Ask for the exact deficiency, the deadline and accepted ways to meet it, and whether liquidation has started or been scheduled. Read your margin agreement before acting, but do not assume the broker must wait for you, accept a particular deposit or sale, or let you choose which securities are sold.
FINRA warns that a firm may liquidate securities without contacting you first, may sell different assets than the ones you would choose, and may leave you responsible for a remaining debit. The steps below explain how to establish the facts quickly and make a deliberate decision about continuing to use borrowed funds. This is general U.S. investor education, not individualized investment, tax or legal advice.

Take these steps first
- Verify the notice. Sign in through the brokerage’s normal website or app, or call the number printed on an account statement. Do not send money or disclose credentials in response to an unsolicited call, text or email. A genuine notice should be visible in the account or confirmable through an official channel.
- Ask for the account-specific deficiency. Request the current dollar amount needed to restore the account, how the firm calculated it, and whether the figure can change while markets are moving. A margin call is not a universal amount; it depends on your positions, loan balance, the firm’s requirements and the account’s current equity.
- Get the deadline and response method in writing. Ask for the exact date and time, the time zone, and which methods the firm will credit in time. Confirm whether a wire, electronic transfer, check, sale of securities or another method is accepted, and how long each method normally takes to become available.
- Ask whether liquidation has begun. Find out whether orders have already been entered, whether automatic sales are scheduled, and whether the firm can continue selling before your payment or transfer settles. Ask what happens if the firm sells positions and a debit remains.
- Read the margin agreement and current notices. Look for the firm’s house maintenance requirements, collateral rules, liquidation language and provisions allowing requirements to change. A broker’s house requirement can be higher than a regulatory baseline and can change, particularly during volatile markets.
- Record the conversation. Save the notice, account screenshots, representative’s name or identification number, the time of the call and the instructions you received. If the firm gives a confirmation number or secure message, retain it.
FINRA’s investor guidance states: “If you receive a margin call, act promptly to satisfy the margin call.” FINRA, “Margin Debt at Record Levels: Know the Risks”.
Why the broker’s answer controls the immediate situation
Your account agreement and the firm’s current requirements govern the call. Regulatory minimums are only a floor; a firm can impose higher “house” requirements and can change them without advance notice. Because the value of collateral can move while you are arranging funds, the amount quoted earlier in the day may no longer be sufficient when the broker processes your response.

Do not rely on an internet calculator or on another investor’s experience to determine your deadline. Ask the firm to state the deficiency and the remedy it will recognize for this account at this moment. If you have more than one margin account, confirm which account received the call; requirements and available collateral are account-specific.
Can a broker sell stocks without asking first?
Yes. FINRA says a firm may force the sale of securities when account equity falls below an applicable maintenance requirement or the firm’s higher house requirement. The firm may liquidate without contacting you first. It may also sell after giving you a date to act if market conditions or its agreement permit it. You are not guaranteed an extension, and you are not guaranteed the right to select which securities are sold.
That means a plan such as “I will deposit money tomorrow” or “I will sell a different holding” does not, by itself, stop liquidation. Only the broker can confirm whether your chosen action will be credited before its deadline and whether it has paused or cancelled any sale instructions.

Why liquidation may not end the debt
A sale converts holdings into cash, but it does not guarantee that the proceeds will cover the margin loan and all amounts the firm says are due. If the account still has a debit after positions are sold, you can remain responsible for that shortfall. You can therefore lose the securities and still owe money. Do not assume that adding an amount equal to the initial call caps your possible loss; changing prices, interest and execution can alter the final balance.
Questions to put to the brokerage representative
Use a written list so a fast-moving call does not leave an important uncertainty unresolved.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What is the deficiency right now, and what equity or collateral level must be restored? | Establishes the firm’s current calculation rather than relying on a generic percentage. |
| What is the firm’s deadline, including time zone and settlement cutoff? | A transfer that is initiated before the deadline may not be credited before the cutoff. |
| Which payment or position-reduction methods will you accept for this call? | Different methods can have different processing and availability times. |
| Has liquidation started, been scheduled or been assigned to an automated process? | Determines whether the firm may sell before your action is completed. |
| Can you confirm that a specific transfer or sale will satisfy the call before it is executed? | Prevents treating an intended action as a guarantee. |
| If positions are sold, what debit could remain and how will I be notified? | Clarifies your continuing obligation if proceeds do not cover the loan. |
| Which margin and house requirements apply to my account today? | Shows whether a firm-specific rule, rather than a baseline rule, caused the call. |
Ask the representative to send the answer through the secure message system or to identify the agreement section that controls. If the firm will not promise a pause in liquidation, treat the sale risk as ongoing while you decide.

