First, treat the fill as real exposure. Check your current Futures position and open orders, then reconcile the order ID and filled quantity against Kraken’s order-status and fills records. Do not submit a replacement order while the cancellation and execution state is uncertain. On markets with Kraken’s Maker Protection, a cancellation can be acknowledged while a held aggressive order is later released and trades. Kraken’s documentation states: “A canceled held order can still fill.”
1. Stabilize the account before investigating
A cancellation request and an execution are separate events. Until the account records prove otherwise, assume the contract position changed and manage the resulting risk.

- Open the current Futures position view. Record the contract, side, size, entry price, mark price, leverage, margin mode and liquidation-related figures. If the position is larger than expected, do not wait for historical reconciliation before deciding whether you need to reduce exposure.
- Check open orders. Look for a remaining order, a replacement created by an automated strategy, or an order with a different client identifier. A missing order from the open-orders list does not prove that it never traded.
- Stop duplicate placement. Do not retry the original order or place an offsetting order merely because the interface showed a cancel acknowledgment. First establish what quantity executed.
- Write down UTC times. Preserve the order-submission time, cancel-request time, cancel acknowledgment, any fill time and the time you observed the position. Screenshots can help, but retain the underlying identifiers and event payloads when available.
If the position is still open and the discrepancy could create a material loss, use your normal risk controls first. Historical investigation cannot undo a market execution.
2. Why a canceled Kraken Futures order can still execute
Kraken documents a specific explanation for this behavior: Maker Protection. It is enabled only on selected derivatives markets, so it is not a universal explanation for every Futures order that appears to fill after cancellation. Check the current setting for the exact contract before applying this explanation.

Maker Protection can hold an aggressive order before releasing it to the order book. The public API does not expose a separate “held” status, and Kraken warns that aggressive orders can experience extra latency. The configured protection interval can change; use the market’s makerProtectionMillis value rather than assuming a fixed delay.
When a held order is canceled, the cancel event and the held order’s own response are separate. A held limit order can be released as immediate-or-cancel: it may take available liquidity and discard the remainder. A held IOC, FOK or market order can return ORDER_NOT_FOUND to a cancel request and still arrive at release. Kraken’s current Maker Protection documentation says the described window is at most 100 milliseconds, but verify the live market configuration before relying on that number.
Kraken also states that every perpetual listed after September 24, 2026 has Maker Protection from launch. That launch rule applies to those newly listed perpetuals, not automatically to every Futures contract or to an order placed on an earlier market. Market coverage and settings should be checked for the specific order.

What the behavior does not prove
- It does not prove that every delayed-looking fill was caused by Maker Protection.
- It does not mean a cancel request reverses an execution that has already occurred.
- It does not make a vanished order equivalent to a canceled order; you must compare execution records.
- It does not justify sending the order again. Kraken specifically says, in the Maker Protection context, “Do not retry the placement after a successful cancel.”
3. Reconcile the order using the right record
Use more than one record. The position shows current exposure; order status shows the order’s state; fills show the executions that created or changed that exposure.

Fields that should agree
- Contract symbol and buy/sell side
- Original order ID and, if used, client order ID
- Requested quantity, cumulative executed quantity and remaining quantity
- Each fill ID, execution price and fill timestamp in UTC
- Final order status and the cancel acknowledgment
- Resulting position size and direction
A fill record is the decisive evidence that a trade occurred. A cancel acknowledgment is evidence that Kraken accepted or processed a cancel message; it is not, by itself, proof that no quantity could execute.
4. A practical investigation in the Kraken interface
The web interface does not require an API key. Use the account’s Futures order, position and trade-history views, and record the exact identifiers shown for the disputed order.

