Do not pay the same invoice again while the first attempt is marked pending or in flight. Open the payment details, record the status and identifier, and determine whether the attempt is still resolving or has reached a final failure. An in-flight Lightning payment may have an HTLC locked along its route; it must settle with a preimage or time out, so there is no universal cancel button or guaranteed resolution time.
If the payment has failed, verify the invoice and recipient before retrying. If the cost looks high, compare the amount delivered with the total amount sent, then review your wallet’s fee limit and route estimate before making another attempt. Routing fees are set by the nodes on the path, not by a single network-wide flat rate.

First, identify the payment state
“Pending,” “in flight,” “failed,” and “succeeded” describe different conditions. The correct next step depends on which state your wallet reports, not on how long the payment appears on screen.

A screen that says “pending” is not proof that the recipient was paid, and it is not proof that the money is permanently lost. It means the attempt has not reached a final state.

Step-by-step recovery procedure
1. Record the payment before changing anything
Write down the invoice or payment identifier, amount, currency unit, recipient, creation time, wallet name and version, and the exact status or error text. Screenshots are useful, but redact QR codes, invoices that are still payable, account identifiers, and any personal information before posting them publicly.
Never give support staff a seed phrase, private key, recovery phrase, wallet password, or channel backup that contains secrets. Legitimate troubleshooting normally needs a payment hash or an application log excerpt, not signing credentials.
2. Inspect the sending wallet’s payment details
Open the wallet’s payment history, select the transaction, and expand the technical details. Look for a final state, payment hash, total sent, amount received, fee, route failure, and any retry or cancellation control. Consumer wallet interfaces use different labels; a spinning icon alone is not enough information to decide that a payment can be retried.

3. If it is pending or in flight, wait without duplicating the payment
When an HTLC has been locked into a route, the payment must resolve through the recipient’s preimage or through timeout handling. A receiver that has not revealed the preimage, or a route node that has gone offline, can delay resolution. Lightning Labs’ payment guidance describes this situation as a “stuck payment”: it cannot be retried while unresolved, and the sender may need to wait for it to become failed or successful.
The documentation does not establish one cancellation command or a universal number of minutes that applies to every wallet. Keep the wallet open or synchronized as its provider recommends, note any changes in status, and ask the wallet provider whether it has a documented recovery procedure for that payment hash. Do not send a second payment against the same invoice merely because the recipient says they have not seen it yet; the first attempt could still settle later.
4. Retry only after a final failure
Once the wallet shows a terminal failure, check the invoice’s expiry and confirm the destination, amount, and denomination. Ask the recipient for a fresh invoice if the old one is expired, already paid, or was generated for a different amount. A route failure that occurs before an HTLC is locked can normally be retried according to the wallet’s instructions. That guidance does not apply to an attempt still marked in flight.

If the first attempt failed for “no route,” waiting briefly, using a different connected wallet path, or asking the recipient for another invoice may help; none guarantees that a route will exist.

Why a Lightning payment can appear stuck
Route-level failures
Lightning payments usually travel through several channels. A node along the selected route can lack the required outbound liquidity, reject the fee or timelock, disconnect, or fail to forward the HTLC. The sending wallet may try alternate routes, leaving the overall payment in an in-flight state while individual attempts fail.
Recipient and invoice conditions
An incorrect payment hash, expired invoice, mismatched amount, or recipient that is offline can prevent settlement. A recipient may also have received a notification while the sender’s wallet has not yet updated its local status. Treat the wallet’s payment record as the authoritative state for deciding whether another payment is safe.
Multi-part payment behavior
A multi-part payment splits one invoice across multiple routes. Some parts can succeed while another part is still resolving, so the overall transaction may remain pending. Because each route can cross different forwarding nodes, the fee can include more than one base charge. Do not assume that splitting a payment always lowers its cost.
Why the amount sent can exceed the amount received
Forwarding nodes set their own fees. A fee can contain a fixed base amount for each forwarded HTLC and a variable rate based on the amount being forwarded. A multi-hop route can therefore accumulate charges at several nodes. A multi-part payment can also incur several base fees because it uses multiple routes.

Use the wallet’s detailed receipt to compare the destination amount with the sender’s total. Core Lightning exposes this distinction with fields such as amount_msat (the amount delivered to the destination) and amount_sent_msat (the total sent, including fees). The difference is the actual routing cost for that attempt; it is not a universal Lightning fee that applies to every wallet or route.
Illustrative example: if an invoice requests 100,000 millisatoshis and the receipt shows 102,500 millisatoshis sent, the implied routing cost is 2,500 millisatoshis. This arithmetic is only an example; use the values in your own payment details.

A fee limit tells the wallet the most you are willing to pay for routing. It protects against an unexpectedly expensive route, but a limit that is too low can eliminate every available route.

There is no evidence-based universal cap that is safe for every payment. The acceptable maximum depends on the invoice amount, urgency, available routes, and your own willingness to pay. Compare attempts using four values: maximum fee accepted, total amount sent, amount received, and the wallet’s final route or fee error.
Do not force-close a channel to clear a payment
A channel force close is a unilateral channel operation, not a payment-cancellation control. Closing a channel can change your liquidity and may temporarily lock the closing party’s funds before they can be redeemed. It does not guarantee that a pending payment will settle or disappear.
Use channel-management tools only when you are deliberately recovering a channel and understand the consequences. For an ordinary unresolved payment, continue tracking the payment hash and work with the wallet or node operator. Escalate channel problems separately from payment status problems.
How to contact support safely and effectively
Send support the smallest useful set of facts: wallet and version, operating system or device type, payment hash or identifier, invoice age, amount, current state, and exact error text. State whether the recipient has confirmed receipt and whether the wallet shows a fee or route failure.

- Do not send a seed phrase, private key, PIN, password, or full wallet backup.
- Do not publish a still-valid invoice or QR code in a public forum.
- Ask whether the provider can identify an in-flight HTLC and what its documented timeout or recovery process is.
- Keep the app or node updated only through its normal trusted distribution channel; do not install “recovery” software offered by an unsolicited helper.
If the wallet reports success but the recipient cannot locate the payment, provide the payment hash so the recipient can search their node. If it reports failure, retain the failure reason and timestamp in case a later retry produces a different result.
A concise decision checklist
- Open payment history and record the identifier, amount, time, status, and error.
- If the state is pending or in flight, do not pay the invoice again; monitor it and contact the provider for a wallet-specific procedure.
- If the state is succeeded, compare the amount received with the total sent and calculate the fee difference.
- If the state is failed, verify invoice validity, recipient, amount, and available balance before retrying.
- Set a fee maximum you accept and review the wallet’s current route estimate; avoid a zero-fee constraint unless that is intentional.
- Do not force-close a channel as a substitute for payment recovery.
This sequence separates a payment that is still contractually resolving from one that is safe to retry, while giving you a factual way to investigate an unexpectedly high fee.