Evaluate the available responses without assuming one is universally best
The broker may accept one or more of the following responses. Your agreement, the deadline and the firm’s confirmation determine what is actually available. The choice should account for speed, certainty of credit, the effect on your loan and your ability to absorb a further loss.
| Possible response | What it can accomplish | Important uncertainty |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer or deposit eligible funds | May increase account equity or reduce the debit if the firm credits the funds in time. | The firm may require a particular method, and a pending transfer may not count before the deadline. A deposit does not guarantee that liquidation will stop. |
| Sell securities voluntarily | May produce proceeds to reduce the loan or restore required equity. | You may not be able to choose the timing or security that the firm ultimately sells. Prices can move before execution and settlement. |
| Use a combination of funds and sales | Can address a shortfall when one source alone is insufficient. | Each component must be accepted and credited under the firm’s timing rules; the deficiency can change while both are pending. |
| Ask for an extension | Gives the firm an opportunity to state whether it will allow additional time. | FINRA says an extension is not guaranteed. Continue planning as though liquidation could occur unless the broker confirms otherwise. |
This is a process decision, not a prompt to select a particular stock. If selling a position would create a separate tax or investment consequence, obtain advice appropriate to your circumstances, but do not delay the broker call while seeking a perfect allocation decision. The immediate questions are whether the firm will accept the action and whether it will arrive before liquidation.
If the broker has already started selling
- Ask for the status. Request the order time, whether orders are open or filled, and the current estimated account balance. The representative may not be able to reverse an executed trade.
- Do not place offsetting trades automatically. A new order can increase exposure, create additional costs or conflict with the firm’s liquidation process. Confirm with the broker what, if anything, remains necessary.
- Confirm the post-sale debit. Ask how proceeds will be applied to the loan and when the final amount will be calculated. If the balance is negative, ask how and when payment is due.
- Save every confirmation. Keep trade confirmations, statements and messages showing the securities sold, execution prices and resulting debit. These records help you reconcile the account and raise a specific service or statement question.
Liquidation can occur at unfavorable prices, and the firm may choose assets you intended to keep. The practical objective after a sale is to determine the final obligation and prevent the account from accumulating a new, unauthorized debit—not to assume that a later market rebound will repair the balance.

Understand the difference between a margin account and a cash account
Margin borrowing lets a brokerage lend against securities, which creates a loan that must be protected when collateral values fall. The trade-off is that losses can exceed the amount you originally deposited, and the firm can require additional equity or sell collateral on its own timetable.
FINRA’s “Guidance on Margin” flyer recommends that investors understand how margin works, learn their firm’s policies, keep accessible cash if they use margin and consider limiting investing to a cash account if they do not understand margin or do not want this exposure. The flyer says a cash account is not subject to margin calls. Moving to or opening a cash account is not an instant fix for an existing debit; ask the broker how it would handle any outstanding loan and pending trades.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA useful post-call review
- List every margin loan, interest charge and security pledged as collateral.
- Identify how quickly you could access funds without relying on a sale that may settle later.
- Decide what account-level loss and payment obligation you could tolerate in another sharp decline.
- Read the firm’s notification and liquidation provisions again, including any right to raise house requirements without advance notice.
- Ask the broker to explain how to disable margin borrowing or establish a cash account if you choose not to continue with this exposure.
Do not confuse a decision to reduce future borrowing with satisfaction of the current call. The existing deficiency and any remaining debit still have to be resolved under the agreement.

Special note for active intraday traders in 2026
FINRA’s April 20, 2026 explainer says revised intraday margin requirements became effective June 4, 2026. Under the new requirements described there, eligible long equity securities have a 25% minimum equity requirement throughout the trading day. Firms have a permitted transition period through October 20, 2027.
This 25% figure is a dated rule-change detail for eligible active intraday activity, not a universal margin-call amount for every account or every security. Ask your broker whether the revised requirements apply to your strategy, which transition stage the firm is using and how the change affects your account. The firm’s own agreement and current notifications remain controlling. See FINRA’s “Understanding the New Intraday Margin Requirements”.
Prevent the next call from becoming an emergency
Once the account is stable, set a written rule for how much borrowed exposure you are willing to carry and what accessible funds would be available if prices fall. Monitor the firm’s messages rather than relying only on market alerts; a house requirement can change even when a security’s price has not moved by the amount you expected.

Investors who do not want the possibility of a margin call can discuss using a cash account with their broker.
When to seek additional help
Contact the broker’s compliance or service escalation channel if the amount on a notice conflicts with the figure in the account, a promised transfer is not credited, or a trade confirmation does not match the liquidation you were told about. Keep the issue factual and provide dates, account documents and confirmation numbers. For questions about a personal tax consequence, debt collection, bankruptcy or a possible dispute, consult a qualified professional; those issues cannot be resolved by assuming the margin call rules are the same for every account.