- Capture the live position. Note the contract, side and size before making any further change. If the order was meant to open a hedge or close an existing position, compare the new net position with the intended result.
- Open order history and trade history. Search around the UTC time of the cancel request. Filter by contract where the interface allows it, and distinguish the original order from later orders.
- Match the order ID. An order that looks similar by price or size is not enough. The identifier must match the cancellation request and the fill record.
- Add the fills. Sum the executed quantities for that order. For a partial fill, the sum may be smaller than the requested size even though the order is no longer resting.
- Compare timestamps in UTC. A displayed local time can make a fill appear to precede or follow a cancel incorrectly. Use the exchange’s recorded UTC times where available.
- Save evidence. Export or copy the order details, fills, position snapshot and any event messages before they age out of a short-lived view.
If the interface says the order was canceled but the fills total is nonzero, treat the nonzero quantity as executed. If the position and fills disagree, stop changing the account until you have checked for another order, a delayed position update or a display problem.
5. Programmatic checks for traders using the API
API procedures are for traders who already operate authenticated integrations. Never send API secrets, authentication headers or private keys to another person while requesting help.
REST order status
Use Kraken Futures’ specific-order status endpoint immediately after the event. It covers specified orders that are open or were filled or canceled in the previous five seconds. Query by the exact order ID, then save the response with its UTC retrieval time. Because the window is short, do not assume a later query can reconstruct the same result.

REST fills
Call the Futures fills endpoint and match the disputed order ID. Record every returned fill ID, symbol, side, size, price and fill time. The default response is the latest 100 fills when lastFillTime is omitted; use the endpoint’s documented pagination or time parameters to locate older executions. Respect Kraken’s REST request limits and avoid a tight retry loop while the account is in an uncertain state.
WebSocket order events
For a live WebSocket integration, retain both the order snapshot and every delta. Kraken identifies reasons including partial_fill, full_fill and cancelled_by_user. A cancel response should be evaluated together with subsequent order and fill events. In Kraken’s cancel-order documentation, if fewer updates arrive than requested and an error is returned, an order may not have been canceled.
FIX execution reports
FIX users should compare the execution sequence, order ID, execution ID, status, cumulative quantity, last quantity and UTC transaction time. Keep all reports, including restatements: Kraken documents that a trade reported late can produce a restated execution report.

Kraken’s Maker Protection article gives timing guidance for the held-order case. If nothing should remain resting and nothing new should trade, it says to wait out the protection window—described there as at most 100 ms—and then cancel. The correct interval is market-specific, so confirm makerProtectionMillis before using this procedure.
- Identify whether the contract has Maker Protection enabled.
- Determine whether the order could be held as an aggressive order and note the configured protection interval.
- Wait through that interval rather than sending repeated cancel or placement messages.
- Send one cancel request and inspect its per-order response.
- Reconcile the resulting order status and fills; do not infer the result from the cancel response alone.
This is operational guidance for the documented Maker Protection scenario, not a guarantee that every order will behave identically or that a cancel can prevent a trade already released to the market.
7. When the records conflict
Contact Kraken through the current authenticated support route when the position, order status and fills cannot be reconciled, or when an execution appears under an order ID you did not submit. Support cannot be expected to infer missing details from a screenshot alone, so provide a compact, chronological record.

- Order-status responses and the resulting position snapshot
- WebSocket deltas, FIX execution reports or other response/event payloads
- Screenshots showing the interface state, with UTC times if possible
Do not disclose API credentials. Kraken’s published material does not establish a guaranteed support response time or a guaranteed remedy, so keep the position-risk decision separate from the support investigation.

8. Common mistakes that make the incident worse
- Placing the order again: this can create a duplicate position while the first order is merely delayed in reporting.
- Assuming “canceled” means “never traded”: a held Maker Protection order is the documented exception.
- Relying only on open orders: open-order views omit completed executions.
- Checking only a position number: the position does not identify which order or fill produced it.

- Treating a dead-man’s switch as a reversal: Kraken’s dead-man’s-switch feature is a prospective network-failure safeguard, not a way to undo an execution that already occurred.
9. A concise decision path
- Position changed? Manage the live exposure and record it.
- Fill exists for the original order ID? Reconcile quantity, price and UTC time; consider that quantity executed.
- No fill found yet? Check the short order-status window, then the fills endpoint or history, and preserve all responses.
- Maker Protection enabled? Apply the held-order timing explanation only after verifying the contract’s setting.
- Records still conflict? Stop duplicate trading, preserve the evidence and contact Kraken through its current support channel.
