Do not immediately factory-reset or power-cycle every Meraki device. First allow the documented upgrade window, identify whether the device is still rebooting, and separate a cloud-management problem from an actual client-traffic outage. Meraki devices normally keep forwarding traffic while firmware downloads, briefly interrupt clients during reboot, and can revert to the previous firmware when they cannot restore Internet and Meraki cloud connectivity. If the network remains unhealthy after that process, use the Dashboard rollback to the previous version when it is offered, or investigate the specific WAN, DNS, firewall, power and upstream path instead of making a network-wide change.
What the interruption usually means
Meraki firmware upgrades have two distinct phases. The device downloads the new image while continuing normal operation. Client connectivity is interrupted during the reboot, when the device loads the new image and performs recovery checks. After reboot, it tests Internet access and reachability to the Meraki cloud. If required connectivity is not restored, the device is designed to return to its previous firmware rather than remain on an unusable image.

That behavior creates several different symptoms that look similar in a hurry: a short client outage while the device reboots, a longer delay while a busy link finishes downloading, a device that has reverted but has not yet appeared correctly in Dashboard, or a device that is forwarding locally while its cloud-management connection is unavailable. Treating all of these as “the firmware broke the network” can lead to an unnecessary reset or a second, wider outage.

Allow the normal upgrade window
For a typical wired Meraki device on a fast Internet connection, the vendor describes the complete process as taking under 11 minutes. The download may take approximately 10 minutes or less, followed by about one minute for reboot and recovery. These are process estimates, not a guaranteed outage duration or service-level agreement. A shared or congested Internet link can lengthen the download, and Dashboard may take additional minutes to refresh its status.

Write down the upgrade start time and wait through that estimate before intervening, unless there is a separate safety issue such as overheating, repeated power cycling or a known upstream failure. Do not repeatedly reboot a device that may still be downloading or validating its image.
Define exactly what is affected
- Record the product family and model: MX security appliance, MS switch, MR access point or another Meraki family.
- List the devices and serials that were scheduled together, along with their old and target firmware versions.
- Determine whether every client is affected or only clients connected through one switch, access point, VLAN, site or uplink.
- Note the upgrade and reboot events shown in Dashboard, including any failed-upgrade or power-related event.
- Test more than one client and, where possible, both wired and wireless paths so a single endpoint problem is not mistaken for a network outage.
A single affected access point calls for a targeted check. An MX that serves the site’s Internet edge can affect every downstream service and deserves a different, more cautious path.
Separate Dashboard reachability from client forwarding
Meraki’s cloud management architecture is out-of-band. A cloud alert does not, by itself, prove that client data forwarding has stopped. A WAN failure, a Meraki data-center incident, or an Internet-routing problem between the site and the cloud can prevent Dashboard communication while local traffic continues to pass. Conversely, a device can be visible in Dashboard while a failed uplink, VLAN or switch path disrupts clients.

| Observed state | What it suggests | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Device is online in Dashboard; clients briefly lost service during the scheduled reboot | Normal upgrade interruption is likely | Confirm the new firmware, event timing and client recovery before changing anything |
| Device is cloud-offline, but local clients still reach one another or the Internet | Out-of-band cloud connectivity, WAN routing, DNS, firewall inspection or a temporary Dashboard issue may be involved | Check local WAN and upstream status; do not assume a client outage from the cloud alert alone |
| Device is offline locally and remotely; clients behind it are down | Power, link, upstream, failed reboot or device-level fault is possible | Inspect power, cabling, uplinks and neighboring equipment for that device only |
| Only clients behind one switch, AP or port are affected | Scope is probably local to that path rather than the entire firmware campaign | Check that device’s events, uplink and client VLAN before touching the MX or the whole site |
Check the device and upstream path before changing configuration
Dashboard and local checks
- Open the affected device’s details page in Dashboard and note its online or offline state, current firmware and last-seen time.
- Open its event log and look for firmware-download, upgrade, reboot, failed-upgrade, uplink, power or connectivity events around the scheduled window.
- If Dashboard cannot reach the device, use the model’s local status page or onsite management method, when available, to inspect WAN address, link state, DNS status and local connectivity.
- Check the upstream port, cable, SFP or PoE source for the affected device. Compare link lights and switch events with a known-good port rather than disconnecting multiple devices at once.
- Test the path beyond the device: WAN handoff, modem or carrier circuit, default route, DNS resolution and any firewall policy that could block outbound Meraki management traffic.
Meraki documents several causes for cloud-connectivity loss that are independent of firmware: WAN failure, an outage at a Meraki data center, Internet routing trouble, blocked outbound firewall access, invalid or unreachable DNS responses, and traffic inspection by an ISP modem. A temporary Dashboard outage can produce a similar management symptom. Check these possibilities before concluding that the image itself is defective.
MR access-point-specific cloud checks
For an MR access point that cannot reach the cloud, verify that outbound connections required by Meraki are permitted and that the configured DNS servers return valid answers. Inspect any ISP modem or security appliance performing traffic inspection, filtering or captive-portal behavior. If the AP can serve local wireless traffic but is absent from Dashboard, preserve that service while repairing the management path; do not factory-reset it merely because the cloud view is stale.
Use automatic revert or Dashboard rollback safely
Recognize an automatic revert
Meraki keeps the old and new firmware available in parallel. If the new image cannot load correctly or the device cannot restore the required Internet and cloud connectivity after reboot, it is designed to return to the previous image. A device that comes back on its old version is evidence that the recovery safeguard worked, not proof that every cause has been removed. Confirm the running version and inspect the event log before rescheduling an upgrade.

