC adapter as a controlled test. This can separate an adapter fault from a console or controller fault; do not substitute a Switch (original) adapter for this comparison.
  8. Test the Charging Grip, if you have one. Confirm that it is model BEE-010. Attach the Joy-Con 2 to the grip and power the grip through the Switch 2 dock and its included cable, or directly through the Switch 2 AC adapter. Check the Controllers screen and the grip’s recharge LED.
  9. Interpret the result. Use the decision table below to identify the component that should be sent for service or replaced.

Use the two charging paths to locate the fault

Test result What it indicates Next action
Joy-Con 2 charges while attached to the console The controller, console connection and tested adapter can complete a charge Allow about three and a half hours for a full charge; if it later loses charge unusually quickly, follow the charge-retention service guidance
Joy-Con 2 charges in BEE-010 Charging Grip but not while attached to the console Nintendo says the console may need service Contact Nintendo for service support for the Switch 2 console
Joy-Con 2 does not charge on the console or in the BEE-010 grip The controller, adapter or another shared power component remains suspect Recheck the NGN-01 adapter and its condition; if the controller still fails, arrange Nintendo service for the affected controller
Joy-Con 2 charges on the console but not in the BEE-010 grip Nintendo identifies the charging grip as the likely item to replace Verify the grip is receiving power through the dock/cable or adapter, then replace the grip if the failure persists
Grip recharge LED turns off near the end of charging The controller battery may be approximately full Check the Controllers screen and battery level; an unlit LED alone does not prove that the grip failed

What to check when the console says it is not charging

Re-seat the controller

Detach the Joy-Con 2 and slide it back onto the console until it is fully attached. Then return to HOME Menu > Controllers. A controller that is only partially seated may not appear as charging even though it is physically close to the console.

Separate a display problem from a power problem

The Controllers screen reports an approximate level, not a laboratory measurement. Look for a change after leaving the console powered on or in Sleep Mode for a while. If the level does not increase and the charging icon never appears, continue with another adapter and the grip test rather than repeatedly restarting the console.

Check the adapter before blaming the battery

Inspect the NGN-01 adapter every time the problem follows the power source. Damage to the cord or connectors is a reason to replace the adapter. If a second, known-good Switch 2 adapter produces the same result, the controller or console becomes more likely than the original adapter.

Do not use the wrong generation’s adapter as a repair

The Switch and Switch 2 adapters have different power output. A controller that behaves differently with an older adapter does not provide a valid Switch 2 diagnostic result. Use the model specified for Switch 2 when testing.

When a Joy-Con 2 charges but will not hold charge

A controller can show a charging icon and still have a charge-retention fault. First allow the normal approximate charging period, then disconnect it and observe whether it retains usable power. If it never reaches a full charge, drops rapidly, or repeatedly returns to a low level, Nintendo’s power instructions direct you to service the affected controller.

Use the grip test only to isolate the charging path. If the controller charges in the grip but loses its charge afterward, the fact that the grip supplied power does not clear the controller’s battery. The retention symptom follows the controller and is a service issue under Nintendo’s stated threshold.

If the Charging Grip itself appears not to work

Confirm the accessory and its power connection

Check that the accessory is the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip, model BEE-010. Connect it to the Switch 2 dock with the cable included with the grip, or connect it directly to the Switch 2 AC adapter as Nintendo documents. A grip with no power connection cannot charge the attached controllers.

Read the LED together with the console status

Nintendo says the grip’s recharge LED may turn off when the controller battery is approximately full. Therefore, an LED that is off after charging is not by itself evidence of failure. Check the battery level and charging status in HOME Menu > Controllers.

Decide whether the grip should be replaced

If the Joy-Con 2 charge normally while attached to the Switch 2 console but do not charge in the correctly powered BEE-010 grip, Nintendo identifies the grip as the likely item to replace. If the grip test instead succeeds while console charging fails, the console may need service; the grip is not a universal fix.

Service decision and preparation

Contact Nintendo for service when any of these conditions remains after the adapter, console power state, software status and alternate charging path have been checked:

  • The affected Joy-Con 2 still will not charge.
  • It charges but never reaches a full charge.
  • It charges but does not retain charge.
  • It charges in the BEE-010 grip but not when attached to the console, indicating a possible console fault.

When requesting support, describe the exact test result: the adapter model used, whether the console was on or in Sleep Mode, what the Controllers screen displayed, and whether the controller charged in the BEE-010 grip. This information helps distinguish a controller service case from a console or accessory case.

Quick checklist

  • Use a Switch 2 AC adapter marked MOD. NGN-01.
  • Replace any adapter with cuts, fraying, loose connectors or other damage.
  • Attach the Joy-Con 2 to the console and connect the console to wall power.
  • Keep the console powered on or in Sleep Mode while charging.
  • Check HOME Menu > Controllers for the approximate level and charging icon.
  • Install the latest Switch 2 system update.
  • Try another genuine Switch 2 adapter when available.
  • Use the BEE-010 Charging Grip as an optional second charging route.
  • Remember that a grip LED can turn off when the battery is approximately full.
  • Send the affected controller or console to Nintendo service when the failure persists or charge is not retained.

Bottom line

Start with the NGN-01 adapter and the correct power state, then verify charging in the Controllers screen. The BEE-010 grip is useful because it separates a console charging-path problem from a controller problem, but it is optional. Persistent failure to charge, fully charge or hold charge is Nintendo’s threshold for service.