Roll back a recent upgrade
If the device is online and the network remains unhealthy after the upgrade, use the built-in Dashboard workflow:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Sign in with an administrator account that can manage firmware.
- Go to Organization > Monitor > Firmware upgrades.
- Locate the recent upgrade and review the affected network, device family, target version and event timing.
- Choose the rollback action when Dashboard presents it, confirm the affected scope and schedule the change for the least disruptive window available.
- Watch the device through download, reboot and recovery. Confirm that it returns online, reports the previous firmware and restores the client path.
Meraki’s Managing Firmware Upgrades documentation describes this rollback as returning to the previous version and states that it is available within 14 days of a recent upgrade. Verify that the current Dashboard still offers the action for your network; availability is not a promise that any arbitrary older version can be selected.
Rollback availability can be constrained by firmware family, version, topology and enabled features. For example, MR mixed-firmware guidance notes that downgrade can be locked while certain features are enabled. If the button is missing, do not substitute a model-agnostic reset procedure or manually force an image from an unrelated family.

Sequence MX and MS recovery in the right order
In a design with an MX security appliance and downstream MS switches, Meraki recommends upgrading the MX first. Wait until the MX is online on the new firmware and passing Internet traffic, then upgrade the downstream switches. This order reduces the chance that switches lose the upstream path they need during their own download and recovery process.
Switch download and back-off behavior is intended to give devices time to obtain firmware before upstream equipment reboots. If an MX and multiple switches were changed together and the site is unstable, stabilize the MX and its WAN path first. Then address one switch or switch group at a time, beginning with the device that serves the affected clients.

Choose an MR upgrade strategy that matches the outage tolerance
MR deployments have a specific Dashboard choice for how access points reboot. The “Minimize client downtime” strategy staggers AP upgrades so clients are less likely to lose all nearby radios at once. “Minimize total upgrade time” can reboot APs at nearly the same time, shortening the campaign but increasing the chance of a broader wireless interruption. Meraki documents this strategy feature beginning with MR 26.8. Select the option that matches the site’s redundancy and roaming design, and account for whether neighboring APs can carry clients while one unit reboots.
Best Value
Compare the recovery choices before acting
| Choice | Use when | Scope and risk | What to verify afterward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wait and observe | The upgrade is still within the estimated process window and events show download or reboot activity | Lowest operational risk; clients may remain interrupted until recovery finishes | Device returns online, reports intended version and clients reconnect |
| Repair WAN, DNS, firewall or upstream path | Cloud is unreachable, local status shows a path problem, or clients fail independently of the firmware event | Targeted network repair; changing policies can affect other services | Stable Internet, DNS resolution, permitted outbound management traffic and normal Dashboard reachability |
| Dashboard rollback | The device is online but the recent upgrade correlates with persistent network trouble and rollback is offered | Targeted return to the previous version; causes another controlled reboot | Previous version is running and the original client impact is gone |
| Power or physical inspection | The device is locally unreachable and there are signs of link, PoE, power or hardware trouble | Limited to the affected device when performed carefully; repeated power cycling can prolong recovery | Stable power, link negotiation, uplink and boot events |
| Support escalation | Device remains offline, rollback is unavailable, or family/version behavior is unclear | Safest option for model-specific recovery; provide complete evidence first | A documented support plan and confirmed firmware path |
What not to do during a firmware-related outage
- Do not factory-reset an MX, MS or MR simply because Dashboard has not refreshed.
- Do not reboot the entire site while one device may still be downloading or reverting.
- Do not assume that a cloud-offline alert means client forwarding is down.
- Do not force a downgrade to an arbitrary image or disable features blindly to make a rollback button appear.
- Do not upgrade downstream MS switches before confirming that their MX upstream is healthy on its new firmware.
- Do not change WAN, DNS or firewall policy without recording the original settings and testing the smallest affected path.
When to escalate to Meraki Support
Escalate when an MX, MS or MR remains offline after the expected process and basic path checks, when the device repeatedly reboots, when an upgrade event reports failure, or when Dashboard offers no safe rollback. The correct procedure depends on the product family, model, firmware versions, enabled features and topology; there is no single reset sequence that is safe for all Meraki devices.
Include the following in the case so support can work from evidence rather than a broad symptom:
- Organization, network, affected device models and serial numbers.
- Previous and target firmware versions, scheduled time and actual reboot times.
- Dashboard online or offline state, last-seen time and relevant event-log entries.
- Whether all clients or only one VLAN, AP, switch, port or site were affected.
- WAN link, default-route, DNS-resolution, firewall and upstream checks, including any modem inspection.
- Whether the device automatically reverted or a Dashboard rollback was attempted, and the result.
- Any power, PoE, cabling, carrier or data-center incident observed at the same time.
Prevent a repeat outage
Plan upgrade order and blast radius
Separate MX and downstream MS changes, confirm the MX’s new-firmware health before touching switches, and use smaller device groups when a failure would affect many clients. For MR, choose staggered AP upgrades when wireless coverage cannot tolerate simultaneous reboots.
Recommended Free Tools
Make the recovery path observable
Before the maintenance window, record device versions, uplinks, WAN and DNS settings, support contacts and the Dashboard location of the firmware workflow. During the window, monitor event logs and client impact rather than relying only on the organization-wide status banner. Keep an onsite or out-of-band way to inspect power and cabling if a device disappears from both Dashboard and local service.
Bottom line
A Meraki firmware interruption is usually resolved by distinguishing the normal reboot from a failed upstream or cloud path. Wait through the vendor’s estimated download-and-recovery window, verify the affected scope, inspect WAN/DNS/firewall and local status, and use Dashboard’s previous-version rollback only when it is offered and the recent upgrade is the credible cause. Preserve targeted changes, respect MX–MS sequencing and MR downtime strategy, and escalate with model, version and event evidence when the device does not recover.
